Subject: Re: Space1999: CD's

From Colin the Eternal Lurker (Sorry!)

Isn't it the case that you could just get a copy of the music - do a good
quality sample to Hard Drive wave files (CD quality sampling) of each track
then simply use a CD writer to produce copies of a Red Book audio CD - I
used to do this for a living for low volume orders for bands etc, and could
do it reasonably cheaply, as I have all the necessary equipment - a CD
would probably cost around £15-20 UKP each.

This would remove the problems with low-volume orders - CD plants don't
like less than around 100 CD's minimum order, and usually want camera-ready
artwork. This also allows pre-writing editing of the files to remove
pre/post track noise/hiss/unwanted stuff. (Technical terms ahoy!)

If someone could get me a DAT transfer of the TDK tape this would be a
reasonably simple operation. I also have reasonably close ties to a small
company who give almost the best mastering prices in the UK for orders of
more than 100 discs (at least they did the last time I used them!) I could
print artwork, but only at Inkjet quality (720*720) but am not even
slightly artistic, so it would have to be done by someone who is.....

Back to deep lurk mode - I'm internet-shy but love reading the contents of
my Space 1999 inbox each night!

Regards,

Colin Mac.

Subject: Re: Space1999: To all Year One Fanatics

>Many of these Year One fanatics don't like Year 2 at all.

Oh Really?

Here is my 5 favorite Year 2 episodes.

1. Immunity Syndrome -- containing one of the best eagle crashes of
 		        both seasons
2. The Metamorph -- Well written story - great footage of the eagles
leaving
the base from the vantage point of the base (possibly
not done in any other episode Y1 or Y2)
3. A B Chrysalis -- "I just wanted to tell you that, you seekers of
perfection."
4. Seance Spectre -- Good story about the long term effects of living on
MBA, and the questioning of the absolute command
		  of commander Koenig
5. The Lambda Factor -- Helena and Tony play Moonbase Columbo

As much as I like the above, I must say that I like it in an entirely
different way
from the manor in which I love season 1. I almost look at it from the
perspective
of a completely different show. The intense acting and characters (often
mistaken
as wooden), the darker mood, and the classical like music that make
season 1
what it was, is all gone in Y2. And when I see things like the monsters
in Rules
of Luton, that look like halloween costumes, surrounded by talking
plants, talking
rocks, or whatever new is talking that episode, I get discouraged. There
must of
been a way to do it better.

>Tony, Ggreg, and the rest

I Tony, was the one to write that email you replied to. I characterized
myself as a
fanatic somewhat in jest, to make the point I did. It is unfair for you
to name anyone
else in this generalization, Ggreg or otherwise.

> What I suggest is that the Year One fanatics focus on their passion
> - being Year One

Sorry, I reserve the same right you do, to be able to talk about anything
concerning Space 1999, and to be able to post my opinions to the list,
and have them count equal to yours.

> but lets not initiate the negativity without a cause.

Who did this, Me? My jokes were light hearted and unoffensive.
Are you not the same person who posted wanting to change seasons
1 and 2 in a similar fashion to Star Wars? Then resorting to name calling
when given replies to the contrary.

I was hoping my post would of been perceived as more positive than this

Take Care

Tony

Hi Brian!

I don't know anything about Windows/DOS being a confirmed Mac person, but I
can tell you this -

the list name space199@buffnet4.buffnet.net

can be shortened to space1999@buffnet.net

with the same result, it will just take a few more minutes to get where it
needs to go. Your mailer should handle the shorter version.

Hope this helps!

Michael Perry writes:

> ...would say that this constitutes a private, (it's yours) individual
>(you speak only for yourself) response (you are replying to a
>former note or thread.), wouldn't you, Robert...?

Yes, Michael, I absolutely agree with you. I am just one person who has
said several times on this list that his opinion carries no more weight than
anyone else's.

I also elected NOT to be an administrator of this list, because I am sick
and tired of this bad behavior from that small percentage of you that ruin
it for so many others--this rudeness, this taken-for-granted attitude, and
this CONTINUED lack of gratitude or even consideration for others who
are doing SO MUCH for you/us WITH NO RETURN WHATSOEVER for
their efforts.

