Alison and Marcy got discussing where the Alphans ended up... >>I'm sure this has been discussed before, but how do the rest of you >>picture the Alphans ending up? I'd be a little disappointed if the journey ever finished. For me, the whole adventure is the journey through unknown space, encountering all sorts of things previously unknown to humanity. I'd see Alpha developing as the journey went on, the base's capacity to sustain life increased, so that beings from other races could join, and Alphans could have children, thus ensuring that Alpha had a future. That's why 1999 will always be a cut above ST:Voyager. They're trying to go home, and exploring just because they have nothing better to do on the way, rather than looking to go further out and explore. Therefore, the crew of Voyager, led by Captain Conehead (sorry folks, but Janeway sounds like Prymaat, Dan Aykroyd's wife in "Coneheads") are motivated by the fact that some day, they will get home, unlike the Alphans, who are looking for a home, which necessitates exploration. Somehow, Alpha strikes me as a better example of being alone in space than Voyager. Hmm... that's got me thinking about a "Who's better" list... Hi Alphans: After taking a break away from the list for the last 10 days I've returned to find my mailbox overflowing with 352 list messages. Scanning through them I've discovered that Robert Ruiz is no longer with us, and John Fleming may be following suit. What's next... I don't know what to think anymore. Around the time of the list move things were looking up and I thought that things were returning to normal. Apparently that was a moment of normalcy creeping into things, only to quickly retreat. I don't know what to think anymore. It's like people are suffering from cabin fever or something. The littlest things are setting people off. I don't know what to think anymore. I'm saddened by all of this. A number of people who I call friends were met on this list. I haven't personaly met them, seen their faces or heard their voices, but I think of them as my friends. I value their friendship and don't want to loose them. We have one thing in common, our interest in a show called Space: 1999. A show that brought us together, is apparently tearing some of you apart. I don't know what to think anymore. Being a member of this list isn't fun anymore, it used to be, but it's not anymore. Those of you that are friends, keep on being friends. Take care of one another. Those of you that are enemies, call a cease fire, try to be civil to one another, and respect each others opinion whether you believe it is right or not. Life is too short. Enjoy the time that you have. Stop making yourself and others miserable. Make a friend not an enemy. Commit a random act of kindness. And with that out of the way, I will now proceed, as my friend Robert was fond of saying "to planet unsubscribe". If anyone chooses to flame me over this please send your reply via PRIVATE e-mail as my unsub message is going out with this and I won't be around to read it on the list. This particular version was part of "Sybil Danning's Adventure Series" Before the actual "movie" came on, there was this extremely tasteless (not to mention suggestive) opening where actress Sybil Danning dressed in a short short mini-skirt gave an overview of the series. After the movie was over she returns to deliver more lame dialogue. It was bad enough they butchered two episodes to make this movie, but to add this tacky (although unintentionally hillarious) opening was pretty ridiculous. Does anyone know the story behind this? My inbox overfloweth and my email system has not recovered yet, so I hope this message gets out. Some thoughts on recent topics: Teens: An old fanfic story had a resonable explanation for having some young people on Alpha. They were winners in a world wide science fair competition where the top prize was a trip to Alpha to view their research facilities. Trip took place on Labor Day weekend, and like Victor, they got caught and were not allowed to return home because of the "virus infection". I always really liked this explanation. 'Specially since my kids are always involved with the science fair. Kevin recently won 3rd place in his division at his school (brag, brag) and I was one of the judges at my own school. This also bears some similarity to my favorite Heinlein juvenile book "Have Space Suit Will Travel" where the main character enters a contest to win a trip to the moon. 'Zines: I just got a message from Terry Bowers regarding her 'zine. I also inadvertantly zapped the messages I received from people interested in her zine. Terry has been in LA seeing Barbara Bain's new play which she said was a comedy and really good. If you are interested in ordering the 'zine "Encounters" please send a check for $16.00 US to Terry at 603 N. Clark St. River Falls, WI 54022-1404. $18 for overseas delivery. She will email me when she receives the check and I'll mail it from here. Any questions email me off list. Beer: I'm currently working on a fan fic novel that I've titled "Coming Home" considering the threads about what has happened to our friends on the list, I think some of you may be interested. There are 4 parts to the story, and I've finished (but not typed) part one. I'll let you know when it's ready for an audience. About the beer-- I don't drink, so know nothing about types of beer or tastes, etc. So I need some help with a particular scene. If you sent Alan Carter and Dave Riley back to present day Earth, what kind of beer would they return with? You can email me privately and I'll compile a list which I'll share with everyone. Please give me your reasons for the beer you choose and include details such as cans or bottles, what color the bottle is, how does the beer taste (my own description for all would be "yuck", but my own perceptions will not be used in the story), where is it made/bottled what kind of label does it have etc. thanks for your help. gotta get to work. Attention Alphans- Red Alert, all Online Alphans! PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE IN ITS ENTIRETY AS IT CONTAINS VITAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THIS LIST!!! It has come to the attention of the list