Salute Omnes!

Regarding Nick Tate in Final Mission,

>>What? That was him? I'm a bit miffed that I didn't spot that one!
>>Where's me Trek books? I saw Nick in "Cry Freedom", but that one is
>>totally new to me.

And Ian replied

>Yup! That was him!

>He is listed in the credits, and if you try to look through all the
>makeup, you can see his face. His accent also slips back to "aussie
>mode" now and then. Listen carefully!

It's just twigged which episode we're talking about here. Episodes with
Wesley Crusher in just give me such a pain in my backside that I usually
spend half the episode looking for the Preparation H! I must have
missed it rooting through the medicine cabinet! :-)

I'll keep a cushion handy for my next viewing of that one...

Subject: Space1999: Where did Alpha end up?

Alison and Marcy got discussing where the Alphans ended up...

>>I'm sure this has been discussed before, but how do the rest of you
>>picture the Alphans ending up?

I'd be a little disappointed if the journey ever finished. For me, the
whole adventure is the journey through unknown space, encountering all
sorts of things previously unknown to humanity. I'd see Alpha
developing as the journey went on, the base's capacity to sustain life
increased, so that beings from other races could join, and Alphans could
have children, thus ensuring that Alpha had a future.

That's why 1999 will always be a cut above ST:Voyager. They're trying
to go home, and exploring just because they have nothing better to do on
the way, rather than looking to go further out and explore. Therefore,
the crew of Voyager, led by Captain Conehead (sorry folks, but Janeway
sounds like Prymaat, Dan Aykroyd's wife in "Coneheads") are motivated by
the fact that some day, they will get home, unlike the Alphans, who are
looking for a home, which necessitates exploration.

Somehow, Alpha strikes me as a better example of being alone in space
than Voyager.

Hmm... that's got me thinking about a "Who's better" list...

Koenig v Janeway
Dr Russell v Emergency Medical Holographic Program
Alan Carter v Tom Paris
Paul v Chakotay
Tony v Tuvok
Does that mean it's Maya v Neelix?!?

Thoughts, anyone?

Time for bed,

Subject: Space1999: 1999 vs. 2001 similarities (revisited)

Here is the cumulative list so far (from the three or four times we've
discussed this thread in the past couple of years...)

In general:

Moonbase Clavius very similar visually to Alpha
Eagles very simliar to 2001 lunar transporter
2001 space station very similar to 1999 orbital launch platform
Orange spacesuits, backpack and frontpack almost identical
The 2001 monolith was discovered on the moon in 1999

Particular similarities to Breakaway:

Opening scene starts with Sun-Earth-Moon alignment
2001 space station very similar to 1999 orbital launch platform
Discovery looks a lot like Meta probe
Flight attendant checking on man sitting on the right side of an
    empty passenger compartment
Traveller talks to an Earth person via video-phone en route to moon
Politically motivated story about an infectious outbreak on moonbase
Slavic guy talks to American guy who just arrived from Earth
Lunar excavation site in 2001 looked a lot like nuclear monitoring
    station

Similarities in Black Sun:
people in orange space suits become really aged

Similarities in Guardian of Piri:
Computer kills crew members by shutting down critical life support
    functions

Similarities in The Full Circle:
Primitive human/monkey man gets clunked on head

Similarities in Space Brain:
Guy in orange suit retrieves another guy in orange suit floating in
    space

Even Season II had at least one...

Similarities in All That Glisters (okay, it's stretching it...):
  Rocks influence human behavior

...and the comic book:
Guy in orange space suit out in space without a helmet

Any others?

Hi Everyone;

I was just speakiing with John at Cold North Pub. about the Idea
of an on-line encyclopedia. At some pion depending on the amount of
support it could be as good as the Star Trek Omnipedia. The one I'm
propossing could begin with information from books scripts and so on,
then maybe even include bio's of the online members who are part of the
moonbase, fan produced art aswell.

You could also use the 1999 timeline by Shane Johnson, and even perhaps
the 1999 tech manual (as far as I know, no one is claiming copyright!)
for diagrams of the ships, moonbase diagrams, etc. I think it would be a
great idea!

If I can give any help, then I'd love to. Just ask.

Subject: Space1999: Year 1 Top 5, Bottom 5 and Why

Since we recently had a little discussion about our top 5 favorite and
bottom 5 least favorite episodes from Year 2, I thought I would stir the
pot with my top 5 / bottom 5 for year 1 and why.

TOP 5 SPACE: 1999 YEAR 1 EPISODES:

1. Dragon's Domain - IMHO the best episode of the series. The
flashback sequences are very effective and the Dragon is terrifying.
Cellini's efforts to make himself believed and to seek revenge for his
murdered comrades make this more than just a typical Sci-Fi rubber
monster episode.

2. The Testament of Arkadia - A real "message" episode that had that
extra something about it. We got to see some evidence of the
psychological stress from command that Koenig experienced here, rounding
out the character. The final sequence with Luke and Anna unloading their
Eagle and the moon leaving them behind and Koenig writing in his command
log are Year 1 at its best.

