Turquoise

-- Summer, 1973

Susan stepped out of the shower and grabbed a large plush towel sheet that completely enveloped her.  New towels.  Her mother was working hard to redeem herself.  They had spent yesterday shopping.  Anything Susan paused to look at, her mother bought.  The girls stayed home with their grandfather, something unusual since Susan hadn’t seen them in a month, but her mother was working hard to get back into Susan’s good graces.

She toweled her new short hair dry and examined herself in the mirror.  Her hair was still gold-blonde, although now much shorter than she was used to.  She had resisted her mother’s urging to have it frosted, which was becoming quite the rage.  She thought it made the women she’d seen with it look older.  Not that she would say that out loud to any of them.  She arranged her short hair with her fingers and pulled the new blow dryer out of the drawer.

When she brought the girls down at the end of June, just after scout camp, they had been excited by the prospect of staying with their grandparents by themselves.  Susan returned to Chicago to do a thorough house cleaning as well as help her sorority sisters organize a charity event.  She hadn’t realized that her mother and daughters would spend the summer remodeling the upstairs, including her old bedroom.

The girls had been given free range with the two adjoining bedrooms at the back of the house – one of which had been hers since the day she was born.  Missy had chosen a canopy bed with white lacy bed clothes and ruffles, matching curtains, a white French provincial dresser and chest of drawers and a wicker rocker and what-not shelf in the corner by the window.  Helena’s room, through the connecting bathroom, had been redone in darker colors, blues and greens, with plaid wool bedclothes on a cherry four-poster bed and furniture to match.  The walls were a dark green, cherry bookshelves held favorite books and toys.  An oversize easy chair big enough to hold both girls, and probably their grandfather too, sat near her dormer window.

Gone was her own lavender room with white trim, her small bed with its chenille bed spread, stuffed animals, comfy chair.  Her Breyer’s horses were all packed away in the attic, along with her horse show ribbons and awards.  She knew it was probably silly, she was a grown woman in her thirties with two children of her own but her mother had just packed up her childhood with out even asking her!  Whenever she was here with her husband she used the guest room, but when Robert stayed in Chicago and worked, she had always returned to her own bedroom and the twins had shared the adjoining room.

Was she jealous?  Maybe.  But she did know that this hurt, for one reason or another.  She had been unable to hide her anger from her mother, but most of her venting she had saved for Robert, calling him late at night while everyone was asleep.  He had listened patiently, even though she knew she sounded like a spoiled brat, and had sympathized with her.  It was at his suggestion that she went to the attic one night and found the box with her stuffed animals and brought her two favorites back downstairs to sleep with her. --  a dilapidated teddy bear with most of the fuzz worn off, and a zebra that had lost its button eyes in the far distant past.

They were now carefully tucked away because Robert would arrive today.  The girls’ birthday was Monday and Robert would be here to celebrate with them.  She put the dryer away and looked at herself in the mirror, considering what makeup to wear.  Her parents had taken the girls to the county fair for the day.  Good.  Robert never looked forward to seeing her parents and right now, she wanted Robert all to herself.  Now.  Not late tonight, but right now.  She had sold the twins on the fair with the promise of rides and cotton candy and hot dogs, and, she smiled deviously at the thought, fireworks.  That would keep them away until well after dark, which was quite late during these summer months.  Once the girls left with her parents she’d taken one of the horses out for a long energetic ride, despite the heat.  Then she returned to the house for her shower to get ready for Robert.  He should be here any time.

Makeup applied, she went to the bedroom, and began choosing jewelry.  A large silver band with one smooth turquoise stone, she clasped it around her wrist.  Small turquoise earrings, not dangling ones that might get in the way, they hugged her ear and looked good with the new short hairstyle.  The she opened the box on the dresser and lifted out the new necklace.

