I gotta agree. "Catacombs of the the Moon" gets a bad rap. In theme and mood, it's about as close to Year One as Year Two ever got, along with "Mark of Archanon" and "The Exiles."

Yeah....Year One done tacky!

Catacombs of the Moon was boring and uninvolving...to me at least.

<shrug>

Hey, it's still better than 3/4 of the rest of Year 2.

Even "bad" 1999 is better than current Star Trek, but here is my list of "lackluster" episodes (in no particular odor...I mean order..smile.gif :

1.) Catacombs of the Moon
2.) Devil's Moon
3.) Ring Around the Moon
4.) Full Circle
5.) Mark of Archanon
6.) The Rules of Luton

Jack,

RATM and Full of Circle are pretty bad for year one but I would not toss them in the same dung heap as Catacombs, Devil's Whip, Rules of Luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuton. Of the 48 episodes, RATM and FC could definitely be classified in the #23 and #24 range, but they are still better (though admittedly only slightly) than anything out of s2. (#25....The Seance Spectre or the "best" of s2).

hey, you forgot The Beta Clod although I enjoy seeing Alan Carter run around pjs, which is why, for me anyway, the episode is not on the bottom of the heap...and what about Taybore and Brian the Brainless?!?!? Jack!!! Come back to us, Please!! (Actually, if any one will present a reasonable arguement why these are not whale dung, I'll listen..)

I have to admit though, and I know I risk ridicule, but I do have a slight fondness for Mark of Archanon...<ducking flying apples>....there...I said it... tongue.gif

I dunno......I still say that sitting through Brian the brain is only slightly less pleasent then masturbating with a cheese grater. Only Jar Jar Binks and Jerry Falwell are more annoying. mad.gif

I dunno...Beta Clod, to me, is ok because I liked the idea of the unstoppable creature. Now, the laughing space cloud was a bit much to take for sure. Overall, it could have been executed better, but sometimes concept wins out over execution. Nick doesn't do much for me...being a guy...and a straight one. But Catherine Schell in that skirt.....MEOWWW!!!

Taybore was, to me, silly but not offensive or unwatchable. It was Lost in Space quality to be sure. Brian the Brainless...yeah...pretty bad! I read somewhere that Freddie Frieberger did the voice of Brian...is this true? If so, pretty annoying.

Many of the Year 2 episodes were just silly. Not unwatchable though, like say...ENTERPRISE.

I agree RATM and Full Circle are nowhere near the level of dreck that the year two baddies are.

Ugh...Mark of Archanon. Sorry, I know you like it...but that kid (Pasc...Etrec...whatever) got on my nerves almost as much as Brian the Brain did. Sheesh!

Glad I don't have YOUR experience, Val! wink.gif
The worst Y2 ep is a toss up between The Taybor, and A Matter Of Balance, although I admit that The Beta Cloud is damned close. Amazing isn't it, how all those aliens use Greek?

I know a lot of people hate Brian the Brain -- esp for the silly love scene. But what every one misses in that silly love scene (and I don't think that the writer realized it either) is that Brian now has a HUGE advantage over Helena and/or John. He merely has to threaten to kill one or the other and the other will comply.

Think about it -- these two are the most powerful figures on Alpha and they can easily be manipulated to do evil because they are "in love".

So, I would place BtB a little higher on the scale. smile.gif

Brian the Brain is good for a few laughs. There are some decent FX throughout the episode. I tend to enjoy "All That Glisters". I remember watching this for the first time as a kid and feeling sorry for that poor ol' rock. I know it's terrible.. How can all of Tony's organs and brain function when his heart has stopped. Maya transforms into a rock and yet can still communicate to Koenig and Allan. But it's got a nice pace to it, trying to make us forget everything we just viewed 2 seconds ago. I like the "Irish Cowboy"'s work-jacket. And horrible dialogue like "she's a big girl, Tony". And anothe rgreat Helena line "I'm a Doctor, John, not a miracle worker!" Not being a Star Trek at the time and being 7, I never caught the Star Trek rip-offs that were so rampamt in Year 2. And anytime they use the lab eagle, I'm hooked!

Heh... Are you Petter in disguise, moving on from psychoanalyzing RATM to Brian the Brainless? tongue.gif

Unfortunately, like most of Y2 episodes, there really isn't much thought in this episode. Face value, and yes, it is obvious in a comic book kind of way that Helena and John love each other deeply and can be manipulated based on their love. So what. It merely underscores the shift in characters from caring about the Alphan community as leaders to caring about themselves.