administrators that a growing and large number of list members have been afraid to post to the list because of the insensitive and inappropriate comments recently made be a few vocal list members. Here is an outpouring of private e-mail received by us from several numerous list members showing that while many of us hear from a vocal minority who often post to the list, there is a much bigger silent majority that are *not* being served by this list. (Note that all headers and identifying parts of the emails have been removed as no one was asked permission to use their emails. Some of these are from Robert who wishes to assure everyone that all this was done at his end; no one else knows who sent them to him.) ________________________________ I still hope this list will grow up again, and I'll continue to hang around, but, to borrow Marcy's phrasing, I think *my* joy's been taken out of the list for awhile now. ________________________________ One can not ignore that even though this situation has been explained in several different ways, by many different people, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of hatred on the list. ________________________________ The list and the complaints have become unrealistic. It's fanaticism at this point. I can see a second list coming out of this civil uprising, and it may be for the best. Get people apart and let them try their own solutions for all the problems. ________________________________ The reason I enjoyed fandom so much was because the people were so great. I just don't know what's happened to this list. People used to be so friendly and thoughtful, and now they are all so hostile and rude. ________________________________ I just got the message you sent to the list. I wanted to take a moment and tell you that I agree with what you have stated. Lately things have gotten so disagreeable that almost every message should be indexed as off topic. I too have been considering wether to leave for a while and come back later to see what has become of what was once the best list on the net. I think for right now I'll stay on and give it another week to see what develops. ________________________________ I must say I DO so enjoy your posts, but hey, I can understand your feelings, there has been so many upsets on this list recently, I have often thought about doing the same thing (to tell you the truth, I am afraid of missing something good, so I don't unsub). I often feel like replying to some of these posts myself, but think it may just feed the fire. ________________________________ I just read the message you sent to the list and I among others on this list are sad to see you go. I'm sick of some of the stupid critisism that goes on on the list. Hell, it's not even "constructive" critisism but destructive critisism. Everyone's got an opinion and it seems time and time again they think their opinion for all it's worth to them is law. I've found it with the various lists that I'm on. Human arrogance I guess. Gee, sometimes I wish I was a Psychon! As you probably know, I've joined the lurkers recently as I did not want to draw flame from my comments. I too unsubbed once unannounced from the list and am thinking about doing it again. I have a great respect for you and Marcy. I believe you two are the pillars of this cyber Alpha. No one has put in as much hours as you two have in building up your respective sites and contributing to this list. ________________________________ It's been a slice people, but this list has gotten idiotic. Y'all can't be happy with what u've got - what a bunch of children, and some seem to insist on twisting others words - need I mention the that *lovely* Neo-Nazi thread? My sympathies to Marcy, keeper of this list, for the thankless job she's undertaken. Some of us appreciated the effort and trouble you went to with this list - others....well y'all know who you are. Maybe I'll try y'all again in a couple years - maybe by then the age level will have increased some. ________________________________ I swore to myself that I would not get involved in yet another list crisis. Until now. Personnaly, I have never deleted so many negative posts since I have first subscribed to the original mailing list two years ago. I am sick and tired of hearing people whining and complaining and calling names. Or worse, misunderstanding one another's motives. I know this is not a Polyanna mailing list, but could we PLEASE be at least civilized and act like the adults we are? ________________________________ Sorry to see you go. I can certainly empathize with you. As I told you once before, I was the president of our homeowners association for 2 years and you talk about a thankless job. Adults behaving like children has also been one of my pet peeves. ________________________________ I think Marcy or one of the other list administrators needs to step in at some point to tell these people to take their disruptive little argument off the list and E-mail directly to the other pinheads participating in the brouhaha. ________________________________ I understand why you left the list, but I just wanted to let you know you'll be missed. I myself have been thinking of leaving for similar reasons.. ________________________________ Since the new list started up this seems to have become an email version of 1-800-wah-wahh. The reason I joined this list was finding others who liked this series as much as I did. I feel somedays I'm enduring my wife's PMS on an every other day basis. What has happened? I'm guilty of lurking and saying thanks to all who showed me courtesy. I'll give this list maybe another week (Marcy probably is saying this as well) and I may drop it. It's always the few bad ones who won't leave that make the good ones go. ________________________________ It's unfortunate, but the anonymity of the WWW seems to allow people the freedom to say mean stuff that they otherwise wouldn't. I've followed several newsgroups and things of that nature, and there are always a few asses who think that this is the forum to unload a bunch of emotional baggage or to dump on someone they think is inferior to make themselves look big. ________________________________ I just wanted to let you know that I was