Subject: Space1999: Eagle Flight Characteristics
Actually, in the last eagle flight discussion we came to the consensus
that since the ships are equipped with anti-gravity shields, they may
actually be flying without having to compensate for the lunar pull.
Only the reaction control thrusters would be used for maneuvers and
keeping planar to the surface.
So a liftoff sequence would probably be started by turning on the
shields to reduce or eliminate the local gravity effect, then the VTOL
thrusters get the mass off the ground, and the main propulsion units
accelerate the ship.
The VTOL's must be pretty weak by themselves (i.e. without anti-gravity
assist) since Alan had a pretty hard time getting the ship lifted out of
a snow drift on Ultima Thule. Of course, it *was* alien snow... :)

PP:Beautifully, and well put John. We aren't exactly a closed
community, like Alpha. Those who have been on the list awhile, most in
lurk mode, have learned how to function while in constant contact with
one another. We've learned that to maintain peace is part of the
survival mechanism for any society, if it wants to remain viable. In a
sense, we are a society, and we've learned how to maintain our health
and spirit in the way we communicate. and interact.
Some of our visitors are like people that have been torn away from Earth
and dropped into a situation like Alpha with no warning, no adjustment.
and no way to cope. They don't know the un-written rules, It's no
wonder that some of them don't pop off more often. I know I would be
frustrated in a like situation. It takes a long time to be able to look
at a friend and know what their thinking.
And yes, even oldtimers fill the stack occasionally and have to vent or
risk their emotional sanity and stability. I don't blame them. That's
life! Could you imagine living in a tiny one dimensional existence like
Alpha and never being able to get out to restore your balance?
(shudder,.....goose-bumps,.....cold sweat!!)
I guess what I'm trying to say is, isn't it great that we have the
ability to get up and walk away and vent and renew, like those on Alpha
don't have.
Just some sobering reflection.

I statred to write a post about Space:1999 having swung too far in
the other direction in Y1, but as I write it, I guess not all the
races they encountered were all that bad. The Etherians ("Collision
Course"), although they were using the moon/Alpha to their own ends,
never had a quarrel with the little humans.
I can't come up with just the right term to describe the Caldorians
(Earthbound), with their funky Sta-Puft marshmallow spaceship, who
allowed Simmonds to believe he was headed back to Earth. Can't you
just see Capt. Zantor confronted with the dusty remains of Simonds
if/when they get to Earth? I can just see him with an impassive
shrug and an understated, "Oops," in Christopher Lee's imimitable
baritone.
It's just too bad that none of the races they encountered offered any
help. In Y2, both the Archanons ("Mark of the Archanons") and the
Crotons(?) ("Dorzak") both had superior interstellar travel
capabilities, yet neither offered any assiatance to the Alphans in
exchange for either what they'd endured at the hands of their
respective outcasts, or for the help they received in getting back
the offending parties. It would have been nice if one or they other
had said, "Hey, thanks for your trouble. Here, we#ve got an empty
planet that we#ll take you to." It makes one wonder if these
respective races went back to their homeworlds and told their friends
and colleagues about this bunch of Earthmen that are roaming around
the galaxy looking for a place to live. I'm sure one of you more
creative types can come up with a good joke along these lines.

Hello! My name is Chris Halladay. I joined this list today.
Whenever I join a new list, I like to start with a letter of
introduction.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am a 36 year old single
male who has never been married and has no kids.
Some of my interests are Star Trek, baseball, football
(American), music (Mostly heavy metal. The only types that I refuse
to listen to are rap/hip-hop and opera), science fiction, computers,
sending and receiving email, the Internet, radio communications,
aviation, travel, and going to movies.
I am a very big fan of Barbara Bain. Her character of Dr Russel
was my favorite person on Moonbase Alpha. I also like her character
of Cinnamon on Mission:Impossible.
I am the Communications Officer for a Star Trek fan club here in
the bay area. It is the Shuttle Hakuna Matata. Feel free to contact

Maybe not,
TheEagle has no problem lifting off on the Moon,
right? Logically, the most massive body the Eagle was
every designed to lift off from was the Earth. Now
say, Ultima Thule was at least as dense as the
Earth(must have been close, no funny walking), and
then you add the snow, maybe some ice had formed
around the Eagle from its residual warmth, and boy,
youre probably near the design limits! Done any
shoveling lately? Maybe it was that wet
snow................................... :-)
Then again, look where the engines are located, you
really don't have the room for an interplanetary
motor there.

Actually, I always thought that Simmonds' fate was pretty much what
Zantor had planned. He had referred to Simmonds as 'diseased' and a few
other things, when Simmonds was threatening to kill the entire base if he
didn't get to go. I always thought Zantor just thought, well, the best
thing to do is get him out of here where he can't hurt anybody ever again,
and that'll be it for him....

