I just remembered I have an old Space:1999 issue of Starlog with a synopsis of
all the episodes. I think it's in my bathroom drawer (my bathroom doubles as
a "cybrary" at times!). If I find it, I'll see if I can either offer copies
for a SASE or scan it (trying to get a scanner and making a web page).

You are correct. It was called "Gerry Anderson's Space Report" and the
format varied from month to month. Some months Gerry reported on his
ongoing projects, other months information was provided about previous
series, while other months the format was question and answer. In one of
the columns a "split blueprint" for the Mark IX Hawk was presented. The
text which accompanied the blueprint stated that the Hawk was built as a
follow-on to the SHADO interceptors. Then the UFO attacks mysteriously
stopped coming so the Hawks were broken up and their parts used in other
spacecraft. Marcy's 1999 homepage has the title of the Starlog article.

Brian Blessed also had a memorable role in the British movie "Excalibur"
(along with a very theatrical-sounding Patrick Stewart), and played the
emperor Augustus in Masterpiece Theatre's "I, Claudius", one of my favorite
soap operas (along with Deep Space Nine, that is!).

Well I just watched the above, and it certainly had me laughing in spots.
The whole experience was quite odd. The theme music reminded me of Blake's
7 music for some reason though it really wasn't that similar. The acting
was rather cheesy in places and the narration was hysterical. Space:
1999ish effects abounded but it just didn't work as well. Several times I
recognized effects that I had seen in 1999 episodes as well as 1999 'beeps'.

Weird seeing Brian Blessed in a straight role! I've only ever seen him in
over-the-top stuff, like Mentor in 1999 and King Richard in Black Adder.

The whole setup was a bit on the impractical side. A couple and their son
along with single Dad and his daughter. I hope those kids are compatible,
because they don't have much other choice for partners. Too bad the boy
seems like a prat and the girl is a tad (well ok a lot) on the wimpy side.
And there's Nick Tate's poor character, the single dad. Not much hope for
him since the only females around are his daughter and a married woman.
You'd think a group of people who could be marooned who-knows-where for
deity-knows-how-long would've been sent out with a larger gene pool.

Rodney, I think your friend is mistaken. These have been available, at
least in Vancouver, where there is a huge Asian population, for several
years. I used to be in electronics retail and ordered a few for Asian
customers. They are, as you say, about $800 (although I haven't checked
exact models and prices for a couple of years).

The companies I know of that make them are (or were) Panasonic and Akai,
although I'm sure JVC has one by now.

If you want model numbers and such, let me know and I'll do some legwork
here and fill you in.

My mom has been going through a lot of suffering over the last few years.
She's went through diabetes (now controlled), internal shingles, and now it
appears she's got congestive heart failure. They've got her taking water
pills to keep the water in the lungs low. During this, her faith in God
has remained strong, and she's trying to remain optimistic.

I don't know a lot about congestive heart failure, except that it's water
on the lungs that causes the heart to stop, and the condition can go on for
years. Can anybody out there provide some more information for me?

In the meantime, keep her in your thoughts and your prayers. Ditto for my

Hello !

In Europe VCRs which can play both PAL and NTSC are very common. These
VCRs have one drive only, which can play PAL and NTSC. The difference is
in the signal post processing.
These machines produce a PAL-60 Hz videosignal, whereas in Europe the
mainsfrequency (which is important for the picture repeating rate of the
TV-signal [I hope thats the right English terminus]) lays at 50 Hz, but
most of the available TV-Sets are compatible to 60 Hz videosignals (the
headdisc rotates at 1800 rpm at NTSC (25*60) and 1500 rpm at PAL/50
(25*50); in Mexico I think there is a PAL/60 format which uses 1800 rpm
for the headdisc).
There are signal converter available which can convert signals from PAL
to NTSC or SECAM or viceversa. The price begins at about 1000 US$ with
open end. But remember - You need the right format recorder to record
the converted signal.
Most of the VCRs available in Europe can only playback NTSC signal. The
output-signal can't be recorded. But as far as I know there are a some
VCRs available (in USA also) which can also record PAL and/or NTSC
signals.

James, you did name my specifically, as did you name Ggreg specifically,
by starting out the paragraph from where the aforementioned originated
from, addressing us both and others.
(the following taken from your original post)
 >>>Tony, Ggreg, and the rest.

This is not a big deal, but don't ever claim anything you can't
 substantiate.
No one knows what I feel about anything unless the ask, and I tell them.
But in any case, why are you so defensive, and forgetting facts like the
whole point of your post was commenting on one of my posts that you had
taken excerpts from, then addressing myself, "Ggreg, and the rest" in the

first sentence of that post. James, please be reasonable. How could I not
think you were talking about me?

