Oh...but I do believe I like the UK and Australian DVDs, both inside and out better than the US ones.. Heh...Nice picture of the week too.. |

The one really cool thing about the US discs was their Bonus Disc. But it's the most crappy packaging (there isn't any). The Italian discs have the best menus (kudos to Space1999.net's own Roberto) The Australian DVDs have the edge in price- GBP42 for 48 episodes! |

Okay, I'm assuming you have all the various sets Martin so when the times comes to curl up by the fireplace with your hot cocoa (Oh yeah, you're in England) Curl up with your tea which edition are you likely to watch? ![]() Or are you still using your Columbia House VHS tapes? Or maybe the Sybil Danning Adventure version? It's this line that gets you isn't it? Until our next star date, save your atomic energy. Because you and I are the perfect team to teach the whole Universe the real meaning of the Big Bang theory. Do you want my old WPIX tapes I made in the 1980s when the prints had turned green for the first 20 minutes of the episode? Are you still watching the show after all these years? I usually use my A&E version, I have the UK editions and the TF1 but don't play them much (My region free machine is downstairs) and I have an old laserdisc in my bookroom so I've been watching them mostly on Laser myself as I like to put on an episode to play while I work on that room. Last weeks selections were The Last Enemy, The Seed of Destruction Voyager's Return and Brian the Brain. The Laserdiscs and the UK DVD's are great for getting autographs on, the jackets on the UK disc cases are really cool. The packaging on the TF1 release is terrific but I wish they had used more pictures from the series inside the booklets instead of pictures of the planets and sun. |

I use the UK discs, both for viewing and for screen captures. Perhaps because they are PAL (more lines per picture), they are almost always better for captures than A&E. Only a few of the remastered year 2 episodes are noticeably better. It is fun to watch the foreign language versions though. (Black Sun in Italian at the weekend) But how can I resist Sybil?
Oh, and Ring Around The Moon is improved immensely with a mug of horlicks Martin |

When my SAMPO machine converts a PAL disc there is a little distortion on the screen from the conversion I guess. But the SAMPO is a cheap machine, if I wanted to sink a few more dollars into it I guess I could do better for PAL to NTSC conversion. So for serious viewing (Not playing an episode in the background) I'd use the A&E because they work the best here.
Martin, I have such a great picture of Sybil at the recent Chiller theater show in New Jersey signing one of those videos. You have to see it! You'll love it! It's just so outrageous to see her signing that tape and she was thrilled to see it!
I must be losing my mind but lately Matter of Life and Death has become close to number one on my Space 1999 hit parade. I don't know what it is, it's not the story that's for sure! It's probably Barbara Bain! She hypnotises me in that episode! I think she's sending me subliminal messages with her eyelids or something like that! ![]() ![]() For some reason I just love her in that episode but except for going off my meds I can't figure out the reason why! |

O Captain my captain, I do also think that sometimes some close up on Barbara are so beautiful ! I unfortunately have not made a memory stop on them in order to locate them, but you know what I'm talking about. That desperate beauty must be for a lot for loving the serie. I'm surprised you know the TF1 version. It is the only one I know. Could you please tell me if you think the image and cut and the rest are ok in comparison with the others ? I'm happy with it, maybe because I don't know any better. What annoys me, is the necessity of always having to go to the choice of language section for dodging the french version. In the french version, Verdishi don't call Carter "stupid kangooroo" (Seed of destruction). Nobody would even know of Carter being an Aussie. |

The French, Italian and spanish versions are all identical to the UK version. There are flaws- some of the episodes are a little dark, some (Devil's Planet) a little fuzzy. And Dragon's Domain has the well-known orange-tinted yellows. But mostly the picture and sound are great, and none of the flaws are really obvious. Even the extras are the same, although the TF1 and Pulp releases have some nice new things (Message From Moonbase Alpha best of all). Can you do an Australian accent in French? The US versions of both year 1 and 2 are slightly different- some year 1 episodes are noticably poorer, but some of the year 2 episodes are clearer and brighter. With the exception of the bonus disc (which is wonderful), the extras are a little thin, especially in the year 1 releases. The next thing I will do is update the comparison page in the Catacombs, but I haven't had time yet- I may have to skip this weekend's update. Barbara certainly has an electrifying image! [ ![]() |

Thank you Martin. For the australian accent, of course it would be challenging. What I mean is in the original version you've got a bunch of different accents, just think of Sandra ! In french, they are all flat middle of the way, slightly canadian, as they did the job there. The absence of colored accents is, imho, one of the hidden reasons of the decline of french cinema. |

Testament of Arkadia is a bit dark and fuzzy and Dragon's Domain has the funky colors. (Of course, they look much better on the Bonus disk). Ring Around The Moon is really poor quality, probably the worst. It looks like it was shot on my grandmother's home movie camera.... or was the episode really shot with poor quality film? (HEH..one could argue that RATM was not worth the cost of doing a quality job in filming, but let's not go there. I don't notice the Y2 episodes being that much clearer and brighter; then again, I don't watch a lot of Y2. However, the extras on the Y2 set were nice. On the Y1 set, they were disappointing. It would also have been nice to have more "still" pictures (publicity photos, more behind the scenes, etc) and "cut " and edited scenes. Some "bloopers" would have been neat too. I wonder if any of these extras are even available. Overall, I am just glad and delighted to have them on DVD so I can view them any time, commercial free and uncut! |

OMG. Yes, I think you are. MOLAD? Have you been hanging out with Petter? Next thing you know, you'll be saying RATM was the greatest S99 episode ever made. I get into these weird frame of minds too occasionally, where I watch a Y2 epsiode and believe there is something potentially wonderful about it. Naturally, I'm wrong. |

Interesting picture on the What's New page this week. I have seen the pose with the main cast on the operations level but I've never seen the "added" part of the background Main Mission extras on the balcony above. I wonder if it was ever intended to eventually give the ones on the balcony more significant parts and that's why they were included? (I know Suzanne Roquette as Tanya was given lines and I remember seeing Andy Dempsey almost every episode in a non speaking role but I don't remember seeing all the others every week.) Neat picture, nevertheless. |
