No worries, it's already been done! Check the following link http://www.space1999.net/~moonbase99/mp3aa.htm You'll find MP3's of ALL the Peter Pan audio adventures there. See? The web truly is all things to all people. . . . |

So the Peter Pan records are the first sets of audio books for Space 1999? Should be easy enough to improve on that don't you think?
Maybe those were the scripts that were made available to Peter Pan records? I have a wonderful issue of COMIC BOOK ARTIST that talks about the 1970's Charlton Comics (Space 1999 books included) that I've been typing up for the Catacombs, (Someday I'll finish this....it's 3/4 done!) with information on how the writers and artists for the comics first got to see the show. Great stuff. Gray Morrow, one of the artists for the book, also the artist whose work is on the J2 Laserdiscs died and they did a whole tribute issue to him. I know Space 1999 was a little "blip" in their professional lives but it is interesting to read how they approached the subject matter and dealt with the license. I have high hopes that any audio book coming from POWYS will surpass that old audio adventures. Getting back to the choice of scripts, all along Gerry Anderson's productions had tremendous licensing tie-ins for children. But a lot of the Space 1999 items (Most of which were producted during the darker Year One i think) are for young children! Funny when you think about all those "scary" episodes! I use the music for Force of Life in some of my High School music classes and the scenes still scare the crap out of my students! ![]() And I only use the Anton possesion scene, not the extra crispy scenes or the murder scenes! I guess maybe Space has warped all our childhoods??? Can you imagine being 8 years old, sitting in front of the TV with your brand new Mattel Eagle (Thanks Mom & Dad!), your little Bergman, Koenig and Helena dolls along with your Stun Gun water pistol and End of Eternity comes on?! Or Missing Link? |

Yes, I can, because that's EXACTLY what I did!!! I have especially vivid memories of watching "Force of Life" and "Missing Link" when I was 8 or 9 years old. Changed my whole damn life, that show did. I was reading H.P. Lovecraft and thinking nothing of it by age 10, and I think Space: 1999 had a helluva lot to do with my ability to handle and appreciate such themes at an early age. I'm fascinated by the whole controversy regarding the current Ang Lee film of "Hulk." I've been reading the talkbacks on aintitcoolnews.com (and feeling my brain cells get sucked out of my head thru reverse osmosis). There's a definite schism in the ability of people to appreciate the film for the flawed work of art it is. People who appear to be in or past their mid-30's are digging it, while younger people, brought up on post-Star Wars "bang zoom zap" are whining about the film being too boring, with uninvolving actors, a bad script and not enough action. Does that remind anyone of criticisms towards the first year of a certain mid-70's SF TV show? |

Update at the Catacombs about the Powys books, with a really nice surprise regarding the audiobook at the end. http://www.space1999.net/~catacombs/main/m...2002.html#Powys But for those too lazy to hit the link, here's the relevant text: A series of new original novels. In series chronology they are year 1 (Resurrection), transitional Year 1/2 (Forsaken, Survival), and post Year 2. Syukht? features the alternative Alphans from Another Time, Another Place. Eternity Unbound comprises Eternity Unleashed (Balor's rise and fall), End of Eternity (a new and expanded novelisation), and Resurrection (a new and expanded version). There will also be two limited edition hardcover omnibus editions of the year 1 and year 2 novelisations, each revised and expanded by the original authors (Tubb, Rankine, Ball, Butterworth) with new forewords. The Year 2 volume will be published first, due late 2003. An audio book version of Resurrection is being recorded by Barry Morse in summer 2003. Website Title Cover 1 "Resurrection" by William Latham introduction by Johnny Byrne May 2002; $15 Resurrection was reviewed by Don D'Ammassa in Chronicle magazine, #229 October 2002, p41 2 "The Forsaken" by John Kenneth Muir foreword by Prentis Hancock published with 2 different covers January 2003; $15 3 "Survival" by Brian Ball foreword by Barry Morse "Omega" by William Latham "Syukht?" by Vicente Gallegos-Aguazul Eternity Unbound by William Latham Untitled by various authors (anthology of short fiction) 2003? I didn't realize a title had been picked for the upcoming Balor book! When I saw Bill at ICON last March he was at work on it but I don't remember if he had a title yet. I wonder if Eternity Unbound is a nod to Brian Aldiss Frankenstein Unbound since Bill wrote the New Jersey based sequel to Frankenstein, Mary's Monster? Parts of Mary's Monster (Pardon the pun!) were quite good and you can connect Bill's style with the later work in Ressurection. Looking forward to seeing more of it in the Prequel/Update/Sequel Eternity Unbound!
Yeah, this really works for me too! Since he'll be doing the recording of it over the summer I wonder if he'll let us know his thoughts on the book during the Portland convention? Since he has a pretty sober take on the series will he feel the same about the book? Looking forward to finding out! |

