What do you think they would have done to keep from being bored to death?

When I was onboard ship in the Navy I had a small handful of things to kill time- my walkman, books, and they had a television in every divisions berthing space hooked to a single VCR that always showed films. We also had a library with a few thousand books and of course there was always card games and so on.....

I'd imagine that the Alphans (thanks to better technology) had more things avalable. Pity they couldn't have had a holodeck.... smile.gif

Kano and Koenig often play a game of chess. And apparently they all like doing puzzle.

Agreed, but after a while the library and lack of no new media would kinda really get on my nerves. I'd have to start a newsletter or something to help with the boredom.

Sex.

Well, at least in Year Two.

I don't know.......even sex gets pretty dull after awhile. Remind me to tell you about my ex-wife sometime. blink.gif

I often wondered what all the Alphans were doing on the base.

In the Lambda Factor, you'll notice there's a recreation room.
They play chess of course but spirritual games (with Zeno cards). laugh.gif
They also listen to the guitare in Troubled Spirrit.
In the exiles, Maya and helena speak about a ball......
In the Spectre, the Sanderson Team watches Nature images (diapositives, in French).

But did you notice : we never see a lunch room (like in "Next Ge" or "Deep Space Nine").

If I'm not wrong, Simmonds is the only one who clearly says he's boring on Moonbase Alpha.
All the others are strangely resignated! dry.gif

Year One - getting to know each other really well
Year Two - Sex and the Moonbase
Year Three - The Wonder Years
Year Four - Married with Moonbase

I think there is a fairly good chance a few people woulod attempt or commit suicide...this could have made for a few good story lines.

You're pulling my leg because I'm French, don't you? mad.gif

I don't want to joke on it!

The question is serious : Year One is sadness meanwhile in Year Two, Alpha Moonbase is a sort of Amusement Park (watch the Beta Cloud : you must catch the monsters in order to win a Moon Prize (a flight to Psychon).

I wonder why Helena and John do not marry in any episode (excepted Another Time another Place)?

Well, if I could go to Alpha, I'd be happier than on Earth on these days.
Why? because I have lost my job and the rooms in Alpha look comfortable!
Is there a Library? smile.gif

I was trying to interject a little humor...but nothing aimed at the French...I agree that all seem pretty resigned to their fate way too early in the show.

Being out of work sucks...I wish you the best in finding something suitable as soon as possible.

As for Helena and John marrying...I sort assumed that with the base etc there was just to much responsibility and other issues...so they would wait until they found a planet and got settled in on the new planet before getting married. I think that's a little naive on their part but probably in line with what they were thinking. Also the marriage thing usually seems to ruin the suspense and the chase on screen much as it does in real life. As for S1999, I think they would have eventually married provided neither disappeared from the show like Bergman did. However, this would have been in like a season four or five.

As a writer myself, I often wonder how Commander Koenig's character would have developed had Helena suffered a tragic death. Would he be able to muster the strength to go on? Would he (as Eagle One mentioned) consider suicide? How would it affect his ability to lead the rest of Alpha? Would he eventually.....given enough time.....ever heal enough to love again, or would the loss of both his wife and Helena simply drive Koenig so deeply into himself that he would never be able to love another? It is a pity that such questions will never be answered....... sad.gif

You are perfectly right, Validus, since when you loose your job, you can receive the ASSEDIC (819 Euros last months : not bad) but it's very hard to find a new job after September 11th! sad.gif

Well, I begin to wonder........... Do the Alphans use some money inside their base? Are there some shops? Who knows something?

I can remember in Star Trek 4 Captain Kirk says the 20th Century still use money to obtain things!
But how well can they limit themselves in the 23th Century without money exchange?????????

If they didn't have a currency, I bet cigarettes and other tobacco products would become the defacto currency.

I agree...barter is the oldest currency. If not a product then a service. I'm always intrigued that in countless science fiction movies and television shows the currency seems to be a "credit". Perhaps "credits" anticipate the possibility of a one-currency global economy......?

I think Helena and John wait until they find a planet to be married because they are romantic.
And I think alphans haven't any money because in "the Taybor" they exchange their things.
Eagle One

I'm sure the alpha's had to barter with the Taybor because their currency would have been worthless to him...assuming the alpha's had any currency.

Boredom mad.gif I know that one well.
Try cabin fever. Living in Wisconsin sub zero tempertures.
I'm good at climbing walls.
I know I'm in trouble when I enjoy housecleaning.
The computer becomes a life line to the outside world.
Things I refuse to do, watch day time TV, Soaps are for saps (don't take offense).
REAL TV give me a break mad.gif it insults my intelligence.
Public radio the BEST, lots of new ideas to hash over.
Outside chores on the farm a God send, even if it's so cold it burns my skin and I have to come in every 15 mins to warm up.
Crafts forfill that need to create.
I don't think I could live on a Moonbase unless I could have animals/nature.

I really don't think man could live for a long time on a moonbase with out coming back down to Earth for a little nature. It would be like living in a plastic bubble.

I like to imagine that the crew of Alpha have a few Playstation 2's and enough memory cards & games to keep them going for years to come. laugh.gif

blink.gif You are totally wrong, my dear Validus! laugh.gif Have you forgotten the Alphans broke away from earth on September 13th 1999? They have never seen the 21st century machines(Playstation 2, Game Boy Advance or X-Box)!

The lattest console in the USA was the Dreamcast : when I flew back to Paris after the Los Angeles Convention, I remember I read "USA Today" in the plane and one article said the Dreamcast arrived on sale on September 9th (09/09/99)!

So I think in the beginnig of "Breakaway", Commander Koenig carries such a machine in his luggage! Then after, they loose contact with earth and video games industry! sad.gif
