Breakaway
A massive nuclear explosion knocks the moon out of orbit and propels it inexorably away from Earth. On the lunar surface, John Koenig decides his entire crew should stay put, reasoning that to attempt an evacuation would be suicidal

Well, that gives away the ending.

According to Fanderson, it looks like these will be the new Network prints, BUT... you'll get an ITV4 logo permanently in a corner of the screen, the end titles will be squashed and talked over, and there will be loads of adverts interrupting every 10 minutes.

I can't get Freeview at home ("coming soon" says the Freeview website for my postcode, and has so for the last 2 years), and I don't have satellite or cable, so I won't be watching it.

I think that's highly unlikely! Network - at the behest of Tim Beddows - make a substantial financial investment in restoring all 24 episodes only to see that investment undercut by a simultaneous free to air transmission of said episodes? Somehow I doubt it.

The transfers ITV4 will be using will likely be those used for the Carlton DVD release.

probably- there was a report that the Saint on ITV4 was new digital transfers, but another report that the UFO shown looked identical to the Carlton DVDs, not the recent remaster.

Just like UKGOLD doesn't have new remastered serials of Doctor Who that have been released on DVD. Of course, I believe they won't be showing the "classic" series in the near future...

I'm watching ITV4's showing of 'Breakaway' right now and can confirm that the version they're using is the same as that used for the Carlton release and the 1998 BBC2 repeat. This is most definitely not the Network/BBC Resources restoration.

Also BBC4 have adopted an incredibly annoying habit of going into commercial breaks in the middle of a sentence! Can you believe that? Just now Bergman didn't even manage to finish saying to Koenig 'Look, why don't you have a word with her' before the ads came in. Crazy. ..

...and they've just edited out Koenig's glimpse of Warren and Sparkman in the medical centre. *Sigh*

Roll on tomorrow!!

Hello All.

I have got Telewest cable, yet there is no sign of ITV4. Do I really care?

I suppose it is good news that Space: 1999 and other ITC programmes are going to be airing once again, though perhaps someone can explain to me why I do not ever get excited by the prospect of this anymore?

Is it that I know the presentation on any television channel is going to be somewhat depressing?

Or could it be because we now live in an age when we can watch recordings of our favourite shows whenever we want and it has all become too easy?

While DVD and video has given us total control over what is on our television screens, one cannot help feel it may have also robbed us of something special.

Regards,

an Old Fogey

For fans of the series, yes, it' not too terribly exciting. "What do I care?" one might say. "I've got all the videos and DVDs." But there are many, MANY people who don't know about Space:1999. And having a program air on a TV channel reaches a large audience. An audience who might be influenced to find out more about the program and or purchase videos. If it comes on and you're home, watch it. Help the ratings.
One of the things I've enver understood about A&E's agreement with Space:1999 is that they release ALL episodes onto DVD, yet don't air it. In fact, I don't remember one Gerry Anderson show being aired off A&E, yet A&E airs the Saint, Danger Man, the Prisoner, all A&E DVD/video releases.

The last time I saw Space:1999 on air was when the Sc-Fi Channel first was airing over here in America, and that was around the early 90s...when it was good(the Sci-Fi Channel, that is).

I agree with you, Huntsman.

It's always nice to see a cherished series turn up on television, in the knowledge that it may turn up a few new fans.

And of course, it's nice to watch the episodes without going to the bother of putting on the videos/dvds laugh.gif

And I used to hate to have to ff thru tapes. That DVD load time is just WAY too long... biggrin.gif

A & E pissed me off when they stopped airing the Avengers...but it really doesn't make sense that they don't show Sp99...and SCI FI sucks a big suck now...I stopped watcing that channel when they took off the Bionic Woman and the Six Millin Dollar man...BUT THEY CAN PLAY BUCK ROGERS and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA IN MARATHONS!

Sci-Fi wasn't too bad when they first started transmitting. But even when they did air Space:1999, it was highly edited for more commercial time.

Unfortunately, ITV4 aren't showing the episodes in the correct order. They're doing the same with UFO, too. Bizarre.

We also ran many syndicated programs like that, too, at my station. New programs, as well. It's the decision of the syndicators or distributors to air them in "their" order. Yes, it is bizarre...

Yep. That's fair comment.

Is there anywhere else in the world other than on ITV4 that is showing SPACE:1999 at the moment?

If so, how is it treated?

ITV4's order appears to be following that which was the standard order for screening the series in the UK first time around.

Our cable network has recently given us ITV4.

I've seen a couple of episodes of Space: 1999 on there - 'Ring around the Moon' and 'The Last Sunset' - and think their treatment of it is a disgrace.

That lovely scene in 'The Last Sunset' with Paul and Sandra getting close was all gone which completely ruins it.

The interruptions for commercials mid-way through something is also extremely annoying, but this is ITV all over these days.

All I can say is, thank heavens for the DVDs!

The Sci-Fi Channel did something like that with Space well over a decade. It was 1993/4, I hadn't seen any Space:1999 for well over a decade. The Sci-Fi Channel finally comes to New Orleans, and Space:1999 is on in the afternoon. It was butchered so much for commercial time, I coudln't bare to watch it. Sorry to hear that...