So, that said, and with it clear that I have NO affiliation with this list's
administrators, let me just say that I am SO OVER THIS STUPID
PETTINESS AND CRAP BAD BEHAVIOR FROM SO MANY OF YOU.
Whether you like it or not, someone ELSE has spent CONSIDERABLE time
and effort putting this list together FOR YOU, expecting nothing in return,
and I see such bad behavior, CONSTANT criticism (what's next?), etc.
from people I used to admire that I am just OVER IT at this point.

You get the list you deserve (or actually BETTER than some of you
deserve in this case). You get the list you make. Well, welcome to it.
You can have it. I wouldn't blame Marcy for telling a sizeable number of
you to go to Hell at this point, or for pulling the plug altogether.

Whether you have the decency or basic awareness to realize it or not,
Marcy SELFLESSLY took on the responsibility of this list, paid her own
money to set it up, and did a damned good job of providing a smooth
transition and helping out several people in the process.

Having done that, guess what folks, it's HER list!

You are essentially a GUEST in her home whether you like it or not, and
the way you are treating her is absolutely disgusting and appalling.

You want the list and the responsibilities? Take it. Who cares? Do you
think Marcy did this for the glory or because it needed to be done? There
is NO glory. Start your own damned list, and then you can see firsthand
the WORK that's required. I guarantee you, the experience will humble
you and make you positively ASHAMED of the way you have behaved.
Put up or shut up, and quit your damned underhanded swiping.

I am SO proud of many of you and so ashamed of others, and the bad
has outweighed the good at this point. You can keep this list now
because I want NOTHING to do with it anymore. It stopped being fun,
and I'm sick of it. I would just as soon subscribe to the INTENTIONAL
AGGRAVATION list.

After I send this message I'm unsubscribing because I am SICK TO
DEATH of this crap. This CONSTANT, stirring of the pot. This constant
potshot taking. This isn't the Space: 1999 list anymore. More and more it
is being taken over by a damned, pathetic bunch of ingrates who whine
constantly, are constantly negative, and who are ruining it for everyone,
even though the majority of the people on it are wonderful and mature,
and probably just as appalled as I am.

It has become so CLEAR that even if this blows over there WILL be
something else (ANYTHING else, apparently) right around the corner,
that I'm not sticking around for it.

Keep it.

What percentage of the mail is about the show anymore? I'm sick of the
dam breaking in one place, getting patched, and someone else breaking a
hole in it somewhere else.

>I think that people want their votes known to the general list.

When did I ever say not to have them heard, Michael? When? I simply
suggested that someone offer to collect the data and make the results
known so that the data could be acted on like CIVILIZED PEOPLE in a
reasonable timeframe. You are so damned insensitive, Michael. We just
had a blowup, is now the best time to bring up something else? Grow
up! Think of how Marcy must feel instead of yourself for a change!

What a bunch of disgusting, ungrateful children so many of you have
become.

>I am NOT happy with the new arrangement and by GOD I *do*
>want to talk about it. So, in my book, this *is* an appropriate
> thread, and I would encourage conversation regarding this topic.

Then why don't you start a list with THAT topic so people who ELECT to
subscribe to and who have expressed an interest in it can follow it?
Then maybe you will see what's involved in starting and running a list,
and you can take the heat for doing something for others. Why don't you
just kick Marcy in the stomach while you're at it?

News flash. I don't like this feature either. I'm on the record as having
never liked it. I discussed this with Marcy before this list ever moved, but
I agreed to give it a try. You hate it? Fine. Who said it wouldn't be
changed? Sorry no one can provide instantaneous SERVICE for you.
Marshall, David, and Marcy have lives, and I'm sick of you people implying
that they are running this list with an iron hand when the exact opposite
is true.

>Sorry, Robert. No hard feelings, 'kay?

Oh, hey, none taken. I'm not mad at you, Michael. I'm sick of ALL of this
crap. It is a collective disgust. But you know what? To hell with it. I
never joined this list to have my life eaten up like this or to add
aggravation to it, and I am not proud of this group anymore. Enjoy it. It's
yours. I'm gone.

>>which, ironically, is what keeps happening with the new reply system.
>>even though i'm aware of it, often in the heat of battle to respond
>>and send it off immediately, this keeps happening to me (and others)
>>again and again.

>EXACTLY!!! I ASKED ABOUT THIS FIRST, REMEMBER????

