One of the things I am afraid to lose at this point is freedom of
speech. Yes, the list has had it's problems in the past, buy these
problems have been overcome. These problems were not overcome
with rules and regulations, but by mature adults co-existing in mutual
respect. There is no evidence to suggest that rules and regulations
will eliminate the possibility of any problems in the future. In fact
history tells us that no government has effectively legislated morality
yet. Human nature will tell us it is just about inevitable that someone
will subscribe to the list, and act like an idiot for their own personal
enjoyment. I don't like to think that a long term member of this list
has been grouped into this aforementioned idiom. Nor do I expect
at anyone has intentionally attempted to defame anyone's particular
role models.
Let freedom of speech reign, and see people for who they are. If we
have to deal with someone who is intentionally being unpleasant in
the future, than that is what we have to do.

Subject: Space1999: R: Space 1999: Season 1 vs Season 2
Maurizio requested me to forward this to the list.
____________________________________________________________
Hi all,
>Season 1 vs. Season 2
...Well,this topic will be always, I think, our main
reason of "inner polemic", but it is not too bad
because each time there are new good points
to discuss.
Here's my $0.02:
The structure of the season1 was extremely different,
either regarding the contents, as for the screen quality.
Just a few aspects:
The stage
What lot of people consider a neutral, aseptic, habitat
(and I include here even the relationships, more or less
formal between the characters)
was, instead, a subtle highlighter of tensions, fears, enthusiasm
and disappointment. It worked fine for the contact with the aliens
as well. The same is valid for the haunting, moody atmosphere of the MBA.
The originality
Consider the aliens of the first season.
I can't forget, for example, that the first encounter the alphans had
with
extraterrestrial intelligence was with Zantor (the best Alien
character I've ever seen so far). While other series (even s1999 season2)
wasted their time trying to invent new ridiculous masks to describe
diversity, and
most of the time just hostility,in Earthbound we enjoy the masterly and
effective
use of the colours (make-up and dresses) to depict a wise, peaceble and
believable
alterity (sp?).
So we don't ask why they can speak english or similar silly questions
but simply we get involved into the drama (that's it). Long discussion
here...
The cast
Each single actor/actress gave the best during the first season because,
in my opinion again, they realised they were starting a new ambitious
project.
They already were, except for some security extra-parts ;),
well-experienced
people who influenced quite a lot the naturalness of their role.
Yes, I said and repeat naturalness, because, in spite of many rushed
opinions and
superficial reviews I still consider the first season much more
realistic, deep, feelings-caring
and warm than the season 2. What does the term "wooden" mean? The
relationships are
often awkward in the actual life. People are complex, outgoing or
introverse, rude or polite,
extroverted or shy. Was Helen wooden in Matter of Life and Death? Was
Jonh wooden
when he realised that Simmonds was done for?And Paul in Black Sun when he
says goodbye to
John and Victor in the languishing Main Mission?
I found none of these magics in the second season and the cleverness of
Maya didn't seem
enough to me to stand comparison with the unforgettable season one. Even
the main cast
seemed to think beyond S1999. The show had become a serial product at the
mercy
of producers, networks and ratings by now. That's just my opinion,
obviously.
Maurizio

Subject: Space1999: CyberMuseum gets noticed in Quebec!
Hi Marcy! Hi everybody else in the Alphan world!
I just want you to know that Marcy's 1999 Cyber Museum got a VERY good
review in a Quebec magazine on internet (in French) that is called "Planete
Internet Quebec". There is a short info on the site, the reference to go
there (http//..) and a picture of the main page! The review is part of a
review of several sites dedicated to cult hit tv shows from teh 60's and 70's.
I'll try to send the relevant extracts to Marcy and the rest of ya by
tomorrow morning (promises, promises... ;-) ). Hang on 'till then.
BTW...
To whom do I send my personnal contribution for the maintenance of our
mailing list? And will 20$ US do? I have so much fun reading and lurking
(and sometimes writing to you) that I just want it to go on forever. This
list is one of the best I've seen so far on the net. And although the going
gets though sometimes, well... Somehow the tough alphans that we are keep
going. There. I said it. Marshmallow mode *on* now... ;-)
Last but not least: for those who tought I had nearly abandonned my "Site
quebecois de Cosmos 1999"... Cheer up! I've come back from Law Hell for a
little while and should be able to keep it a little more up to date.. And
finally put some new additions, with a little help from my big little
brother and his "snappy" (you know, the thing that enable one to snap images
from VCR). And translate Marcy and Eddie's FAQ at long last!!! (not a
moment too soon, uh?)
See ya (read ya) soon!

I just read the message on the list about a month ago, but I don't
remember who posted it. They said the models should be rereleased in late
fall, and that's all I know. I've checked with the biggest hobby shop in
Pittsburgh, and one of the clerks said that he's heard the same rumor. He
also said that it's a good possibility, since Monogram is rereleasing the
Battlestar Galactica series again, and several other companies such as
Revell and Monogram have been rereleasing old kits from the 50's, 60's and
70's. So keep watching the list for further details.

