CAPTAIN SCARLET ON CiTV!
Hi, and welcome to the first Spectratech Mail from CaptainScarlet.com!

On 27th January 2005 British broadcaster ITV announced that they would be the first channel worldwide to air Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet!

The show will be shown on the children's show Ministry of Mayhem on Saturday mornings at 9.30. The first show will go out on air on 12th February, so be sure to set your alarm clocks!

Here is the official Press Release:

PRESS RELEASE
THUNDERBIRDS CREATOR GERRY ANDERSON BRINGS HIGH-OCTANE ACTION TO SATURDAY MORNINGS ON CiTV IN HIS ALL NEW CGI ANIMATION OF CAPTAIN SCARLET
Gerry Anderson's classic cult character Captain Scarlet is back on our screens in the most impressive animated series to hit kids' TV this century. The breath-taking scenes, mind-blowing action and dramatic storylines in each 22-minute episode of Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet pack all the punch of a blockbuster movie. With production costs of $30 million across 26 episodes and produced in High Definition with Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, the New Captain Scarlet will bring the cinema experience directly into the home.

Gerry Anderson says, "The New Captain Scarlet is the most advanced and adventurous production I have ever made, taking family sci-fi action adventure to another level and CGI television animation into a new dimension."

Based on the original 1960s series, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Gerry Anderson has cut loose his strings and opted for the latest motion capture system and cutting edge CGI to create this breakthrough TV series for ITV. The puppets have become actors on a futuristic set full of edge-of-the-seat excitement.

Twenty years after man's first steps on Mars, Captain Scarlet and Captain Black, agents of the elite security force, Spectrum, are sent there to investigate alien signals. After coming face to face with the evil Mysterons, both men are destroyed and the Mysterons declare war on planet Earth. Meanwhile the Mysterons attempt to rebuild Captain Scarlet in order to use him as a weapon of destruction against Earth. He manages to escape their control and return to Spectrum, but their genetic mutation of his body leaves him virtually indestructible. Not to be deterred, the Mysterons instead rebuild Captain Black who becomes their primary instrument of destruction.

Stationed on Skybase, it's up to Spectrum to protect Earth from the Mysterons' destruction. Colonel White and his right-hand woman Lieutenant Green head up the operation from Skybase, while Captain Scarlet and his sidekick Captain Blue handle ground patrol. Air defence comes from an all-female squadron of fighter pilots, the Angels, led by the tough and feisty Destiny Angel.

The New Captain Scarlet is produced by Gerry Anderson and boasts an impressive production team including director David Lane, and Conceptual Artist and Director Dominic Lavery who worked on the James Bond movies.

The world premiere of Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet will be on CiTV's MOM on Saturday 12th February- Vanessa Hill, Series Editor of MOM says:

"We're all extremely pleased to have Captain Scarlet on MOM; it's a fantastic animation. Viewers expect high quality programmes and this certainly fits the bill. We hope that viewers of MOM enjoy the series as much as the presenters and production team have".
Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet is the ultimate adventure in Outer Space. Exciting, atmospheric and full of dramatic tension it's definitely worth getting out of bed for!

So for those of you in the UK, boy your lucky! Wonder when it will be released here in Canada or the US.

Just watched the first Capt Scarlet. It's pretty much non-stop action. Well, it would have been if they didn't put 15 minutes of the kids quiz nonsense in the middle. I hate Saturday morning TV.

The story was much the same as the original, although Mysteron Scarlet's plot and demise wasn't as impressive (falling off a skyscraper probably isn't acceptible now, he just gets shot by Blue and falls off a gantry, and I'm not quite sure what he was doing with those levers anyway). The Spectrum parachute when he jumps out of Cloudbase was a nice touch.

Some of the visuals are quite good, and others are typical TV quality cgi. Faces and some body movements were often very stiff and artificial, especially in contrast to the motion capture running. The farmer, seen very briefly, looked pretty bad, and the guy in the car with the rigid collar that didn't move when he turned his head just looked weird. Okay, the originals were puppets and had no expressions or range of motion, but the mixture of realistic and fake motions and textures seems more disconcerting here.

