Martin:

Was checking over your well-done 2001 vs. 1999 section. In watching 2001 the other day I noticed that both 2001 & 1999 used that "puffy look" around the doors (see Eagle cockpit). Also, the odd shaped doors in the Odyssey ship (pod bay) were used on Space:1999 (I think in Year 2's AB Chysalis when Koenig and Carter go into the cave -- the elevator door).

Oh one other thing -- in both 1999 & 2001, the "virus infection" was used as a cover story...though I guess that in the case of 1999 they sort of believed it a bit more whereas in 2001 they knew it was a lie from the beginning.

I also notice that both seem to share the same aesthetic sensibility. Both Alpha and the base from 2001 look essentially to me like nothing so much as a high tech hospital. Stark white and artless. There is a blandness to both locations that reminds me of German Bauhaus and is seen in the purely "fuctional" aspects of both locations. It is surprising to me that given current trends in electronics no one has yet invented a Commlock. I would imagine that today it would be fairly simple- a tool that combines a palm pilot, a pager, a cell phone and a garage door opener.

btw the 2001 - 1999 photo guide is here

Cell phones that can run java applications are common; picture phones that include a camera are widespread now (at least in Europe- the US is a little behind), there's even phones running linux and windows due soon. They have infra-red and wireless radio ports to link to your computer, so why not operate the vcr or car door?

I think 2001 inspired a lot of S1999's look and feel.

Even the name of the series reflects the film.