Why had she bought this?  Correction, why had she let her mother buy it?  It was beautiful, each piece of turquoise carefully cradled in its own silver setting.  All the stones interlocked to a breathtaking pattern that would lay flat and fan out from neck to breast.  She had seen it in the jewelry store window and admired its smooth lines, the brilliant color of the stones, the silverwork that was so exquisite but still seemed to draw the eye to the stones, not the intricate patterns on the silver itself.  Her mother noticed her interest and named several different outfits it could be worn with.  Not in Chicago, of course.  This piece needed to be worn in Texas or the Southwest.  She couldn’t imagine any occasion in Chicago where this would be the proper accessory no matter what else she was wearing.

Perhaps that was when this fantasy of hers had begun.  Nothing would match this in Chicago.  She held the necklace up to her bare skin, then fastened it in place and admired the effect.  Yes, alone with Robert, nothing would match this just fine.  She had allowed her mother to buy the necklace.  Mother hated Robert, even after all these years, and never hesitated to let Susan know it.  Susan was mad enough at her mother that she let her spend an enormous sum on something that Susan would rarely use except to undress for Robert.

Movement out the window caught her eye.  The pickup truck that Susan had left at the airport yesterday was winding up the long drive from the highway.  She smiled and reached for the perfume that she knew drove him mad.  This was exactly what she had planned.

The pickup had been parked right where Susan said it would be, keys under the driver’s seat in the unlocked cab.  In Chicago, it would have vanished in a heartbeat.  But Texas was different, so different.  The flight down had been smooth and fast.  They’d arrived a little earlier than scheduled.  The stewardess had been attentive, as usual.  First Class was usually filled with the elderly and overweight businessmen.  Robert’s tall lean form attracted notice and his drinks had arrived promptly with just the right amount of flirtation on the part of the pretty blonde charged with the care and feeding of First Class.  She was like the appetizer, priming him for the main course.  And he was primed.  Susan had assured him they would have the house to themselves when he arrived.  That alone made him push the pickup, only a year old, for all the speed its 8 cylinders were capable of.

Robert caught a glimpse of the house as he came around a curve and wondered if Susan were watching from the window.  And what did she have planned?  Susan was his little general.  He knew she had something in mind last night when she called, telling him where she parked the truck and letting him know they would be alone.  There was more, and Susan could be very creative.  He loved it when she was creative.  That phone call had been the real appetizer, Susan whispering in his ear how much she wanted to have him here.  Flirting with the willing young stewardess had been just priming the pump.  And thinking about what Susan had planned was making him pretty well primed, he noticed, shifting in his seat and looking down at his equipment, ready and raring to go. But he had made a pact with Jack before they left.  He had a little plan to get her back for leaving him all high and dry over the phone.

He brought the truck up to the side of the house choosing to park in the spot normally used by his father in law.  Robert chuckled.  That would get the old man going.  Robert eyed the house carefully.

“Just what do you have planned?”  He said to himself   He looked down at Jack and said “Easy Boy.   Remember our deal – We are men.  We stick together.  We aren’t going to jump through her hoops without a little payback for that phone call.  Robert willed Jack back into a flaccid state with a few images of Lisa and Randy.  Then he grabbed his bag and headed to the front door.

Susan carefully perched herself on the landing of the stairs. She tried a few poses  trying to find the one that would drive Robert so crazy that he’d scoop her up and carry her upstairs although Robert seeing her standing in any pose wearing only her jewelry would probably do the trick. . She stood with one hand loosely holding the banister  the other at her side and waited for the door to open.

Robert pushed against the door and it opened with ease.  He placed his bag by the door  and looked around.  There she was...on the stairs…standing completely nude…God she was hot. So hot that when she purred his name “Robbie”  he thought his eyes were going to roll back into this head.   Jack was equally impressed and began to pulse inside Robert’s pants.  As she took a few steps toward him, Robert looked around making sure they were alone and trying to find a place to take her. He looked to the left then the right and back to the left.  Then he saw it, the telephone in the study. Aw …hit the brakes…yes…his plan…get a grip old boy he said to himself willing Jack back down.

“Hi Sweetie”  He said as he started up the stair giving her a chaste kiss on the cheeks.   "I noticed the fence by the road needs fixing.  Think I’ll go up and change into some work cloths and run down and fix it before some of those cows get out."  He was a few steps above her when he turned around to see the expression on her face.  “Hey…did you cut your hair?”  She shook her head slowly wondering if this man was her actual husband..  “Looks nice.”  He said as he continued up the stairs.

