High pressure air lines were inches from the actor's faces
off camera during shooting and turned on when the g-forces
were to be felt, shooting a high powered stream of
invisible air.

Yeah, I liked that one, too.

Another good one is the scene in that UFO episode where the Alien shoots
the window on Moonbase, the window explodes and the guy dies while trying
to make it to the closing airlock door.

Messed me up for a month, wouldn't sleep with the door closed to my

Hi Alphans-

I've been mucking about with the list configurations and finally figured
out the path to where the subscriber list is kept. What this means for you
is that this is now a restricted list, i.e. no one can post to the list
unless they are subscribed. However this may cause some problems for a few
of you whose email accounts differ slightly from what they subscribed with.
Here is an example to explain what I mean--

I'm subscribed as mk@wizard.com which is the email address that appears
when I use Eudora to send mail. However, when I enter the Unix shell and
use Pine to send mail my address appears as mk@snark.wizard.com. Since
mk@snark.wizard.com does not appear on the list of subscribers I can
not post from Pine; all the posts are bounced. If this causes a problem for
any of you we can work it out, editing your entry on the subscriber list by
hand if need be.

I feel very strongly that this is an important thing to have. Not only will
it protect us from the wrath of Gwents, shoeboxes, funboxes, etc, but it is
a major protection from spam. The list was previously spammed numerous
times by Kevin Lipsitz's magazine crap. The new list address has already
appeared on Liszt though I didn't submit it. While Liszt is a wonderful
service for people looking for a list on a certain topic, it is also a
place where spammers can mail their crap to as many people with as little
effort as possible, just by copying all the different list addresses.

I believe they used jets of compressed air. It was something they had
developed for "The Day After Tommorrow" aka "Into Infinity". They saw a
chance to use it on 1999, so they did.

From: Jeanette K Quimby <jquimby@juno.com>
Subject: Space1999: OT: Quimby update

Thanks to all the support and warm messages received. I wanted to
update all on my little one -- Joshua has now been receiving therapy
for one month at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. So far, he has had no
response. His therapy is weekly and his IV infusion takes approximately
6 - 7 hours (imagine holding a squirming 9 month old who does not want to
take a nap and has an IV in the arm - it's a lot of fun). We are going
for another month of this medication and can only hope that at some point
it will have a turning point for the better. The physicians give
conflicting ideas - one states "he will grow out of this, but he has only
seen ONE other case take this long". The other specialist is leaning
toward he won't grow out of this, but he will be okay. Either way, I
know we will be okay. Being at M.D. Anderson really makes me appreciate
the fact that I am still extremely lucky. I hope to forward a picture to
Marcie soon (we are taking pictures this weekend in the bluebonnets here
in Texas) so she can add it to the museum.

Also, congratulations are in order for myself....after six horribly long
months in a position that was extremely insecure with a supervisor (who
is a pediatric dermatologist - she should understand kids) who was not
very understanding of my situation, I have taken another job within the
University in the Department of Oncology/Hematology (kind of ironic
considering we are seeing hematologist at one of the premier cancer
institutes in the nation for Joshua). It will be a promotion to
Executive Assistant with a RAISE!!! I think my current supervisor is a
little upset that I beat her to the punch line by quitting before she
could fire me. Tough luck! Can you tell, I am overjoyed about this
move!

So, for those of you with my office e-mail address - please note, my mail
will be forwarded to me (I have a wonderful LAN manager). I will post my
new work address once I have it. Also, please feel free to e-mail at
home. I am very behind still on my mail, but this address is permanent.

OFF NOTE FOR Ermes and John - I owe you both a note and thanks. All
packages were received. I will write soon.

Many thanks to all who have had my family in their thoughts and prayers.
Your support shows just how much of an extended family we are in this
group. I honestly cannot tell you how much your thoughs and prayers
regarding my son mean to me and my family. I know that no matter what
happens with my son's therapy, I know I can count on this wonderful group
of individuals for a shoulder to lean on when it gets rough. Wish me
well in the new job - I start April 14th. My last day in the dungeon is
April 11, but I already fell a stomach flu coming on <G> so who knows!

Thank you again, and please keep thinking about Joshua for me.

Your fellow alphan,

Subject: Space1999: ADM: Confirm Letter Required, Different posting address solved

Hi Alphans-

Wow, the list has certainly been dead for the past few days. Good time for
an administrative announcement! :)

We've added another step in Gwent protection (though he has seemed to
disappear since we've take away the auto subscribe option). Whenever
someone subscribes an address to the list, the address will receive a
confirm letter which will look like this:

Someone (possibly you) has requested that your email address be added
to or deleted from the mailing list "space1999@buffnet4.buffnet.net".

If you really want this action to be taken, please send the following
commands (exactly as shown) back to "Majordomo@buffnet4.buffnet.net":

        auth f1eefb8e subscribe space1999 mk@snark.wizard.com

If you do not want this action to be taken, simply ignore this message
and the request will be disregarded.