And it happens to me too, Michael, and I want it changed, but the way I'm
going about it is a hell of a lot more mature than you and others are. God,
I just can't believe you people! Why don't you start dealing in reality.
Marcy and the other list administrators OWE YOU NOTHING! If you have
an inclination to do it better GO FOR IT.

How would you feel if you invited someone to dinner, free of charge,
and they criticised the food and told you you were wrong to plan the
menu without consulting each and every guest?

None of you are prisoners here, and much as you seem to thrive in
artificially contrived and apparently purposeful anarchy, the last time I
checked this list was being run democratically. Another news flash.
Democracies don't move as quickly as monarchies. So go build your
own kingdom if you want, or shut the hell up and quit undermining the
efforts of those who are DOING something thanklessly on others'
behalves.

> That was my point when I brought this up for the first time oh so
> many days ago, right when the list opened up. Marcy disagreed
> but she made the changes without asking the List.

Yes, Michael, and she's on the record as saying that if people couldn't
adjust to it or hated it she would change it back! SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO
DO THIS FOR YOU BUT SHE DID! Again, sorry everything can't be done
on YOUR time schedule but we are all humans with other aspects to our
lives.

> something like this should have been left

Wrong! That is opinion formed by hindsight. There's nothing wrong with
trying it a new way. There IS something wrong with being locked into it
if the people you are serving don't want it, and again, NOBODY WAS
EVER LOCKED INTO IT. THEY WERE TRYING IT. THEY ARE OPEN TO
CHANGE. Get off their backs and give them a chance! Yes, make your
opinions or wishes known, but do it with some consideration and couth.

>Marcy likes it this way, so its changed. Will Marcy and the
>rest listen to the List for changes now and in the future???

Well, I won't, because I won't be here. Marcy may, because for some
crazy reason she wanted to do something for the show and for all of
you, and it's just so nice and admirable that so many of you people
continue to thank her with this CONSTANT criticism.

Adios, people.

I'm still open to private conversation off this list, but from this point on I am
OFF THIS LIST. All money still received by me for the list will be
forwarded to Marcy, and I will let Marcy know who contributed what.

Please send any future correspondence to:

            espresso@dnai.com

rather than this (my work address), as I am leaving at 5:30 and not
coming back to the office until next Monday.

Can't say it's been fun. It has been a learning experience though. (I
simply hate what I've discovered.)

Bye,

Robert

Subject: Re: Space1999: Er, what's all this address problem?

Sorry everyone, I *thought* I had pasted Brian's address in the To: field.
I know I copied it since it's still the thing in my clipboard.

>Hi Brian!
>
>I don't know anything about Windows/DOS being a confirmed Mac person, but I
>can tell you this -...

However this is the perfect opportunity to start the rest of the post that
I've been working on. Please note that this post is from me only, and not
from any of the other administrators. Our schedules are very different,
which is good for list coverage, but bad for real time communication.
Please direct any hostility/flames/etc to me in private email. Constructive
discussion of points should be posted to the list.

1. The 'reply to' function being set to the list is a trial. This was made
clear in the very first post of the list on 2/22, which I quote in part
here:

In this list if you hit 'reply' the message will be sent to the list,
instead of the original poster. If you want to send private email to the
poster you will need to edit the To: line after hitting reply. If there is
overwhelming desire to go back to the old way after a trial I will change
it. However, every other list I've belonged to worked this way and I
generally find it less confusing (and therefore assume others may too).

The reason I thoght this would be easier is that every other list I've
belonged to works this way (currently 11, and while most are specialized
low volume lists related to my job, all, including the high volume ones,
are set that reply returns the message to the list). I found the old list
very confusing until I got used to it (which took a few months). We've
given this method an 11 day trial; not long enough in my opinion, but if
enough people feel it is long enough I will change it (a question I was
going to ask after 4-6 weeks).

2. This list is not a dictatorship. David, Marshall and I do not dictate
anything about the list except a few basic rules, which mainly are about
posting nontextuak items to the list. People are free to write to any or
all of us about any perceived problems with the list. I think with 3 of us
there should be someone that anyone could feel comfortable writing to. If
someone disagrees with this please post. Perhaps there is a suggestion for
a 4th that everyone feels comfortable writing to, with the caveat that the
suggested person is willing to do this.

3. There are no rules about list content, except for no Nick/Cat or
funbox/shoebox type displays. For newer list members these are people who
repeatedly rudely flamed the list in a juvenile manner over imagined
slights or unsubscribe problems beyond anyone's control.