Hey Chris and all,
I should say here, that just like almost everyone else who plays
Higgins, Tony Anholt cannot sing. I mean he's not a singer-though he
made a good try of it (Stayed on pitch and stuff). His straight acting
though was really good. We were all sorry to see him leave the tour
after 2 months.
As far as what he was like, generally speaking, the orcherstra and
cast of shows (more so of the leads) tend not to interact that much.
The one time I actually got up the nerve to to talk to him, was at the
openning night party and I was pretty tipsy, but I remember him being
very nice.
I think I must also have had a pretty good crush on him. At the first
rehearsal I kept looking at him wondering why he should look famialr.
It took me about a week (till I saw his bio) to figure it out.
Ok, enough true confessions for now.

I read "idiots" to be people like Nick@masterpiece ("Cat"), "Shoebox" or

Please don't flame the list with accusations of being "Neo-Nazi fascist."
I cannot address what some individuals may have sent to you *privately*,
but publicly on the list, I have seen a mixture of genuinely interested
curiosity mixed, often in the same notes, with healthy but polite
skepticism, IMO.
What I mean is that while all of us would *love* to find new S19 material,
we simply have not heard of an animated S19 series before. Despite many
people's having actively searched for S19 material since 1975, and despite
our list's having members from around the world, yours were the first we
heard of an animated S19 series, or even supplements to the Technical
Notebook that list this series; so while curious and interested, we are
skeptical at the same time.
People publicly admitted that they may have missed this, and asked for more
information. There was at least one person, if not more, who asked if they
could get copies of the animated series and/or the relevant pages of the
Tech Notebook; and asked not in a rude or threatening manner, but in
genuinely wanting new S19 material to complete their collections. This
would make people quite happy, and would indeed wipe out all of the
skepticism--honest or otherwise. Lacking that, skepticism will naturally
increase to the point people decide it's a hoax, and will probably say as
much.
If you were flamed in *private*, then that is between whoever sent such
notes. There is nothing the rest of us can do about those matters, and
there is no reason to turn around flame the whole list of 250+ people, when
the vast majority haven't even taken part in the thread on the animated
series in the first place. We take great pride in being a civil mailing
list, and welcoming to new contributers. So it is insulting to have labels
such as "Neo-Nazi fascist" waved around in front of everyone.
Likewise, to everyone, let's not embroil the whole list in discussion over
this incident. While unpleasant, there is no reason to drag it out and
make everyone miserable. If it bothers you, then just turn off your
computer for awhile, as someone else mentioned, or write a note but don't
send it (I find that can have a calming effect), or something calming.
Let's just drop the matter.
I'd rather talk about the merits of Year Two anyway. In fact, I think I'll
go do that now... <G>

I think perhaps that those who spoke so rudely are unrepresentative of

general, more than reasonable.
I don't contribute a whole lot to this list, preferring to sit back and

Subject: Space1999: News Flash ! Model kit's to br re-released
Hi all
Here is the message i posted some time ago.The model kits are now projected
for july release.It also look's like Wadsworth's 1999 score's will be
released on a label very soon.
I have gotten this news from a very reliable source.MPC Fundimensions now
MPC ERTL will be re-releasing 3 of the 4 1999 kits sometime this year.
They are the Eagle the Hawk and Moonbase Alpha, with all new box art.The
Alien Moonbuggy will not be part of this series as the right to it have now
reverted back to George Barris the Car designer who originally designed the
actual car that the kit was based on. for those that have waited so long to
obtain these kit's again it wont be long.
Also for those that are interested Monogram will also be re-releasing the
Battlestar Galactica kits (schedualed for 1'st quarter this year).
(They should be available in March acording to a flyer i received from Star
Tech).
When one hear's news like this i guess dreams really do come true.

Actually, what was said is something like "I can't believe this is
anything but a hoax". It amounts to the same thing.

Believe me, I really looked! No luck, however. :(

Alphans:
For the curious who want an unusual cultural reference to S19, I've posted
a few audio samples of the song I mentioned a few days back. It's a hoot
to hear 'Space Nineteen Ninety Nine' shouted out at the top of someone's
lungs, and to pick out a few teasing references (direct or highly indirect)
references to our favorite series. Go to my website (listed below) and
click on the "Miscellaneous/Odds+Ends" button, and you'll be there (a web
page with more details and download links). BTW, the sound files are in
.WAV format.
Due to the file sizes involved, I can only keep this posted for a short
time, so check it out now!

Your mind refuses to accept that insults, no matter from
whom, or in regards to what, are sometimes part of
social intercourse, hopefully in a fun way. My point was
that noone is perfect, so noone has the right to dictate
what and how to write their e-mail. I simply caught
someone squirming in their own bullshit.
If I feel something sucks, like the second year of 1999,
then I should be able to express that without people
reacting like a bunch of pansies.
We the majority, the lurkers, have to sift through
Coregroup e-mail which can get quite lengthy, but
low and behold we should have a different point of
view or opinion. In a word, the developers of this
1999 list could be a little less pious; a little less
like the Flanders and more like the Simpsons.
RELAX AND HAVE A LITTLE FUN WITH THIS!
Oh, and next time someone trys to tell everyone about
an unusual find, those in the Core shouldn't tell everyone
"it's a hoax" or "you're a "liar"; it may be possible
there is something you don't know. Time will tell if it's
untrue.
Proving that only a good laxative runs smooth, this is
grog@erie.net saying what he wants. If you don't like it,
simply don't read it!
