The Catacombs were created on 17th March 1998, and were opened on the web on 20th April 1998. On 8th August 1999, the Catacombs moved from the old Geocities site to Space1999.Net.
Some of the material that originally appeared on the site has been removed to create a book about the series, titled The Space: 1999 Companion. Additionally, an offline version of the Catacombs website has been prepared for CD-ROM. Both contain additional material not seen on the website. Carlton (now Granada) have granted Powys Media a license to publish the book and CD-ROM.
We recommend Internet Explorer 5, Mozilla/Firefox 1, Netscape 6, Opera 7, Safari 1 or later versions. Older browsers, including Netscape 4, may not render pages properly.
Javascript and style sheets are used extensively, but this is not a multimedia site and there are no sound or animations. Almost every page validates to the W3C HTML 4.01 Transitional standard and some pages use the XHTML 1.0 standard. CSS is used for all font styles, but table-based layouts are used for ease of design and to maintain support for Netscape 4 and other older browsers.
The image-popup effect is created using Highslide JS. Highslide is free for noncommercial sites, but requires a license for commercial sites.
There are about 3000 pages in this version of the site. There are over 30,000 pictures, but the site is designed so it can be viewed in text-only mode.