3. Breakaway - The episode that started it all. Roy Dotrice is
excellent as the smarmy bureaucrat more concerned with his pet project
than stopping disaster. A good intro to all of the main characters and
the series format.

4. The Infernal Machine - Space: 1999's version of "The Ultimate
Computer" is head and shoulders above the competition. Leo McKern is
fantastic as both the aged Companion trying to save the Alphans and his
meglomaniacal alter-ego. Gwent's final moments are very touching.

5. The Last Sunset - A tale of Paradise Lost. More in-depth
explorations of the characters than usual (especially the supporting
cast). Once again, we see the pressure of command weighing on Koenig
when he chews Kano's ass about the Eagles going down.

Honorable Mentions

War Games - Lots of action, but ultimately a let down because of the
ending.

Another Time, Another Place - Another "trancendental" episode. The
conversation between future Helena and present Helena is priceless.

THE STINKERS -

1. A Matter of Life and Death - This made no sense whatsoever. Slow
moving. We did get to learn about Helena so that is a plus.

2. The Full Circle - Huh? Everyone runs around in caveman suits. Dumb.
Only redeeming features: Zienna Merton's cavewoman costume and
screaming. Man, she's got some lungs!

3. Ring Around the Moon - Dull, dull, dull. Nice FX for the Tritonians.
 Not much else.

4. The Troubled Spirit - I know this is a favorite of a lot of folks,
but it didn't do much for me. I could see the ending a mile off. Nice
makeup, though.

5. Space Brain - Not a total turkey. Just a "ho-hum" episode.

Again, these are just my opinions. Feel free to disagree. That's what
the list is here for.

What I couldn't figure out about Full Circle, was when they returned through
the mist, there must have been a changing room somewhere in the middle of
mist so they could put there uniforms on!! Better Yet, have them re-appear
with their year two jackets - that would explain how they got them.
Inconsistency - Yes, but it was still a fun episode - one of the few in year
one that was shot on location.

In the Space:1999 Documentary, Bob Kellett, the director states that some of
the cast members refused to go on location. He wouldn't name names, but I
would guess Prentis Hancock.

I agree. This has always been one of my favorite episodes, but the one thing
that always bothered me about it was that they didn't colonize Arcadia. Sure
the soil would take time to rejuvinate, but the alphans have nothing but
time. What I mean is if they can all survive on a rock with the resources of
alpha, then what's to say they couldn't bring all those resources to Arcadia
and use those resources until Arcadia could provide?

Cool email address Brian.

Precautions: I think Marcy mentioned once that there would likely be some
kind of screening for duty on Alpha and most STD's would be fairly easily
contained. Of course, no one had ever heard of AIDS when 1999 was
produced so they could not have even dreamed of "safe sex". Perhaps, with
their alternate history, the war and all, that particular virus never came
into being in their universe. Believe me, when I took a Human Sexuality
course for my psych degree in 1977 there was no mention of anything as
deadly as that. Free sex was pretty much at its height. The rest of the
STD's are extremely easy to cure with antibiotic treatments, so I doubt
there's any market for condoms on Alpha.

Prevention: No offense meant to any easily offended males, but there's
_no way_ I'd ever trust a male to be responsible for the contraceptive.
Flame me if you must, but it's my body that goes through a complete -- and
uncomfortable (mo matter what anyone says to the contary) -- change from
weight, to eating habits, to body chemistry, mood swings, physical
complications such as diabetes, swollen body parts, etc. I expect there
would be a variety of options for the women, such as monthly injections,
long term implants, IUD's (one of the oldest methods and completely
manufacturable on Alpha.), and even pills, creams, diaphragms and even
morning after pills. All these choices would be necessary because women's
bodies do differ, and some of the side effects for some of these methods
would be worse for some women than for others.

Some fanzine stories have speculated reversible tubal ligation, but I'd be
concerned at how easy they could be reversed. Terry Bowers used this very
effectively in "Paradise". I also can't see Koenig being able to insist
on some kind of operation for all women on Alpha. I don't think the women
would accept, nor do I think the medical staff would cooperate. I
personally favor a long term implant, and have suggested that method in
one of my stories.

To my knowledge, the only reference to birth control in the series was in
the Y2 episode "the Exiles" where Koenig tells the aliens that they can't
have children and tells Helena to explain. Helena's explanation is simply
a lame repitition of what Koenig just said-- that their life support won't
allow any additional people. That scene has always bothered me. Since
she doesn't add any additional information as CMO, I've wondered if this
were merely a "control thing" on Koenig's part, making sure she still knew
and was adhereing to the "official doctrine" of no children. I've long
suspected (and other fan writers such as Terry Bowers and Becky
Eisenhuth and Phillipa Sidle, have too) that Koenig and Russell had
private if not public disagreements about this policy, perhaps for a
variety of personal and public reasons.

ONE DAY IN PEACE, JANUARY 1, 2000.