briefly encouraged by the direction of the list after its move, but I'm afraid its returned to the same crap as before. Of those 178 e-mails, a huge percentage of them had nothing to do with 1999. It just seemed pointless to open most of them - so I didn't. Anyway, I hate to see you off the list, although I'm probably going to unsubscribe myself. And just after contributing $10.00 do see that it continues. Damn! Oh well, I still want to see the list continue, even if its becoming more of a hassle to sift through sewage to get to the few remaining messages of substance. ________________________________ I am kinda a lurker on the list. I am sorry to see you go..I am hoping after a while you will come back to the list. When i first Join, I dared disagree with a member and was torn apart, you were the one to come to my defense..and you never jump at me for my newness and newbie questions. Thanx I hope you will come back. ________________________________ The purpose of my writing you is just to let you know how much I appreciate all that you do for the list and for S-1999 in general. With a career such as yours I have know idea how you mange to find time to open your E-mail much less maintain the list and correspond with every one the way you do and I haven't even mentioned the cyber museum. I have ben known to trash some of my mail before it has ben opened, but your posts are always the first read... ...So once again Thank You for all your hard work. I know that sometimes it may seam that you are not appreciated, but if you should ever leave I can guarantee you would shirley be missed!!! ________________________________ Just a line to remind you that there are still many of us who appreciate the wonderful effort you put in. I'd like to think I would be able to handle all the hassle, but I'm not so sure I could. I really enjoy the list, and I can't understand why people get so het up. It's not hard for me to visualise a real person at the other end of an email, so I can't understand how people can type rubbish to people as if they arn't human - it's really so sad. ________________________________ This guy is starting to make one of my hobbies very very miserable. I'm sure I'm not the only one....it was well out of order. I've tried to keep a smile on my face, and to stay neutral, but I can do so no more. This guy could well be the death of the list as we know it. ________________________________ Being a member of this list isn't fun anymore, it used to be, but it's not anymore...Life is too short. Enjoy the time that you have. Stop making yourself and others miserable. Make a friend not an enemy. Commit a random act of kindness. And with that out of the way, I will now proceed, as my friend Robert was fond of saying "to planet unsubscribe"... ________________________________ For the majority of list members, subscribing to this list is free (apart for paying for Internet access). The only thing we as administrators ask in return is that you read, understand, and obey the above rules and others listed in the Frequently Asked Questions list, the full text of which is posted at http://space1999.net/FAQ.txt Here is the most important part which is being continually violated: - - No flames will be tolerated on the list. This list has always prided itself on the civility of its subscribers. *Please refrain* from harrassment or gratuitous profanity in *either public OR private* responses to list members. Members should feel free to debate and to disagree, but they must treat one another with courtesy and respect for each other's opinions. Namecalling of any sort will not be tolerated. It is unfortunate to have to unsubscribe or ban someone from the list due to intolerable behavior, however, this has been done on a few occasions. If you're unable to view the file at the above World Wide Web address, it's your responsibility to e-mail Marshall (mpoindexter@classtrain.com) and request a copy of the FAQ to be e-mailed to you. WE REPEAT, if *ANY* of the behavior mentioned above continues in any way, either on list or off list, we will begin moderating the list, so consider yourself warned. We have heard enough from the vocal minority who continually say they are speaking for the list. These letters show they are *not* speaking for the list; the silent majority needs to be spoken for. Letters have been sent privately to the worst of the abusers; if they don't comply with the simple rules in the FAQ they will be unsubscribed. While all this may sound harsh, we want everyone who has subscribed to this list to feel comfortable participating. In the end, we believe that Online Moonbase Alpha will be a better place. Hi Marcy and everyone! Just wanted to step forward and say while I don't post often I do not hesitate to post because of the latest email crisis we've been seeing here. Also I feel bad that many people I get along with well on the list have been flamed or (if thats too strong a term) harrassed off and on the list I for one have not been harrassed yet. Perhaps it is the infrequency of my posting or the fact that I try to avoid responding to confrontational meesages (And messages that may be perceived as confrontational) at all times. I don't always succeed at staying out of troubles way but have avoided the type off posts that have prompted some members to unsubscribe lately. Perhaps all of this can be left alone for awhile. How important is it to be right or to change someone elses mind? An email list is such a peaceful form of communication, there are hardly any problems here to warrent any negatism. Lets concentrate on the positives here and forget the negatives. As always all flames in my direction will be cheerfully ignored. : -) Phil M captphil@unix.asb.com Currently reading: Star Trek Phase II by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens (Okay, Star Trek is a guilty pleasure, don't tell anyone shhhhhh!) |----------------------------------|--------------------------------| |Unity Intergroup of Suffolk County| Unity Intergroup | | Long Island, New York | "A shining beacon of hope, | | PO Box 1134 | all alone in the night" | | Sound Beach, NY 11789 |<*> <*>| |----------------------------------|--------------------------------| |Sending me mail?