“Are we in the guest room?” He said when he reached the top. He turned and looked at her.  Her seductive smile was gone as was her pose.  She was standing glaring at him with her arms folded over her ample chest.   He winked at her.  “I really like the hair.”  Then he continued on into their bedroom.

He tossed his bag onto the foot of the bed and headed into the closet.  He heard the stomp of her high heels as she ascended the stairs behind him.  Robert chuckled.  She was PISSED.  He grabbed a pair of old jeans and a denim shirt entering the bedroom at the same time she did.

“Hey babe…where’s Maria and Maggie?  I’m hungry.”  Robert could have sworn that he saw steam coming from her ears when she turned her death glare toward him.

“Robert”  She said as if she were scolding one of the children.  “Is that all you can think about…YOUR STOMACH?  I’ve been gone a whole week and you are worried about THE FENCE and YOUR STOMACH!”  She slammed her high-heel into the wood flooring.

She looked so cute standing there all mad and completely naked that Robert almost changed his mind about paying her back.

“Susie baby…it was a long flight and you know how I hate airplane food.”  He moved toward her  “Hey…are those new earrings? “  He touched her ears softly.  “I don’t really like ‘em.  You can’t wear ‘em at home. Why you buy ‘em?”   He started toward the bathroom slapping her on the butt as he pasted.

Susan stood in a huff.  She had gone through a lot of trouble to get everyone out of the house and now he was being such a  such a ..JACKASS that she decided he didn’t deserve to get laid.  “UGH!!!”  she said as she moved to get her robe.

In the bathroom,  Robert realized he’d pushed her just as far as he could.  He looked around the corner to see her reach for the robe.  “Hey baby…”  he said  “There’s something I forgot to tell you?”

“What now?”  She asked indignantly -robe in hand

Robert smiled and moved toward her. He took the robe from her hands and tossed it across the room.  “You are the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen and if I don’t have you right now I’m going to bust something.”  He said as he picked her up and carried her not toward her bed but down stairs. Susan squealed.  “Robert!  What are you doing? Put me down!”.

“No way baby” Robert laughed deeply. “There’s a place in this house we haven’t done it and today’s the day we do there!”.

Susan looked at him as if he’d gone mad. “Where?”

Robert held her tight a he carried downstairs stopping in front of the door to the master bedroom.

He gave her a wink. “They may hate me all the time but I can have their little girl almost anytime I want and they can’t do a damn thing about it.”   Robert kicked open the door to Lisa and Randolph’s bedroom.  He eyed the large four-poster bed covered in what he was sure the most expensive duvet Lisa could find.  That would do just fine. “And today,  I want her right in the middle of …”

“Not the bed”.  Susan said as he took a step toward it. “It’s too creepy for me.”

“Where then?”

Susan scanned the room quickly.  “Over there on the sofa.”

Robert put her down and she took his hand leading him over to the vanilla colored sofa beneath the window.   She looked around the room filled with her parents belonging.  She wasn’t sure she could do it here but she would let him have his little revenge. But she was on to his game now. She turned and looked at him all smug and macho.

“Sit”.  She ordered.  The tone she used made Robert think he’d pushed her too far until. Susan reached forward and started removing his clothes. “You are in so much trouble. Mister!”

“I am?” Robert watched the buttons of his dress shirt fly across the room. Hands roaming up her body as she stood close to him.

“Going to fix the fence …my ass.”  She said as she pulled his belt from the loops.

Robert chucked…”You didn’t call me back the other night. It’s not nice to leave a man  like that.”

“Bastard!”  She said and backed up.  “Take off your pants.”

Robert stood and dropped his pants.  Jack jumped out as soon as he was free.

Susan pushed him back down on the couch

“I shouldn’t give you any”. She said standing above him tapping her foot.