Subject: Space1999: Flying back to "Online Alpha"...
Hello Alphans:
I'm b-a-c-k-!
After my rapid departure from "Online Alpha" Wednesday evening, I
spent a good portion of yesterday (Thursday) digesting the 352
messages that were in my inbox, some of which had caused my hasty
"Operation Exodus".
Prior to this I had skimmed some messages and speed read others. My
thoughts at that point were either to jump feet first into the ongoing
battle (which I was pretty sure I'd regret) or to unsub and get away
from it all. I choose unsubbing, which I now realize after carefully
reading those messages, was the wrong choice, I should have stayed.
The "good" of "Online Alpha" far outweighs the "bad". This is a really
great group of people [most of the time 8)]. A family if you will, and
like any family things don't always go smoothly. But like your family,
you wouldn't just up and leave them if they were fighting among
themselves, you'd stay and try and work things out.
Anyway, I'm back, I'm going to try and be more active, and it'll take
the Dorcons to take me away from "Online Alpha" again.

Yes the Generation Starship idea has been aroung for years. Not only
Heinlien was using it but also Murray Leinstar in the story Proxima Centauri
(1935...a few years before Heinleins "Orphans of the Sky" fix up novel).
The Leinstar story can be found in a great anthology called Before The
Golden Age edited by Isaac Asimov (Actually ghost edited by Sam Moscowitz)
Its a terrific story in which all the members of the starship encounter life
on Proxima Centauri and they promptly get eaten!
The Heinlein story was origially called Universe and generation ships are
sometimes foundly referred to as "Universe Ships"
As with Wells idea for time travel in the Time Machine a multigenerational
starship is an idea used by many many SF writers even today.
David Gerrold even wrote one for the Star Trek novel series. Not a bad
book, it actually had Kirk stay on the Enterprise cause he was too valuable
to risk on the other ship. (Gerrolds Universe ship was an old L 5 colony
that revolted against earth and attached engines to the station and...took
off only to have the Enterprise find it two hundred years later)
When Ellison pitched the idea that eventually became the Starlost it seemed
new to the producer because nothing like it had been done on tv or film (At
that time 1974) (Later the Alien movies gently used this concept but ignored
the multigeneration concept and used cyrogenic freeze instead)
To tie in with our theme of SPace 1999 this concept has also been used in
stories concerning hollowed out asteriods (Just remembered the Star Trek TOS
episode For the World is Hollow and I have touched the Sky, this is a TV
episode that used this concept, perhaps there are others pre-Starlost?)
The Asteriods are usually powered (Poul Andersons fix up novel called Tales
of the Flying Mountains, I've read this one but forgot about it. I guess
thats an editorial comment! :-) )
and have a set goal rather than a cruise around the galaxy like a ship. (ID
4 also uses the idea for the Aliens except it looks like they travel faster
than light. I can't confirm that from the movie though)
Moonbase alpha and the moon make for the ultimate Multigenerational
Starship. The moon is big...really big and is moving (In the series) really
really fast! There are enough resources on it, with the use of the Alphans
technology to maintain a soceity perhaps indefinatly. This idea is what
Arda (SP?) was referring to in the episode Collision Course.
Imagine Alpha not as we know it now, but three hundred years in the future.
Would the original Alphans decendants become barbarians? WOuld they have
advanced to build they're own Starships leaving Alpha behind forever?
Perhaps some genetic engineering to be more suited to the lower gravity on
the moon? (I always felt the gravity generators were a lame excuse for all
the running and jumping on alpha)
What if the moon went into orbit around some planet that wasn't exactly
habital? Would the Alphans try to terraform it or manipulate themselves to
be able to live on it.
Or would they become content and accept their destiny as the moon travels
past the galaxy into intergalactic space?
This post is too long!
Hope you didn't mind to much.

Off topic I've never watched any Dr, Who episodes, but from all of the

There are several episodes available at the local video outlet. Are there

Subject: Space1999: fan fiction/fanzines
I am tyring to put together a list of space1999 fan fiction(stories
,peoms, songs whatever)I would like to make up a network where we can all
share what we have.
I am an avid zine collector (well over 100 all kinds) and know how hard it
can be to get zines about what you like.I have met several poaple on line who
are willing to copy/trade zines they have(i am also a fan dealer so i am
willing to sell zines if you want at cons, midwest only)If yhave an interest
in blakes'7 star trek, stng forever knight etc let me know ,i will copy
stories i have( like i said i love fan fiction and think everyone should have
the chance to read it)

Correct, Barry Morse played Professor Kittridge, the father of Jake
Cardigan's (Greg Evigan) main squeeze Beth Kittridge (Torri Higginson)
in 1993s Tekwar the first of the telefilms based on William Shatner's
popular Tekwar series of books.

Jason Carter plays Marcus Cole on Babylon 5, but I don't have any idea
if he was in She Wolf of London or not.
