Space:1999 the Needlework Universe

Parallel universes have been an honored Space:1999 tradition since Another Time, Another Place first aired, allowing fans the wonderful opportunity to explore different possible scenarios with their favorite characters.  In this ‘universe’ we have tried to treat the characters with the affection and respect due to longtime friends, and yet still have some fun placing them in new situations.

The first few scenes of Space Brain give interesting clues to leisure activities that remain on post-Breakaway Alpha.  Along with puzzles and Paul’s novel, Sandra is seen to be working on a painted needlepoint canvas.  While the content of that canvas is open to interpretation, it was simply too tantalizing a situation to go unnoticed by a pair of enthusiastic needleworkers and Space:1999 fans, one well-established in writing fanfic and the other new to the genre.  The recurrent themes of needlepoint, cross-stitching and quilting appear and reappear in subtle fashion throughout many of the stories in this collection.

Several presumptions have been made as points of origin for this ‘universe’: 


  • ~ The attraction Alan shows for Sandra in Full Circle, although unremarked upon in subsequent episodes, is real and finally able to flourish in the absence of Paul Morrow.
  • ~ While very little is known of Sandra’s past beyond her fiancé Peter Rockwell, such a quiet and reserved character could hold a wealth of history and yet only speak of it sparingly.  We do know she is partial to pilots (Peter Rockwell, Mike Ryan and Paul Morrow), so just perhaps the reason for this fascination will lead her to be interested in yet another pilot.   
  • ~ Paul’s absence is explained in the wonderful and haunting book The Forsaken by John Kenneth Muir and published by Powys Media.  Here, Alpha crosses paths with the planet Pyxidea whose inhabitants, the doomed Cryptdodira, are fated for extinction by the death of the Space Brain.  If you have not yet had the opportunity to read this book, let us encourage you to do so.  It is with kind permission we use these events as a launching point for this completely unofficial fanfiction spin on reality. Of note, several stories do address mature themes in the relationships of adult couples.
