I guess one way you could explain Shermeen's youthfulness is that she may
have been a high school exchange student or on a school work-study program
on Alpha. Space travel probably would have been more accessible to
students in the year 1999, as civilians have more access now in being
astronauts in the NASA space program, than, let's say twenty years ago.
Remember, the show was created in the 70's and they were looking *towards*
the future of what may exist in the year 1999. With that in mind, I think
having students work or study in space, particularly in a stable
environment such as moonbase Alpha [ before Breakaway, of course :) ],
would be perfectly feasible.
TTFN folks :)

This is where you can all laugh at me for not having seen the show since
it originally aired (I'm not kidding. Like "The Starlost", I have it
only in my memory). I know you can all name the episode, the guy's
name, and all other details, but let me tell you anyway.
This is what I remember:
The episode started with a guy getting baked by a big blue light. He
started getting cold all the time, turning up the heat over his wife's
objections. He began acting wierd, and accidentally froze his buddy
(and his buddy's cup of coffee) by touching him in an argument.
Anyway, eventually he started sucking up all the energy around him. The
coolest scene I've ever seen on 1999 was the sight of this guy
staggering down the hallway, making those nifty lighted walls go out as
he passed. To a nine-year old, it was truly chilling.
Anyway, I remember that the guy ended up going for the reactor. They
cooked him with their lasers to stop him, but aside from making him
crispy and lighting up his eyes, they didn't stpo him - he just walked
into the reactor and kaboom.
Who can tell me:
What's the episode called...
Do I recall the story right...
And what was the origin of that wierd blue light?
Sorry, I know this is an easy one for most of you, but hey, show off
your knowledge!
Sweet-tempered (and curiously nostalgic) Mike

No, actually this is our list and not mine. I will not dictate
content/membership. There are several of you that behave like total oafs
and would not be let into my home. There is one of you who has the honor of
being the first 1999 list member ever to be included in my filters so that
I will never again see email from you. In fact you have the honor of being
the first person ever, aside from spammers/spam domains.
This is all I have to say on this issue. We can try and get back to talking
about 1999 though I don't think this list will ever be the same.
I do want to thank the many wonderful people I've met over the past year.
The reason I was willing to administrate this list was for you. So here are
the people I want to thank:
Nick Sayer - for starting the list and letting me meet all these great people
Marshall Poindexter & David Welle - for volunteering to help with the
joyless work of administering this list
Phill Wright - for his encouragement and trememdous contribution to the
Cyber Museum
Roberto Baldassari - for all his help with the Cyber Museum
Robert Ruiz - for all his help in ways to numerous to mention, and for
being the only person to write me a positive word about the CM when it was
first started
Johnny Byrne - for continuing support of 1999 and its fans so many years
after the show has been off the air
Ellen Lindow - for her list contributions and wonderful fan fiction
Jeanette Quimby - for her list contributions, we certainly are missing her now
Philippa Sidle - more wonderful fan fiction
Eddie Lotter - for all his work on the archive and the FAQ
John Boomershine - for list posts that always made me laugh
George Lee - for the Online Alpha Profile List
Claudia Coles - for thoughtful list posts
Pat Sokol - for thoughtful list posts and all her work with Marshall on the
revised FAQ
Daphne Vezina - for thoughtful list posts and legal advice
John Fleming - for all the Moonbase items and his Cold North Site for
people to post all the things I was too slow to deal with
Mike Prendergast - for trusting me with his valued 1999 photos so they
could be seen by everybody at the CM
Ermes Ventisetti - for thoughtful list posts and a voice of faith
Mark Eidemiller - more thoughtful list posts and faith
Pat Embury - more thoughtful list posts and also trusting me with her 1999
items for the CM
Terry Bowers - for contributions to 1999 fandom beyond what most of us will
ever do
Chris Potter - for organizing the round the world trip of The Making of
Space: 1999 giving many the chance to see it who never would have
otherwise, and for his contributions to the CM
Zoltan Motyan - for thoughtful list posts and answering my numerous
questions about Hungary (where my family is from) for me
Allen Retodo - for sharing his model project with all of us
Ryan Case - for all the sounds he digitized for the CM
Maurizio Majelli - for his wonderful work on HDR, even if it is a PC-only game
Any lurkers/posters from the past I may have forgotten for making 1999 on
the net so enjoyable until now.
Gosh there's a lot of great people involved here. I don't know how the
current situation came about. It seems we've let a bunch of ill-mannered
oafs change the whole character of this list, despite having such a great
bunch of folks.