If your mailer will not allow you to send the entire command as a single
line, you may split it using backslashes, like so:

        auth f1eefb8e subscribe space1999 \
        mk@snark.wizard.com

If you have any questions about the policy of the list owner, please
contact "space1999-approval@buffnet4.buffnet.net".

Thanks!

Majordomo@buffnet4.buffnet.net

I've also solved the problem of posting from slightly different email
addresses. I will maintain a separate list of people who can post despite
*not* being subscribed to the list. The address mk@snark.wizard.com
will be on the list so I can post from Pine without being subscribed to the
list twice. If anyone else has similar problems to that, just email me you
subscribed address and the address you would like to be able to post from.

I will be attending the I-Con convention in Stony Brook NY this weekend. If

can hook up at the con!

I will keep an eye out for related books and sets of the Donruss 1999 cards
if anyone is looking for such things.

Also there have been other anderson related toys at this con in the past so
if you have a want list forward it to me before the weekend and I'll have a
look around the dealers room for it.

Let me know the max you want to pay for an item so I don't overspend and get
stuck with something I already have.

Many B5 guests at this years con: JMS, Micheal O'Hare and Harlan Ellison.

And two of my favorite writers, Barry Malzberg and James Morrow will be there.

Tell you all about it on Monday (Or late Saturday night if I'm up to
responding to my mail!)

I'd be interested in another Mailing List shirt, but with a few changes.
I'd like a crisper image of the eagle, perhaps using a Illustrator type
file for the image, rather than a Photoshop type file to avoid all the
shadings seen in photographic images that don't translate well to a
t-shirt. Any graphic artists out there interested? I would also like the
picture to be shorter. I wear my t-shirts tucked into my pants and the old
one loses the bottom of the image and the list address as it is now. These
are only the things I'm looking for...anyone else have any suggestions?

Hi,

I spoke with Jim Meehan (Nichelle's manager) and he says that Nichelle is
tentatively scheduled to appear on "Larry King Live" this evening - Friday,
April 4th. I have received so many emails that I cannot respond to everyone
personally at this time about Nichelle's situation, but wanted to get this
information out to as many folks as possible today in case you were

Subject: Space1999: Hot Eagle Model News !

Hi Guys,

I have today visited Comet Miniatures in London and have received the
following information from Tony James (the Proprietor).

He has commissioned the Japanese modeller Teruo Yamada to make the master
for a NEW Eagle model in 1:144 scale. The model will be cast in high
quality resin, with white metal accessories. Not only will it come with
the usual Transporter Pod, but it will also have the Freighter / Crane Po=
d,
so you can change the look of the model as you wish. The release date ha=
s
been given to me as July 1997 and Tony has promised to telephone me when
the model is available (I've ordered two already). Price is expected to =
be
about =A340 (UKP) plus postage. I spoke to him about potential interest =
in
the U.S. for this model and he said that if someone was willing to take
delivery of a consignment over there for distribution to individual
members, he would be able to give a substantial saving in the postage cos=
ts
for bulk delivery. Any offers anyone ?

Whilst browsing his shop, I also noticed Comet have re-released their res=
in
Stun Gun kit (supposedly cast from an original prop and not bad if you're
prepared to finish it correctly) - =A320 (UKP). They also have the launc=
h
platform kit (with 1:350 white metal & brass Eagle) for =A335 (UKP) (See =
the
Cybrary for my model pics).

Tony has also categorically denied any rumor of the re-issue of the Airfi=
x
/ MPC Space 1999 kits. He is in constant contact with these manufacturer=
s
as he is the primary importer & distribution source for all SF / Fantasy
Kits in Europe. He has actually asked them the question about the re-iss=
ue
on my behalf, and they have denied any plans exist for this at present.

Comet do however have the modified Airfix Eagle kit, cast in resin with
white metal framework (opened up properly) and correct Alpha decals.=20
However, this model still does not correct the inherent problems with the
Airfix / MPC kit (i.e. incorrectly shaped nose, pod, framework etc), but
it's not beyond the realms of possibility for this to be made in to a
decent replica with a bit of work. Price for this is =A345 (UKP) plus
postage.

Comet take all credit cards and will accept fax orders at the following
address:

Comet Miniatures

London
SW11 5RH
United Kingdom

Phone:	+44 (0) 171 228 3702
Fax:	+44 (0) 171 924 1005

I hope this information is of interest to all the modellers out there.

Take Care,
Chris Potter

Hello!

So, has anyone seen B.A.P.S., the movie starring Martin Landau? I think it
was released a week ago, but I haven't seen it, or a review on it, or even
comments on it here on the list. I'd expect a great performance from
Martin, I've always enjoyed Halle Berry's acting; but has anyone actually
seen it? Any good?

