I've only been to one convention worth noting, and that was a Star Trek convention that was put on in 1989 when I was living in Virginia Beach. I had fun but none of the big stars were there and I spend too much money on piles of crap. Looking back now I can't even remember a single thing I bought. I am planning on going to SpaceCon VX if I can gather the time and $$$$. I'm in California now so the distance is difficult but not impossible.

Well, I've only been to one 1999 con....but lots of sci-fi and Trek shows over the years.

Probably the highlights were the Breakaway Con and Grand Slam -- both out in LA.
My only complaint about Breakaway was the dealer's room was pretty anemic. But, to meet nearly all the 1999 cast was a dream come true.

I took an elevator with Johnny Byrne at one point -- just he and I and we chatted about the script I had in my hand for The Biological Computer and we talked for a few minutes about some of the differences between the different versions of the script that he had written. Talk about cool!!! That was something that will remain one of my lifelong convention memories.

Which cast members did you and meet and what were they like? I'm really curious to know. Anyone dish any dirt? Any words either positive or negative? I've never met anyone associated directly with S1999 so you will I hope forgive my child-like curiosity. rolleyes.gif

Everyone was there except Martin Landau, Catherine Schell, Tony Anholt and the guy who plays Kano (can't remember his name off the top of my head).

I was talking to Barry Morse when Barbara Bain walked up and gave him a hug -- she had just arrived for the con. Everyone was very nice. Barry Morse went on a rant at one point about Gerry Anderson not taking the time to come to the convention and meet the fans during his stage appearance. He seemed angry about it. So, that was something...I don't think he likes Gerry Anderson much. But, Barry was very nice and signed a lot more autographs than I would have at his age. His memory of 1999 and even his appearance of Outer Limits (which I brought up) was very good considering how long ago those shows were made.

Zenia Merton was very nice and seemed to spend a lot of time with the fans during the "greet and meet" social they had before (or was it after? I dunno.) Barbara and Barry performed "Love Letters".

Nick was cool and very sociable as well. Ditto for Anton Phillips and Prentiss Hancock.

Johnny Byrne was very accessible and interesting to talk to.

The only one who seemed a little "cold" was Barbara Bain and that was because she only appeared for the "Love Letters" play and didn't sign autographs or make any other appearances (that I recall).

It was a fun trip and I really enjoyed the con. If they ever do a show like this again, I highly recommend it.

I've been going to Science Fiction conventions for many years, my first was in 1983. I like all types of conventions with probably the coroporate ones the least. Like Creation or Chiller Theatre shows.

I love sitting and listening to panels I'm interested in. Besides media related I like to go to regular geek conventions where the fans meet to discuss the current crop of SF books and meet their faviorite authors

My all time favorite convention was the 1989 Boston Worldcon. Just an amazing event. The Worldcon will be back in Boston in 2004 and this time I'm bringing the whole family. My local convention is ICON, held in Stony Brook NY. ICON has a media and an authors track. They bring in the TV people to make membership money and bring in the authors to keep it like an older style con.

For Space 1999, I did the best I could for Breakaway in 1999. I couldn't attend but I read all the reports, pre-supported and even listened to Nick Tate and Chirs Paulsen (One of the committee members of Breakaway) on an internet radion show.

My first was Main Mission 2000 which as far as I know was one of the most ambitious SPace 1999 conventions ever attempted. It made a lot of mistakes along the way but now, almost three years later I have to say it was an amazing time.

I also went to Spacecon 2001 was could be considered a RelaxaCon. It had 50 - 100 fans and two guests, Nick Tate and Barry Morse. I loved Spacecon for the location, the laid back schedule (I almost didn't sleep for 4 days at Main Mission2000) Some might consider this a failure but spacecon never went into the red financially and except for the cancellation of a launch at Kennedy everything worked out really well.

For full details on all the Space 1999 conventions check out this link and you can get an idea of the guests and activities.

my page of Main Mission photos is here:

and I still run off video copies of video shot at Breakaway (Courtesy Jon Stadler), Main Mission (Me) and Spacecon 2001 (Me again)

http://www.space1999.net/~catacombs/main/i.../videophil.html

I have to run off a few more sets so if you want copies make note of the page and ask me for copies in a couple of weeks as I have 3 - 4 requests right now.
Also note I make these at cost, the price of tape is the same but US postage has increased so the prices quoted will be higher due to postage.

I also made a few audiotapes at Main Mission and Spacecon and at some point i want to either convert these to MP3 or transcribe them completely. Right now I've stopped copying them and distributing them.

The actors and writers of Space 1999 are a very nice bunch I had some of the best times talking with Johnny Byrne, Chris Penfold, John Muir (Who was great at Main Mission2000). I really began to appreciate Barry Morse at Spacecon 2001 and Catherine at Main Mission was just the best.

Nick Tate at Spacecon 2001 was also wonderful. When the launch at Kennedy was cancelled walked over to him (Find the group shot in the pictures) and said I bet Alan Carter could get that rocket working! He said something like, "Your damn right!" biggrin.gif

Well, do your best to get there! There are two Space:1999 actors scheduled - Barry Morse and Zienia Merton. Two birds with one stone!

Check out the "pinned" topic for more info on this upcoming Con.

blink.gif Oh! Why did I never notice this former topic? I had already asked this question to you but no one answered me!

Jack the Fool, are you still with us? So, you went to LA in 1999? Do you know I did too? So, we may have met and chatted together : we probably know each other, don't we?

I suppose you remember me : I was the young Frenchman with a red-sleeved-uniform on the right of this picture:

http://members.tripod.com/~Space1999Con/Br...way-index2.html

I came from Paris and I was so glad to have my vacations in the United States (you're American, aren't you?). I flew to your country on September 9th 1999 (exctly like Koenig in "Breakaway") and I flew back on 14th. I was alone until I reached the Radisson Hotel : there I recognized other French fans I had met in a previous Convention in Lyon in 1998.

I was the Guest N 44 (I still possess Rose Marie Badget's badge) and I watched Message From Moonbase Alpha in September 13th. What a surprise it was!

And yours? Who on Earth were you? I'd like to see your face because I had both a camera and a video-camera. As well, I may have a picture of you among the Alphans! I'm sure I'd remeber you if I see your portrait.

If you want, we can speak in private.

Read you later?
