Welcome to the forum!!! I believe you are thinking of Destination- Moonbase Alpha. I've never seen it, but from what I've gathered it's actually a composite of two or three television episodes that were edited together and put out on VHS at a time when the market was hungry for product. Unfortunately there has yet to be a theatrical Space:1999 film, but we here hope that one day there might be (provided it's done properly). Either that or, as Eagle One has suggested, a new TV series.

As Validus has already mentioned above, what you're probably thinking of is "Destination Moonbase Alpha", a compilation of the Season 2 two-parter "The Bringers of Wonder".

Several other compilation films were also made, combining various episodes from the first and second seasons. If you want a bit more info on this, visit Martin Willey's excellent "Catacombs" website at: http://www.space1999.net/~catacombs/
There is a section for episode guides and movies.

If I recall correctly, "Destination Moonbase Alpha" was actually given a limited theatrical run in the UK, but I don't think the other compilation films were. Can anyone confirm this one way or the other? (I would love to have seen SPACE:1999 up on the big screen, and "The Bringers of Wonder" is my favourite of that year).

The most interesting of these compilation movies was probably "Alien Attack", since new linking material was shot specially for the compilation (although it was not very good linking material, it was interesting nonetheless!) I remember when I saw this film on TV, I almost jumped out of my seat at the new footage, wondering why I had never seen it before!

I've never seen "Alien Attack", but sure wouldn't mind. Any clue as to whether its on video, anywhere? As to a revival of Space, I'd like to see a TV mini-series, but done ONLY by those who care. As many of the original bunch as possible, Saints preserve Space from waht some have done to Galactica!

Both 'Destination Moonbase Alpha' and 'Alien Attack' were put together by ITC London in the late 70s to try and cash in on the wave of SF interest created by 'Star Wars', and both had limited theatrical releases in the UK, and possibly Europe - I have the Italian version of 'Destination'.

The US put together several compilations of Gerry Anderson series, including two more for 'Space 1999' - 'Journey Through The Black Sun' and 'Cosmic Princess'. These were only ever intended for the US syndicated TV market, and as some of you will be aware, added music and video effects/titles to most.

The only '1999' episode I've seen on the big screen is 'Dragon's Domain', shown at the NFT in London as part of a wider weekend about Telefantasy in general. Unfortunately, it was a 16mm print and didn't really do the episode justice. Now if had been one of the new 35mm DVD transfers...

"Alien Attack" is literally "Breakaway" and "War Games" edited together. Koenig tells Alphans that staying on Alpha is the best choice (end of "Breakaway"). Right after, the Hawks are detected approaching the base (Beginning of "War Games"). It's hard to say which scenes were edited out here. I can't remember if the last scene of "Breakaway" with the newscast and the Meta signal detection was included in "Alien Attack".

These are included, and bar some minor snips both episodes are more or less intact - more so that the US 'Black Sun' and 'Cosmic Princess' compilations which had several minutes cut from each of the episodes included in them.

The final line and shots of Meta are cut, so after Kenig says 'Maybe that's where our future lies... etc" and we see reaction shots of other cast, there is a sho of space with the Meta Signa sound, then we cut straightinto 'War Games' with the Hawks approaching.

Some odd scene replacements also take place at the end of the 'Breakaway' part, and these were to take Simmonds out of any shots so that the added insert of the Lunar Commission gave more emphasis to the fact he had died. i think the last scene of him is sitting up against a wall, noticing blood on his forehead...