If anyone should be upset here, it is me. You took what I thought was a
positive post, where I was telling everyone never to unsubscribe for
 reasons

 used
it to attack myself, Ggreg, and the rest of us you love Season 1. This is

wrong, and I am not NOT going to get into a flame type arguments with

Who are the people you are CC'ing these messages to? Are you trying to
impress people with your argumentive behavior, and style? I see no
reason to include anyone who does not have to be included in this

In Fact, I almost didn't comment on this at all. The vast majority of
 your post
is ranting and railing against me and others for reasons you are
 installing
yourself, and I can not be held accountable for those. This is not my
 issue
hence, perhaps someone else "is blowing off steam" here. >>

After reading your entire piece, I can only conclude that you are very
confused about who I am, my intentions, and I can see that you may be taking
this a little too personally. Getting paranoid about my CCing - well that
was a friend I told about what you wrote and asked me to send him a "CC". At

Ina, all:

You mean finding the "Space 1999" grunge/whatever song? Actually, someone
practically dropped it in my lap, so to speak. A year ago, a friend had
borrowed the CD (or was it a tape?) from one of her friends, and she knew I
liked S19 (the series), so she brought it to my attention, and lent it to
me. I didn't have much time, but managed to copy the S19 song and a couple
others (didn't like most of the rest of the album anyway). Then my copy
disappeared for awhile, until I finally dug it out again and sampled it.
In this case, it wasn't research so much as simple coincidence.

Speaking of the samples... due to their size and the lack of space, I
cannot keep the samples out on the web for very long, especially the 2Meg
one, so check out the "Miscellaneous/Odds+Ends" section of my website
(address in .SIG below) if you're curious what all the noise (figuratively
and literally :-) is all about. The 2Meg one especially will have to be
removed in a couple days (it's only got a couple small references to S19
anyway). The two smaller clips are great, if you want to hear S19 shouted
at the top of people's lungs.... Anyone willing to put the lyrics and/or
maybe the two smaller sound clips up anywhere else?

If you download any of these in Netscape Navigator 3, beware the
uninformative grey box which gives you no indication of how fast sounds are
downloading--if at all--as Robert mentioned after I first put them up. I
finally saw it in action myself the other day (I now call it the "Grey Box
of Secrecy"), and it's pretty pathetic (not something I'd have expected
from Netscape, which had a nice "thermometer" (?) gauge in the previous two
major versions, including the one I currently use--why *remove* a *highly*
useful feature????).

Again, grab the samples from my website ("Miscellaneous" section) while you
can; unless someone else puts them up, they'll start disappearing as I need
the space.

Greetings to those of you who are left,

Regarding the IRC channel....

I was having one of my all-nighters recently, and at about 0330 I tried
hooking into the ITC via Jon's web site, CompuServe having no IRC
capability (as far as I know). Nobody was there, alas. How about those
of us wanting to try this IRC thing (never done that before) arrange to
log in at a specific time.

This would only work if Jon's IRC page allows more than one access,
methinks?

And to all Europe based Alphans, lurkers or not, where the hell are you
all? I've only seen mails from Avril, Ian, and Eurothug recently
(some who are absent haven't been forgotten). If we all find out who we
are, maybe we could agree to all meet up somewhere?

Come on folks, enough arguing, let's all be excellent to one another.

I can't believe I just said that line... Anyway, the sentiment stands.

Peace & love

Just a suggestion. Once my library card is free of all the stuff on it,

All That Glisters is second bottom on my list, bottom being Brian The

Yes, there were rocks, and one nasty one in particular. But saying
that, you'd be pretty miffed if you'd just had a chunk of you blasted
off by an actor with a terrible Irish accent!

That actor is Patrick Mower, a tv "action man" from the 1970s who is
still acting. I know him from "Callan", where he played an increasingly
unstable agent called James Cross, who eventually allowed himself to be
shot dead by an enemy agent. He's been in plenty of other stuff as
well, I should point out.

Being of Irish descent, I tend to squirm when I see that episode. There
are Irish cowboys, because there is a strong Irish country music scene,
but they aren't like Dave O'Reilly. For those who haven't seen this
story, but have seen any New Avengers, he's like Mike Gambit with a bad
Irish accent, but he's after Maya instead of Purdey.