Hey Claudia,
I thought you gave a nice explaination, but I still have some trouble
with the idea of having teens in space.. Here's a place that's both a
military installation and a major research area, it doens't make sence
to me that they'd have students, (even very intelligent ones) hanging
out there. Also, I don't remembern Shermeen looking all that young,
it's been a while since I've seen this one.(But mayby that's just
cause I'm getting older and I just assume everyone is my age)

I agree lets get back to having fun and share information on space
1999. Ive been on the list four months and have gotten a wealth of info,
And i almost own every episode of space 1999 because of the list.
This is a hobby, This is thearapy and escape from the stress of work or

I regret it was my post that started the latest round in the civil

I have agreed to keeping the vote tally and have received quite a few

I too appreciate the folks who have taken on the job of over seeing

Help. I'm having a brain fart here. One of the three brain cells that
survived the beer drinking days of my mispent youth registered a positive
contact on the phrase "Marie Celeste." Wasn't that an old wooden sailing
vessel found abandoned? I can't remember anything else. Can anyone fill
in the details? Since I have OCD I will not be able to sleep until this
mystery is solved. :-) Thanks.

Claudia, Ina, et al,
The thing I always wondered about was how were they measuring time on
Alpha? When Helena says "1702 days after leaving Earth orbit" is this
based on lunar (only) time? Remember in "Earthbound" when Simmons thinks
he is approaching Earth and looks at his commlock is says "Lunar Time
21:15" (or something like that -- there's a trivia question!)? Or is
the time given an estimated elapsed time on Earth? Obviously since the
moon is moving at intersteller velocities, time is all discombobulated
according to the laws of physics (as we currently understand them).
The moon's speed has always been one thing that bothered me even though
it "fell through" four space warps ("The Black Sun", "Another Time,
Another Place", "The Metamorph", and "Space Warp"). Can anyone out there
come up with a plausible explanation that will help maintain the willing
suspension of disbelief and make the shows conform with the laws of
nature (or at least not bend them too badly)?
There is also a big boo-boo in the continuity between Y1 and Y2 with
respect to the time logs. In "Dragon's Domain", Helena says it has been
877 days since the big kaboom yet in "The Metamorph" she says it was 342
days since LEO. I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I'ld just
like to hear an explanation. I know the Alpha Tech Notebook had a
doubletalk explanation but does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks.

Such negativism! I've always known Robert (in the year I've been on the
list)
to be so generous, level-headed and thought-out, that it's hard for me to
believe this post actually came from his keyboard. Took his website down
and turned to name-calling. Everything okay at home, Robert? <g>
Perhaps a leave of absence IS in order, but honestly, I hope he rethinks
his decision. He's a wonderful contributor and a damn fine human being.
I'll miss him.

The episode was Force of Life. You recalled the episode correctly (I would
LOVE to see it again). The origin of the blue light was never revealed.

Is there any place in the US that sales the entire series on video?

Floyd, and All....
I think you can special order most of them ITC Home video / J2
Communications, however if you can get all of them, figure on
spending far more you may need to.
Your best bet is to go through some list member who offers to
copy the episodes for you from Laser Disk. The quality will actually
surpass the purchased tapes.
In case no one posts offering to do this for you, you can contact:
**** The following is taken from Robert Ruiz's Sources List
Posted last year some time *****************
VHS COPIES OF EPISODES
For $8 per VHS tape plus shipping costs Gordon Moriguchi will copy
either two episodes of Space: 1999 at SP or six episodes at EP. A
full season at SP costs only $96 (Season 1 [24 episodes]) or $88
(Season 2 [22 episodes]) plus shipping costs. These are UNCUT,
laserdisc-to-VHS copies, and all episodes are available except the
Season 2 two-part episode "The Bringers of Wonder." To contact Gordon
about obtaining tapes, e-mail him at:
gordon.moriguchi@sow16.hurlburt.af.mil
Michael Perry also does tapes (laserdisc-to-VHS-to-VHS [second
generation] copies) for bargain basement prices and can be reached
at:
ay514@yfn2.ysu.edu
Thanks Gordon and Michael for helping out the fans!
