I've been looking for it this week, I thought it was supposed to be released last Tuesday? Maybe I misunderstood. Wouldn't be the first time. I want to have it under the tree for Christmas. I know the fans pretty much trashed this film but my kids loved it. They play with the toys all the time, listen to the soundtrack, I even pulled out my old Matchbox Tracy Island with the classic Thunderbirds toys for them. One of the highlights of last summer was winning tickets for the movie and making a big family day out of it. Good stuff. The last long car trip we took I was playing a few Fanderson Soundtracks on the CD player and they loved the classic Gray themes from the show. My biggest gripe about the film is that it did so poorly there won't be any sequels where they give us a meatier story of the Tracy brothers. (Maybe let the brothers talk a little more on screen?) Oh well, if I can manage it I'll go out tomorrow night and look again. I know the little beasties will flip their lids if they open it on the 25th. And maybe I can get my daughter to give back my Invader Zim DVD's that she grabbed when I ordered them. I mean, how much can you listen to an 8 year old sing the Doom song? The Doom Song ![]() |

Got the DVD today at Best Buy. It was stuck on the bottom shelf of the children's section. No endcap displays, no cardboard stands. Sheesh! Plus the store was packed since it was Christmas Eve. I know Universal didn't push this film in the theaters but I was hoping they would push it in DVD. I was expecting some stock at BJ's Wholesale and/or Costco. Nada! I think Kangaroo Jack got a better promotion. Oh well, it's going under the tree and I think the kid's will be happy. I will. I'm ready to watch it again. I wanted to see it again in the summer before it left the theaters but we waited too long. (I think it stuck around 3 weeks, about the amount of time Buckaroo Banzai did!) Merry Christmas everybody! |

In the USA The Thunderbirds movie is being bundled with that Tiger movie (2 baby Tigers have an adventure movie....I forget the title...probably something simple like Two Tigers) It's at BJ's Wholesale for $17.99. If you dig Tigers and wanted to check out the Thunderbirds it works out to about $10 per DVD. Not a bad deal. I've pulled two scenes off the Thunderbirds DVD to teach a simple musical concept to my students this week. It's a simple lesson on themes where (This is Special Ed btw so it has to be very accessible) they listen to some music then we play the video of the scene where it comes from. The video is the candy that holds their attention (Special Ed....short attention spans) so it works pretty well. I used the music from the Oil Rig scene and the introduction to Lady Penelope. The Oil Rig wasn't as useful, probably too much other stuff happening in the theme and later on screen. But The Lady P stuff worked great. Remember, almost no one watched this movie in the US so it was a treat talking about her theme and then watching the kids as she walked to the car and then car later fly's away. ![]() Around the room I heard, "No Way!" "It flies?!" "Cool!" Great fun. I think these two scenes were the films stronger points and I would have liked more of that on screen. Oh well, it's good material for my job though and from here were going to move onto more classical themes and cap it off with an easy composition exercise to round it out. It's always fun to bring some SF music I love into the classroom, the danger is does it work to illustrate the goal you want to teach, or do I just want to hang out and watch Thunderbirds (Or Space 1999) with my students? In the past I've pulled clips off of UFO (The Sound of Silence Opening) Space 1999 (War Games, Black Sun, Force of Life (FOL is a classroom favorite)) to illustrate different ideas with various success. Anyway, I was pretty disappointed in the Jonathan Frakes commentary on the Thunderbirds DVD, it seems I enjoy director or writer commentary more and when a director has been an actor first, the commentary isn't as interesting to me. The Writer commentaries I've listened to so far seem to be able to have a good sense of timing and sense while always keeping quiet during a good scene. Joe Stracyznski, Harlan Ellison and Alan Brennarts are the ones I'm thinking of. I did listen to the commentary on Amadeus but I forget if it was the writer and the director on that one. It was pretty good though. To sum up, I'd love for there to be another Thunderbirds movie with the resources this one had (But with better promotion). I think the series deserves a second chance. Maybe a CGI Thunderbirds would do the trick but I still feel a film series could succeed. Unlikely it will happen. |