The Martian landscape was nice, but the farm-land landscape was very bland in some shots. The Angel airplanes looked really good (the Grand Canyon landscape below them was less so).

Yes, they do the Matrix bullet-time slow-motion during action sequences, although not as much as the trailer.

I like the way the original looks, because of the Keith Wilson touch but I could never really get into the stories.

That said it sounds interesting, from your description could they have used more time working on this since it wasn't supposed to debut until the fall I think or did it look finished? (Meaning, is this what they wanted or were they rushed to get this on the air?)

Also how was the soundtrack? Did they take the same approach as Gray did in the 1960's, writing for adults or was it more for kids. Or did it fall for that bland Star Trek Voyager muzaktrack sound?

I'd be interested in getting it on DVD so I won't have to deal with whatever dumb time slot it gets in the US. Any news on a Region 1 release or should I plan on the R2 in October (I can wait until October)?

It was finished, but the pace was very fast, practically non-stop action. Bits of exposition, such as the Doctor who announces Scarlet is indestructible, or Destiny laying a flower on Black's coffin, were few and far between. It needed a little bit more plot.

None of the jokiness of Terrahawks or Space Precinct (or year 2...) thank god. The kiddy show around it (and stuck in the middle) were the most annoying parts. Really annoying.

Unfortunately I've completely forgotten what the soundtrack was like. Which probably isn't a good sign. dry.gif It does have a version of Barry Gray's dum-dum-dum percussion at fade outs.

It actually started around 11am (the mute button on the remote control and a Saturday newspaper is necessary while waiting). There was an ad break, but no quiz in the middle.
There was a banner displayed at the bottom of the screen for several minutes, obscuring the action (which included Black letting loose a mechanical spider on the floor, when you needed to see the bottom of the screen...).

You have no hope of setting a video to record this. mad.gif

The episode itself was okay. Lots of action like last time- effectively three episodes in one- attempted assassination of Col White, Russian planes attacking cloudbase, then trying to blow up the Earth. The pace is so fast, it feels like you're watching a trailer, not the real thing.

Lots more vehicles this time. Some nice designs, including a transport plane like one seen in Doppelganger. One of those unnatural things that leaps out at you is every road and ground surface is perfectly flat, and vehicles seem to glide rather than drive on wheels.

Well, very interesting first episode I must say. I really enjoyed watching it, different but enjoyable.
The part with Scarlet playing with the levers looks like he was trying to unstabilizing the engines on Cloudbase (Skybase) thus I guess having the base drop from the sky. Scarlet when he fell of the gantry fell through some kind of plasma/ion rays so I'm guessing thats where the combinations of the rays and being under the Mysteron control get fused together and make him indestructible.

Yes, the Spectrum parachute is a nice touch. The farmer, well not great. It's like I've seen that kind of CGI before on a character but I cannot place it. The vehicles are super, the Angel Interceptors (Falcon's) are sleek, Scarlet's car (The Cheetah), is more of a racing car than the original SPC was. Blue's flying bike (The Raid Bike) is neat, bulky but neat.

I'm looking forward to seeing the second episode of the two parter when the download completes. The internet, gotta love it! user posted image

Sounds cool enough, at least it's been made.... one thing though, it ain't going to be Gerry Anderson himself doing it unless he's been mysteronised.

Yes, it is Gerry producing

But if he has been mysteronised, is he Capt Scarlet or Capt Black?

I missed the last few episodes, but I saw Mercury Falling today.

Good story, fast paced but not rushed (it didn't feel like a trailer of highlights). Good setpieces (a Fireball XL5 space shuttle launch, car chases and a spaceship re-entry).

On the negative side... The CGI is still variable, with the character stuff being less successful. There's one very poor scene of Scarlet running across a carpark to a helicopter, and the car chases still have a strange gliding motion (but the drivers show realistic jerkiness). Scarlet's acrobatics as he jumps down from the radio telescope was a bad idea. But a strong story made the flaws less obvious.
