Bonjour laugh.gif

My name is Fred, I'm 25 year-old, I live in paris (France), i work in an internet office and i first watched "matter of life and death" in 1985.

I love Space 1999 (=Cosmos 1999 in france and Canada) for its mystery, atmosfear and british darkness. The eagle technology is remarkable, the stories are modern faery-tale like and there's no ending to the moon saga. My favorite year one episodes are :

Dragon's domain
Another time Another Place
The Mission of the darians
Earthbound

And year two :

Bringers of wonder (part one)
Bringers of wonder (part two)
Seeds of destruction
Dorzak

And yours?

Hello Fred, and all other fans. My name is Dan Hettmannsperger III and I live in Stockton, California. I'm 35 and saw my first episode (Dragon's Domain) back when it aired in the mid-70's. Space 1999 is my favorite Sci-Fi show (after which comes Lexx, Outer Limits(original), Star Trek:TNG, Blake's 7, Starblazers, and Andromeda). It is difficult for me to pick my favorite episodes....Dragon's Domain, Breakaway, Black Sun and New Adam New Eve are big on my list.

I'm also a Buddhist, a poet, a philosopher, and a lover of History. Nice to meet you all...... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Howdy, y'all!

My name is M.gunnerQuist (spelled like a programming function or file name) and I'm a computer artist. I live in the southern part of the United States. I started watching Space:1999 when I was a child in the mid-1970s and never saw it again until 10 or 15 years later when the series was released on laserdisc. My friend bought the discs so i was able to see them again. Now I have the DVDs!

For my part in Space:1999 fandom, I want to make a really good eagle flight simulator videogame. (Visit my Videogames forum here on this bulletin board!) If any of you are bi-lingual, I might need help translating it into different languages.

I love Maya! My dream is to get married and visit her chateux in the south of France for during my honeymoon.

Greetings everyone.

My name is Chad. I'm 34 years old and live in Manchester, England, UK. Work as a Delivery Manager for Royal Mail.

Started watching Space:1999 as a kid when it first came out in Britain and have been a massive fan ever since.

I've got too many favorite episodes to mention, however, "The Troubled Spirit" always stands out because it scared the life out of me when I first saw it!

Other favorite shows are Babylon 5 and Jeremiah.

Great topic!

I'm Anthony, live in New England and have been a fan since the show originally aired in 1975 (when I was 11 -- you do the math smile.gif )

It too is my favorite series! I love the look and feel, the stories (Y1 by far) and the characters to name a few pluses. I have the entire series on DVD and the first year on laserdisc.

Hi I'm Dana,

I am 35, male and from Maine. I live with my Partner of three years and have a weird cat named Willow.

I love year one SPACE:1999 and a few of the second season eps too. I've been a fan since I was a little tyke, watching it during it's first run on American television.

I collect comics, read classic novels, write and draw, and customize action figures. I also enjoy Buffy, Angel, Fright Night the Munsters , the Doom Patrol and Universal Monsters. I recently made some SPACE:1999 custom action figures. I made a model of the moon's surface and put a model of Alpha on it, I just started collecting the SPACE DVDs and hope to have them all soon.

Hello:

I'm a forty year old graphic designer/advertising firm owner. I fell in love with the show as a young teenager...and when I finally had the chance to watch it again, after nearly 25 years, I expected to be thoroughly disappointed. I'm happy to say the show has not only aged well, it has actually improved with age.

So much of what was criticized in its time actually resurfaced in shows like the X-Files [the mysterious unknown force, the endings open to interpretation, the cool affect of the lead characters]. It makes me wonder if the show--obviously with some change in the date--had aired a couple decades later. would it have been so thoroughly trashed by the critics? I doubt it.

If for nothing else, the show needs to be greatly appreciated for the risks it took...and for its incredibly atmospheric tone. Nothing in the years since has touched this series accomplishments. I honestly believe that's in no small part due to Sylvia Anderson. As much a fan of Gerry Anderson as I am, he has NEVER been able to capture the magic and "feel" of his earlier successes since they broke up. A situation made even more sad by the fact that he's so incredibly bitter. If you read interviews with Sylvia, she is generous in her admission of other's contributions [including Gerry's]; he, on the other hand, either completely disses the woman or just elects to eliminate any reference to her at all.

If the guy had any common sense, he'd put his past behind him and team up with her again--purely on a professional level--to do the sort of work that earned him the reputation in the first place. One has only to look at Terrahawks and Space Precinct to see that something is indeed "missing" in the formula.

Nice to meet you Tom! I have to say that I agree. . . .Gerry Anderson without Sylvia kinda reminds me of John Lennon without Paul. . . .(sigh) Oh well.....

Tom:

I agree. I do think Sylvia was a positive influence, but I'm wondering too if we (Anderson fans) haven't become a bit too sophisticated and the Anderson's material has not kept up? I dunno.

I did wnat to say that I have seen several episodes of Terrahawks and do enjoy them. I thought it was well done (for the most part) and the alien "family" is hysterical (IMO, of course).

Welcome to the Forums!

With work done and some time on my hands I finally am getting around to posting a note to this fine addition to Space fandom. I first started watching Space 1999 from the very first commercials airing in advnace of the series in July/August 1975 and have been a fan ever since.

Favourite episodes? Well, I have to admit that while I prefer Y1 to Y2, there is no doubt that the pacing of the second season makes for better watching.....but, I am a strong defender of Y2 eps, especially some of the 'worst'. I really do happen to like All That Glisters, Mark of Archanon, and Catacombs of the Moon...though even I have little room in my heart for Brian the Brain or Beta Cloud.