This is a 24-hour concept where no guns are fired anywhere on earth...
including on television. What if, for 24 hours, whosoever happens to be
at war on December 31st, 1999, agrees that for one whole day no guns
would be fired? The silence would be golden.

And what if the television programmers of the world agreed to not air
any programming with a violent content? (It would probably be easier to
get warring nations to stop firing than it would be to get the world's
television programmers to not air violent programming.)

At present, this ONE DAY IN PEACE concept it beginning to get further
circulation. On April 6, 1997, it will be 1000 days until January 1,
2000. Perhaps for one day, New Year's Day 2000, there will truly be
peace on earth. Spread the word.

This is a thought-wave campaign. Which is to say, the more people who
grasp this thought, the more it comes into reality...

One Day In Peace, January 1, 2000...pass it on...expect a miracle.

Brian,

I remember Helena's comments in "The Exiles" that "we can't even permit
any new births on Alpha." This suggests that some type of mandatory
contraceptive was being issued. I always wondered about that comment
though. The Alphans had taken losses during their journey to put them
below 300. (I think Helena put the figure at 297 in "The Metamorph").
Obviously with a capacity of 320 Alpha had some room for population
growth. Maybe the reason births were not permitted was that children
would have drained too much manpower resources to replace workeres out
for maternity reasons and put too much of a strain on the medical
facilities.

I always wondered what ever happened to Jackie Crawford? It would have
been kind of neat to see him pop up (as just a little shot, not a major
episode - no Wesley Crushers for Alpha!) every now and again. After all,
the events of year 2 took place over 5 and 1/2 years from start to
finish.

I was watching "Breakaway" the other day and I noticed two bloopers that
caught my eye:
	1) When Eagle 14 is unloading its cargo of nuclear waste, there
is no cargo module in the Eagle superstructure.

	2) When Steiner freaks out and heaves Nordstrom across the
disposal area, the visor on Steiner's space helmet opens.

I also noticed that the actor who played Commander Gorski (Philip Madoc)
also guest-starred in an episode of UFO called "A Question of
Priorities". He played Commander Straker's ex-wife's 2nd husband. I
wouldn't have recognized him if I hadn't noticed his name in the credits.
In the UFO episode he had a beard. I've noticed that Gerry Anderson
tends to use a lot of the same people in each of his productions. With
that in mind, does anyone have any idea why Ed Bishop never turned up on
Alpha in some capacity or other?

Another question: Does anyone know who did the voice of the Year 1
computer? It sounds kind of like Barbara Bain (altered with a
synthesizer). Any ideas out there?

Hi Don,

Damn fine idea. A very damn fine idea.

As good as the Trek Omnipedia?? I don't think so Tim!! BETTER than
anything out. The only way to go.

And better than the Technical Notebook, as this WILL have all the info,
and be updated. Not die as the TN did.

Hi David, Alphans:

According to the booklet included in the "Space: 1999 Documentary"
video tape, the computer's voice was provided by an uncredited Barbara
Kelly.

A welcome voice did speak to the Alphans...

Great to have you back, Boomer. I for one missed your great humour. As
for missing things, I'm sure others will have put you in the picture by
now.

I think it did, because I recall talking with a South African lass at
one of the places I worked at a few years back, and somehow the topic of
chat got onto assorted tv stuff, including Space:1999, and she
recognised the name at once!

Given she had only been in England about 2 years, and it certainly
hadn't run on tv here during that time, methinks it's safe to say it did
run in South Africa.

Saying that, it would have been during the worst days of Apartheid,
wouldn't it? Would it have been edited in some way by the South African
tv companies?

Just a sudden thought, that. Comments anyone?

Honestly, if resources were so scarce I don't think this would be left up
to the individual. You can't count on someone not having that maternal urge
and getting a quickie for a child. I think there'd be forced contraception.
The easiest way, using today's technology would be depo-provera shots,
which are injections given every 3 months to prevent pregnancy. I don't
think they would let women use any method where they could cheat, i.e.
pills, creams, diaphragms. IUD's are fine for people who are done
child-bearing, but are not recommended for women who plan to still have
children, as they can damage the uterine lining.

Well, if you want easily reversible surgery, the Alphans should go for
vasectomies! Vasectomies are simple procedures, requiring only a local
anesthetic, which are easily reversed if they are performed with the
intention of future reversal. Tubal ligation is major surgery, requiring
general anesthesia, which are much more difficult to reverse.

Many sci-fi writers solve this dilemma with some sort of universal
contraceptive in the food supply or long term implants. Neither of these
are practical today. The Norplant was a flop when it was discovered that
they are not quite as easy to remove as they are to place.

Certainly, better the contraceptives of the abortion (terrible crime, in any
case!). Nevertheless, the real problem on Alpha (in my opinion, of course),
is the continuation of the human species and not the birth control!
The probabilities that the Alphans are the last earthmans in the space, are
high. "Another Place, Another Time", teaches.........