4. There seems to be a lot of hostility to us, for what reason I'm unsure.
If you feel there are problems with the list/maintainance please write us
about them. I'm not sure what people imagine we're doing. Administering the
list involves very little that is enjoyable for us. We get all the bounced
emails that the poster to the list used to receive so none of you guys have
to deal with them (we recently got over 100 from one email account because
the person's ISP held the mail for 5 days before bouncing it back). We get
useless administrivia emails for all subscribe/unsubscribe requests. We
have to approve subscription requests from anyone trying to subscribe
anybody but themselves to the list (to avoid the Gwent issue). And lastly
we get flamed for posting our own, unofficial, opinions to the list.

5. Robert Ruiz is *not* a list administrator so you can save any hostility
for only me. He is just someone who feels a need to answer anybody's
questions to help them out, so posts a lot. A lot of people post questions
about 1999 that I know the answer to, but don't bother to reply, waiting
for someone else to pick up the slack. Who usually picks up the slack?
Well, if you count I would guess that most often it is Robert. Instead of
attacking him you should thank him for his contributions.

Marcy

What a second. I did not call anyone any names. I did not call anyone a
loser. I did not use words like crap or shit or neo nazis.

I just wanted about a List-related issue. (How it functions...)

I even wrote down the the flame mode was off. What the heck happened here...?

I feel like you have typed a might hastily...

..and usually you are the bastion of intelligence and prose when responding
to a potential problem. I looked forward to a conversation with you, not a
tirade.

Was I the"straw" that broke your back?

I still enjoy the list, but I *don't* enjoy the stuff like what happened to
the cartoon guy. God I am so tired..

Can'
t we all just get a long....

I'm staying.

It's been a slice people, but this list has gotten idiotic. Y'all can't
be happy with what u've got - what a bunch of children, and some seem to
insist on twisting others words - need I mention the that *lovely*
Neo-Nazi thread?

My sympathies to Marcy, keeper of this list, for the thankless job she's
undertaken. Some of us appreciated the effort and trouble you went to
with this list - others....well y'all know who you are.

Maybe I'll try y'all again in a couple years - maybe by then the age
level will have increased some.

To refer to us as "ungrateful children" exposes a cultish
side to all of this. I don't like cults. It kills the individual
child in all of us. Let's just have fun with this list. Don't
take it too seriously and some happiness is bound to
prosper again. If this list should be dumped, or the group
insulted in general, I don't care. Inform me as to where
the list is moving. If it dies, feel free to talk 1999 at:

Just tried connecting up to #space1999 on Havenet at 19:08 GMT.
No-One there. Not surprising. Your'e all in bed, aren't you?

I just wanted to know if anyone had used these identities on 1999 IRC
chat.

I thought it was appropriate. If anyone else is, then just mail me about
it, and I'll go and put the thinking cap back on!

Subject: Space1999: TRADITION OF SF GOTHIC HORROR

you know, grog, mr lerda, m. perry, tony and the rest who remain, one thing
i've noticed that i'm personally quite fond of is SF of the gothic horror
strain.

i.e. the OUTER LIMITS, DR WHO (first two seasons of tom baker), ALIEN, and
of course DRAGON'S DOMAIN/FORCE OF LIFE/TROUBLED SPIRIT from 1st season S1999.

i'm not a big horror fan as such, but when skillfully combined (see above)
with a good SF plotline, this genre makes for some of the most effective of
tv/movie SF.

the dark, eerie ambience, a sense of fear generated by a combination of
technology and biology in conflict or concert, is really fascinating and
lends itself to some incredible entertainment.

these days the genre is being kept alive by japanese animation, who have
taken the concept in some fascinating directions.

Subject: Space1999: LIGHTED WALL PANELS

you know, one thing i've never read about is how the first season production
created the lighted wall panels effect. i always assumed they had a bank of
flourescent lights behind each panel, but did they use giant muted gels or
different color bulbs or what? it's a really nice effect because no matter
what color they are, you can't tell that there's a bunch of bulbs behind
them. they just glow. it seems it would be a real pain to have to remove
each panel and change all the gels/bulbs everytime they had apower failure
scene or the director just wanted a different mood.

but i'm glad they did, because it was very effective and mood invoking.