While I have yet to show any episodes to my children (oldest 8), the eldest does recognize 'your spaceship, Daddy!' when I happen to watch an episode while putting the youngest to bed or when they play in the basement and look up at the Mattel eagles on the ceiling or play with the dinkies in the trunk. laugh.gif

I'm Phil, 40 year old music teacher in a special education agency in New York.

I first watched Space 1999 during it's premiere in Arizona, later my family moved us back to New York and I caught most of Year two there. For some reason the changes didn't bother me too much then, I can't remember why but it was a time of tremendous stress for all of us.

I became interested in Space again around 1993 as we bought a PC and I signed onto the internet for the first time. I used to use LINKS, GOPHER, ARCHIE and USENET mostly in the beginning, signing into my friends account at the local university to read the old SFluvers Digests (Anyone remember those?) and eventually got AOL version 1.0.

I decided I wanted to view uncut episodes of Space and worked on getting tapes of the laserdiscs. At the time it was airing on the Sci Fi channel and they were editing it very badly. Even my poor memory was catching terrible cuts in dialog and action!

I enjoyed the enthusiasm of the fans I met online once I signed onto the first Space 1999 email list and followed that list until it moved to YAHOOGROUPS in July 2000. I eventually became listowner of the group but I sort of fell ass backwards into that role.

My favorite Y1 episodes would be Matter of Life and Death, Black Sun, War Games, Another Time Another Place, Guardian of Piri, Force of Life and Dragons Domain. I pretty much like all of Y1 with the exceptions being The Last Enemy and Full Circle.
For year two my favorites include The Metamorph, Journey to Where, The Taybor (Guilty Pleasure status), Brian the Brain (Guilty Pleasure status), New Adam New Eve, AB Chrysalis, The Seance Spectre (A Kitchen sink episode), Dorzak, Devils Planet, The Immunity Syndrome and The Dorcons.

I'm also a great fan of Babylon 5 and all it's spinoffs. I go to a lot of conventions, some of them media related and have been to two Space 1999 conventions so far. (See the convention threads for info)

As for current Space stuff, I love the DVD's, the new toys that are coming out, (Konami and Enterprise), I love attending Chiller Theatre in New Jersey and getting some character or bit actor from Space to sign my DVD's and Laserdiscs. So far I've met Valerie Leon, Katheryn Lee Scott, Sarah Douglas, David Prowse and Shane Rimmer.
I also love the new POWYS media books and have been trying to help the project anyway I can. cool.gif

Hey, I remember SF-Lovers digest too!
And JMS's usenet messages, which were a pretty cool insight into the making of a sftv series.
I just used email and usenet and ignored the web in those days. And then I suddenly discovered the cybermuseum and the cybrary...

And the rest is history! rolleyes.gif

Saul Jaffe who ran the SFLovers digest is a local fan (to me) and I see him at several very fannish conventions in the area. By fannish, I mean conventions where a lot of the programing consists of fans talking to fans about things fans are interested in. Not always science fiction either! Many times the guests of honor are almost ignored at these conventions. (Which is good if you have an interest in the guests, not a lot of competition for autographs or conversations about their work!)

The JMS digest stuff I still get, but now it's all about the three comic books he's writing (Spider Man, Rising Stars and Midnight Nation) and the Showtime series Jeremiah. Plus the digests include a lot of commentary on JMS's opinion on current events. Interesting stuff. At early time I remember printing out SF Lovers digests that I was interested in, in an insane attempt to conserve hard disk space! blink.gif I may have saved a bunch on 5.25 floppies but I'd have to do some digging to find them. I used to love reading the book reviews in it. I think my first hard drive had 40 megs on it or something like that. That PC is still running but has a new motherboard and two hard drives now. Still has windows 3.11 on it though! smile.gif

I hope we get to read someday when and how you decided to create the Catacombs of the Moon. The first few times I read it I loved looking at your essays (I may have printed them somewhere!) but I was totally nuts over the old Cybrary at the time. I'm glad to have it on disc now but I kind of miss the opportunity to just access it on a whim like I do the Catacombs and the rest.

Today the Catacombs is the best resource for information around on Space 1999. Be interesting to see when you got the idea for it and how you implemented it. I must visit the site at least daily looking something up or just surfing. happy.gif

I can beat that- no hard disc, 512k memory (k, not meg), booted off a floppy (CP/M operating system, not even DOS rolleyes.gif )
That's what I used to write the essays that eventually became the Catacombs.

Actually the origin of the Catacombs is even older- in 1975, I made up a notebook after every episode, with plot summary, comments and sketches. Essentially what the Catacombs Episode Guide is now. cool.gif

Around 1978, the children's comic Look-In printed the address of a couple of fan clubs- the Nick Tate club (still going, and on Space 1999.Net), and Omicorn. Omicorn was actually a Star Trek club which they mistakenly listed as Space 1999, but the club got such a big response that it created a Space 1999 section. My first essays were typed on a manual typewriter for these clubs. After I read the Making of Space1999 and Starlog's Technical Notebook, I planned a series of essays that would build into a book about the series. Eventually I got the CP/M computer and typed them all up. Some of those got printed in the Alpha League club (run by Erwin Stank and Bob Wood), others in the Nick Tate club newsletter.

When I discovered the Cybrary, Robert used a few of things I wrote. But I had so much, I decided to create my own site- the Catacombs.

And that's the origin of the Catacombs...

I'm new to the Forum and I'm just finding my way 'round. I'm 39 years old and work as a clerk in England. I became a fan from the first episode when it was first shown. I soon became a fan of Martin Landau and he is still my favourite actor.

I prefer Series One to Series Two although I do like the character of Maya excellently portrayed by Catherine Schell.

I look forward to taking part in the Forums and reading comments from the best fans of Science Fiction ie. Space: 1999 fans of course!