In many cases, the books printed after the serie, are...how can I say...are reason of disappoint for the people that read them. One example is: the Star Wars books...by my opinion, terrific!!! Bye, Dada Baggins |

. Have you actually listened to any of them? They've been turned into farces!? 'Dragon's Domain' is hilarious! As the monster engulfs his crew, the audio Cellini is obliged to give us a running commentary on its appearance! And as for the 'punchline' of 'End Of Eternity' - please tell me that wasn't part of the original script! |

Oh, yeah. They're pretty painful. But still . . . who on earth would greenlight "End of Eternity" for a children's read-along comic? And the fifth audio adventure, "Return to the Beginning," is a complete howler. An Eagle, with Carter, Helena, Prof. Bergman and Koenig on board, gets thrown back to biblical times. Bergman . . . good old Victor, smartest man on the Moon . . . says something like, "John, we've been thrown back 4000 years! We're at the DAWN OF TIME!" |

I just got off the phone with Mateo Latosa, Space 1999 fan and publisher of POWYS Books. I had the great pleasure to hear over the phone Barry Morse reading the first POWYS book, Resurrection! Sounded great! It's Barry Morse reading not Barry Morse trying to sound like the characters in the book or trying to sound like Victor from the 1970's. I heard a good chunk of it and I love it. Hopefully the CD's will be out sometime early next year. The third book, Survival is coming along, Mateo has gone back to college to do some post graduate work, plus he has a day job as well so that's the mystery behind the Survival delay. Also in the works is the Space 1999 companion, the anthology and the Robert Scheckly limited edition. I thought this would be an interesting post in the Forum...even though I put it out on two other email lists. Sorry for the duplication! I also decided to put it in this thread instead of making a new thread. To: Space 1999 Email List Subject: The Black Sun in Snowcrash Bcc: Space 1999 GBA Email List Started listening to Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson today and trying to decide if I like it, if it's a good book or if it's a brilliant book. (I think I've already decided it's a good book FYI) If already listened to Stephenson's The Diamond Age which I decided was completely brilliant and wonderful (But had a slightly unsatisfactory ending). So (And please forgive me if this has already been posted) imagine my surprise early on in Snow Crash when main character/Pizza Delivery guy Hiro is in the cyberspace like world of the Metaverse (Complete with Avatars) and goes into an establishment called The Black Sun! Here are a couple of quotes from the book describing the Black Sun in the Metaverse (Yeah, I know Meta)
There is more but who needs tons of quotes from a book in an email! Our episode Black Sun was written by David Weir and the owner of the bar called Black Sun in the Metaverse of the book Snowcrash is Da5id Meier. http://www.space1999.net/~catacombs/main/e...uide/t03bs.html http://www.space1999.net/~catacombs/main/p...guide/xebs.html http://www.space1999.net/~moonbase99/blacksun.htm http://www.space1999.net/~chronicle/ExE/Year1/bs.html The interesting thing I noticed when listening to the book this morning is that the bar isn't The Black Hole OR Black Hole Sun (Like the song) and it grabbed my attention. Also the name Da5id as I remembered David Weir's name as scriptwriter as I listened. Probably reading....or listening too much Space 1999 into the book but it was fun to make the connections and run with them. Any thoughts? |
