Bryan - Thanks for an honest and thoughtful response to my original topic post. I appreciate you took the time to answer my honest question sincerely, without going ballistic, as you obviously noticed most posters on the thread did.

I sometimes post to a Trek BB (TrekBBS.com), and while there are a handful of homophobes there, the mere mention of homosexuality and Star Trek is something about 90% of the members of that board are able to discuss in a mature fashion. It seems that while this thread was still on the general Space: 1999.net forum, the percentage was the opposite. sad.gif

Anyway, I agree that what Space: 1999 had to offer, especially in its first season, can hit a viewer on a level that's hard to explain. There's certainly an existential substantiveness to the series that's like no other SF-based series on the air.

Hummmmmm

The points of Obsolite look good to me. Since I noticed the existence of a gaybase, I've been looking differently to the episodes. I happened to notice here and there some troubling piece of fabric on male bodies and I suppose if I was gay, I'm not, hummmmmm the guy in Troubled Spirit, at a point of the story, the way he is presenting himself..... hoooo

I don't think speaking about sex should be banned.
Tell me gba if this is a silly prejudicial thinking :
most people avoid speaking about sex because of the presence of children around
gay people have statistically less children than others (by instance : married heteros)
therefore gay people are more free to speak about sex.

I'm not sure I got all the points of all the posts above this
but I wonder why political issues could not been discussed on a gay place ? I mean, I'm very confidently thinking that gay people are politically mature and able to talk about Iraqis, for instance, or diving moon.

Maybe there could be a gay attraction for space since it is quite a non-children place. A lot a gays, I think, are worried they cannot have children as others. Then it is reassuring to share the feeling of a place, Alpha, without pressure to make babies. I may be silly wrong, but I have this thinking that real gay people must face the fact that the family line stops where they are concerned and this must hurt them. Alpha is a sort of a huge "stopped family line". I know that it is why I used to love space. It was a harbour for the fragile teenage mind I had waiting to be more mature one day. (Am I tongue.gif biggrin.gif dry.gif sad.gif blink.gif ?) So maybe yes, another gay icon in the pantheon.

Opps - looks like I made a mistake in joining this forum actually - and I was all excited to find it too. Very dissapointed! I am sure there are gay and straight and black and white and yellow and pink people, and all types of alien beings who all enjoy Space 1999.

It's always been my attitude that everyone on the Internet is sexless on a forum and may comment upon what they like to comment upon.

We all have to get along. Helena would despise this.

In answer to the question - I think that the stylised, well designed, well plotted, incredibly well written and costumed series of 1999 is what appealed to everyone. Hetro and Homo alike. I don't see any phalic likeness in the Eagles. I don't see anything inadvertantly gay about Space 1999 - no more than Star Trek which was a lot more camp. Ironically enough, it is more than likely that the sets, costumes etc were designed by gay men as is often the case. A factor always overlooked or down played.

That said - I don't think such rampent homophobia should be allowed in a forum where a specific section of this forum is set aside for the gay fans. Helena would never have allowed it. She would have stared at you through her Max Factored eyelashes for a long period of time and then turned, slowly, woodenly and demurely, away for good.

My 2 cents worth. Joel.

Can we assume that most Alphans are bi-sexual? Maybe Helena walked in on John and Victor...?

Hmmm...Now there is a graphic (and unwelcome) image.

No, I can't imagine that but I can imagine Mayer as being bi-sexual. I mean LITERALLY bisexual, turning into a man/ woman/ beast at will.

I'm sure Fred would have wanted that in a "reimagined" version of S99, Y2 style. tongue.gif

What about Victor and Simmonds somewhere inbetween Breakaway & Earth bound...?

Sandra and Yasko?