Peace and love to you all,

Subject: Space1999: OT: Comet Hale-Bopp

Forgive the off topic subject, but as so many of us do have some enjoyment
of astronomy... :-)

Does anyone remember Comet Hyakutake which made such a beautiful showing in
the northern sky last year? If you missed that one, or want to see another
good comet, check out Comet Hale-Bopp. This comet was discovered a year
and a half ago, when it was still pretty distant in the outer solar system,
indicating it was larger than most comets. Now, while still several weeks
from its peak, and lower in the sky than Hyakutake was, Hale-Bopp is
already almost as bright as Hyakutake, and it seems we'll get a good show.

Currently, in the Northern Hemisphere, it is in the pre-dawn sky, and can't
be missed if you look towards the north-east. If you're in a city, it will
appear as a small but bright smudge of light. The further away you get
from city lights, the brighter the comet will be, and the better chance
you'll get to see its tail. Try to get as far out from city lights as you
can, and be sure to make it out before dawn starts (time varies greatly
depending on location). Give your eyes at least 15-20 minutes to fully
adapt to darkness, and don't forget to avert your eyes slightly to one side
to get the full effect.

I've only gotten one chance to look (too many clouds lately), and couldn't
get far enough out of the city before dawn, but I did make out a pretty
decent tail before the dawn light washed out what little I saw through the
not-entirely distant city lights. It may be even better if you get further
out of city lights and a little more before dawn. The fun part, as with
Hyakutake, will be watching it move from day to day against the background
of stars, brightening and peaking in late March, with it's tail pointing a
slightly different direction each day (but always pointing away from the sun!)

Hale-Bopp is already starting to move into the evening sky (Northern
hemisphere) as well, shortly after twilight; and it will be both a pre-dawn
and post-twilight object until early April. It will then be strictly an
evening object through early May, as it moves from southern Cygnus (current
location) through Lacerta, Andromeda, and Perseus. This is northern
hemisphere. I don't think it's visible from the Southern Hemisphere at
this time, but in mid- to late-May, as it moves into Taurus and then
through northern Orion and then Monoceros, it will be visible as a pre-dawn
object again, though not quite as bright, unfortunately.

The last paragraph was based on information gleaned the March 1997 issue of
/Sky & Telescope/. More detailed information, including graphics, is also
located at their website (among many others, I'm certain):

Hmmm, I haven't seen "Callan", but I know Catherine Schell was also in that
movie (I don't know how large her role was, however).

Speaking of her, I just saw her in "On the 3rd Day." Turns out I could
have rented that movie a long time ago, but I was under the wrong
impression of what the movie was about, and kept looking for it under the
Comedy section instead of the Mystery/Suspense. The movie was good (not
great, but good), and had an interesting creepy edge to it, but also
dragged at times. Catherine gave a great performance (of course :-). I
got some JPG snapshots and sound samples from the movie; maybe I'll put a
few up.

Did he later improve his lot, as far as roles went?

Huh. I always figured the "Irish Cowboy" bit was something made up by the
writer--that the character was sort of a lone aficionado of the "Lone Star
State," so to speak.

>but he's after Maya instead [....]

I always thought his various scenes with Maya were the best part of the
episode. I enjoyed those scenes, and there were just enough of them to
save this episode from my Bottom Five of Y2. I did not necessarily mind
the intelligent rock premise itself, but the episode was not executed very
well, IMO.

I actually wrote his character into one small scene in one of my fan
stories ("The Transfer", which is almost ready), but I instead did some
turnabout with the "Irish Cowboy" character.

It's a funny-sounding quote, but what *exactly* is it refering to, I
wonder? Is OLX a reference to one of Windows' OLE (now "ActiveX")
controls? What's a "scrumpy"? I know the "operator halted" bit though,
from the innumerable times a computer would go down and stop me and my
work....

Putting the white light wall panels into a Space 1999 context:

It seems reasonable to believe they not there merely in order
to light the hallway, but as a mood enhancer. Don't doctors
sometimes prescribe white light therapy for people with
seasonal depression? I'd imagine in the enclosed environs
of MBA, a bright light imitating the full spectrum of the sun,
would standard for their mental health.

 Kind and Sweet Mike >>

My multisystem VCR plays in the PAL, NTSC, and MESECAM format. It's a Sharp
and costed me about $400 4 years ago (via the US Navy Exchange) and at the
time it was the cheapest on the market I could find. However, it isn't
usable without a television compatible for playing the approprate format. I
use a multisystem TV (JVC, making it stand to reason that JVC would make such
a VCR as well). However, one should be aware that one cannot simply record
from PAL to NTSC for the same reason one cannot play PAL tapes on an NTSC
player. The mega-hertz frequency is different and requires a conversion
process. And, no, one cannot simply hook the cables up between a PAL and a
NTSC VCR and be able to record from PAL to NTSC (or visa versa), because
without a converter, the frequecies are still incompatible. I get asked that
question alot.