LOL..NOW look who's psychoanalyzing and looking for deeper meanings in crapola? LOL biggrin.gif

I would have to agree with you on all counts there!

I can't stand Brian the Brain... One of the worst of year two. It's right next to Space Warp and Rules of Luton IMO.

I'm surprised that more folks haven't mentioned Space Warp as being one the worst of Y2. If you want to discuss masturbation... this episode smacks of Fred F. spewing his own masturbatory efforts all over the screen. Of all of the Y2 episodes I have the hardest time sitting through this one... Saying it's bad is being too kind.

Brian the Brain reminds me of a child's attempt at creating a S99 episode. It is also one of the most cartoon like episodes of Y2... So where's Fred, Velma, or Scooby Doo? ("Zoinks!" "Jinkies, John I think he's trying to kill us.")

Rules of Luton... I don't think I really need to say anything here.

Devil's Planet is also one of my least favorite... It's a lame excuse fore T&A TV. As if the introduction of Maya and skirts into Y2 wasn't enough of a push for T&A we need to through in an adolescent libido driven "man-in-a-world-of-women" episode... I'm getting visions of Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "First comes the spanking... and then the oral sex."

All That Glisters, Bringers of Wonders (Part I & II), and Beta Cloud are among my guilty pleasures of Y2. I realize that ATG and BC are among the worst episodes of Y2, but I really enjoy watching them... especially Beta Cloud! They are pure cheese, but they never fail to bring a smile to my face, and I feel that Beta Cloud captures the essence of all that is good and bad in Y2: Mystery, action, humor, monsters, tension, bad acting, bad story, bad script, bad alien costumes, and great moments of Wadsworth porno disco. biggrin.gif

The Immunity Syndrome is also one of my least favorite Y2 episodes... It's repleat with bad science, a stupid spot light alien, and a really bad silver suit.... I can stand watching this one only a little more that Space Warp.

Catacombs of the Moon tends to get a lot of flack, but IMO it is one of the most Y1-esque Y2 episodes. It is also one of my favorite Y2 episodes. It suffers from poor production at times, but I really enjoy the story.

Well, Reconn, I think nobody mentions it because it is one of those unspoken truths in life that Space Warp ranks right up there with the worst of Y2. biggrin.gif No one will dispute you on that. I think though that because there are so many "worst" of Y2 episodes (at least 3/4 of the Y2 series) that the argument is more degree of worst rather than is it or isn't it the worst.

Poor Nick Tate. He is such a talented actor yet his talents were wasted on shit like Space Warp. Oh well, it could have be worse. He could have been in The Taybore or Brian the Brainless. That would have been humiliating. Worse than ML and BB staring in that early 80s Harlem Globetrotters Goes to Gilligan's Island TV movie...

I always felt Y2 would have been better if they added a kid and a dog to be heros every week. Yeah, S99 Y2 was Fredster's Scooby Doo in space, no doubt about that. Hmm...I feel a crossover coming on. (Comical, of course..aren't they all comical? <MBAS1 ducks as Senmut hurls a comlock at her tongue.gif >)

Well, I will. tongue.gif RRIIIIIIIIIIP-OFF... Oh, excuse my sneeze. Another Charles Woodgrove (aka, Fred Friedburger) masterpiece. Most (99%) of S99 fan fiction is better than his writing "talents".

ROFLOL!! OMG... You're good ...Monty Python. I never thought of that!! biggrin.gif Devil's Planet does nothing for me either. I assumed that you had to be a male or a lesbian to appreciate it. Evidently, you need to be a male or a lesbian with bad taste as well.

IIIIIIIII...don't know. ATG is just plain silly and sucks. Although I was excited when I first saw it thinking Verdeschi was going to get killed off in that ep but that just didn't happen. For BC, well, the debauched and bad taste side does come out in drooling over scenes of Alan Carter half naked in PJs...and fantasizing that I am Sandra groping him..other than that...heh

BofW is not a bad premise (we redid it in S99TCA...but note it was a complete overhaul!) however, you are right in that the way it came out was just too, too cheesy.

Immunity Syndrome could make a fine Y1 episode with CONSIDERABLE revamping and rewriting. Take out the women in the gliders and cat suits, take out the dumb "I am I, You are you, I am the walrus, koo koo ka chu" as well as a ton or other things and you could have the beginings of a decent story. As it is though....

Oh agreed. The fact that it was written by Terpiloff, a Y1 story master, would make it a great Y1 episode. Who knows what it would have really been like had FF not lobotimized it?