Robert smiled and pulled her closer.  “Under other circumstances you wouldn’t…but today you are just as ready as I am and there’s no denying it is there?” He slipped a finger through her moist folds. “God,  you’re wet!”  He leaned back on the couch.  “Well woman, here I am…all hard and waitin’ on you.  What are you waitin’ for an engraved invitation?”

Susan stepped back and eyed him carefully as if deciding to actually give him what he wanted or deny him the pleasure for being such a jackass.  He sat there grinning hands stretched out over the back of the sofa, hair slightly out of place and Jack standing at attention eyeing her.

“I’m not giving you a blow job.”  She said as she stepped closer.  “You were a bad boy and you messed up my plans.”  She straddled him letting him enter her slowly.  She smiled with satisfaction as Robert’s eyes rolled back in his head.

“I was a bad boy. Miss Susan.”  Robert groaned.  “Do your worst.”

Susan began moving quickly moaning his name.

God, she’s too good at this” Robert thought.  She’s got to slow down or I’m not going to last.  “Susie. Stop honey. too fast”

Susan stopped and smiled down at him.  “What’s wrong, dear?  Getting a little ahead of the class are we?”

Robert slapped her on the rear.  “If you don’t slow down…you won’t get yours.”

Susan leaned forward and whispered in his ear.  “Look over there.”  She pointed to a picture on the dresser.  It was a picture of  Lisa and Randolph.  She followed Robert’s gaze.  “Concentrate on that.”  She started moving again bouncing up and down faster than before.

Robert kept his eye on the picture but after awhile even that wasn’t slowing down the train that was his orgasm.  Then she started moaning his name and Robert was almost done.  “Hurry babe:.  He managed to choke out.

“I’m there”  She said as her muscles clamped around him.  “Let go”.  And with that he did, emptying into her with a loud groan.

They sat on the sofa leaning against one another trying to catch their breath.

“Damn.!  You’re going to kill me one day, Woman!”  Robert said heavily.

Susan rose and headed into her parent’s bathroom returning with a towel to clean them up. Smiling when she tossed the towel in his direction.  “Bastard!”

Robert’s deep laughed filled the room.  “Come over here you little minx.”  He pulled her back across his lap.  “Let me get a good look at this new hair”.  He fingered her blonde locks gingerly..  “You didn’t tell me you cut it.”

“Well,  I wanted it to be a surprise”.  She ran her hand over golden hair on his chest  “Do you hate it?”

“No.  I love it.  And I have a little confession to make too.”  He looked at her sheepishly.

“What is it?” She asked.

He smiled.  “I really like those earrings too…sexy.”

Susan reached behind her and picked up one of the throw pillows whacking Robert on the shoulder.   Robert laughing grabbed the pillow from her.  “Gotcha ya!”

“Jackass!”  Susan  spat.

“Oh and the necklace…it’s my favorite.  Really shows off your neckline…and you know how much I like your neckline”  He whispered as he placed his lips on her neck and began moving down. “Because your neck leads down to some of your best assets”  He said kissing the top of both of her breasts. Her sharp intake of breath told him what he needed to know. Susan was still primed and ready for another round.

“Robbie…” She whispered…

“Hmm…”

“Can we find another room?’

Robert stopped kissing her and looked around pictures of Lisa and Randolph were everywhere and the eyes in the picture were all looking at him with a hard and disgusted glare. It was downright creepy.

“Let’s head back to our room.”  He suggested.  Susan rose from his lap rearranging the sofa back to it’s normal appearance as Robert gathered his clothes.

When they arrived back in their bedroom, Susan removed the duvet and crawled into bed as Robert closed and locked the door.

Robert looked around.  “Stuffed animals?”

“All put away.  I don’t need them when I’ve got you.  You know you don’t have to lock the door.”

“I’m not taking any chances.”  He moved into her arms.  He placed a kiss just below the large stone on her collarbone and moved along the necklace, placing a kiss below each stone.  He pushed up to look down at her.  “You know, there’s not much you can wear this necklace with at home.”

“Correction,” she said, running her finger across his lips.  “It goes very well with nothing.”

He couldn’t argue with that, and didn’t try.