I've been stuck at home sick with the flu for the past few days, so I can't
check it out anyway (heck, I wanted to see "The Saint" this weekend too).

Comments on B.A.P.S., please?

Subject: Space1999: Modeling Eagle in the Nov. 1996 FineScale Modeler magazine

Hello, Alphans!

A few weeks ago, I volunteered to check into the possibility of getting the
article on modeling an Eagle from the November 1996 issue of FineScale
Modeler magazine scanned and placed at the Space: 1999 Cyber Museum or
Cybrary. (I work for another magazine at the publishing company that puts
out FineScale Modeler.)

The editor of FineScale Modeler has told me that he does *NOT* want the
article scanned or posted anywhere on the Internet, but the good news is
that there are plenty of back issues available for Space: 1999 modelers and
fans. Here's the information on ordering:

MINIMUM ORDER IS TWO COPIES. Cost is $3.95 per back issue. U.S. orders add
$3 for fourth class mail or $4.50 for UPS and applicable sales tax in WI (5
percent), MI (6 percent), and VA (4.5 percent).

Canadian orders add $5 postage plus 7 percent GST. All other foreign orders
add $10.

Call Kalmbach Publishing Co.'s Customer Sales & Service department to order
back issues at 1-800-533-6644, 24 hours a day. For faster service, call
Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Central time. Please have your credit card
handy. Outside the U.S. and Canada, call 414-796-8776.

You can also send e-mail to customerservice@kalmbach.com

It got a good review from Esther Iverem in the Saturday, March 29 edition
of the Washington Post. Landau's role was described thusly, "...the pair
offer to help a rich, elderly man, Mr. Blakemore (Martin Landau), to be
happy in his final weeks of life." No other comments on Martin's

SpaceCon XII will be held September 13-14 (this Fall) here in Portland,
Oregon at the Days Inn/City Center. The guests to date are BARRY MORSE
(Prof. Bergman), NICK TATE (Alan Carter) and GRACE LEE WHITNEY (Star Trek's
Yeoman Rand).

The weekend features a special performance of Barry Morse's one-man play,
"Merely Players" and ALL PROCEEDS of the play and the con benefit The
Parkinson's Center of Oregon. Barry's wife, Sydney Sturgess, has suffered
from Parkinson's since around 1985 and she is now confined to a nursing home.
The weekend will also feature a special tribute and showing of THE OUTER
LIMITS episode "Controlled Experiment" which starred Grace Lee Whitney and
Barry Morse!

It's going to be a fun weekend, and the latest and most detailed information
on the convention and how to get tickets can be found at:

Subject: Space1999: Third Season Episodes Found!!!

Hi fellows,

Since Boomer published those wonderful lost episodes last year
I've been searching the Internet for further undiscovered Space: 1999
material.
In the last days following a long link-sequence I reached a so far
unknown site and made an astonishing discovery: a Third Season was
planned in the late 70's!!!
I found several episode descriptions. Unfortunately each of them
were cancelled for different reasons, therefore the entire Third
Season had to be cancelled.
What a loss, fellows! The new season would've united the previous two.
Victor, Paul and Kano are not dead, they just founded a commune in
the catacombs of the Moon together with ten women they chose with very
close attention on the physical appearance. They stated the principals
of their future life: "Free love and free siphyllis!".
But in "The Metacorpse", the first episode of the Third Season they
return and, after Dr. Russel cured their several diseases, they are like
before again!
Well, here is the brief description of some really exciting episode of the
planned series.

PAYBOR
In this episode Taybor's youngest son, Paybor the Playboy appears
on the Moon in his toy spaceship to take Maya to Taybor as a birthday gift.
When Koenig refuses his request he begins destroying Alpha by his
toy laser cannons. But during their conversations Paybor slowly realizes
that Commander John Koenig is the most beautiful man he's ever seen.
Under the influence of Koenig's intensive beauty he gets to know the true,
unselfish love and realizes that he must strive to be good and always
must see the positive side of life. He stops destruction and -
in the most moving closing sequence of the entire series - he presents
John Koenig, his forever love with a big flacon Old Spice Sensitive and
the lovely, smiling Maya with a toy jump-drive.
Unfortunately this excellent episode had to be cancelled because of the
obvious homosexual elements.

WHITE SUN
In this thoughtful episode Moon flies through the center of a very hot star.
Fortunately the genius of Professor Bergman works again. He discovers that
linking the gravity towers in a very complex configuration results in the
so-called "gravitational fridge effect", already predicted by Albert Einstein.
Bergman hopes that this effect can compensate the about 30 million Kelvin
heat inside of the star. The moonbase staff retires to the living quarters
preparing for the dangerous journey. They wait in a peaceful, homely
atmosphere. Paul Morrow takes his electric guitar and begins playing his
favorite trash-metal songs. Maya plays her favorite childhood game: transforms
to a chlorin-breathing lifeform and in the very last moment, when she almost
stifled, she retransforms. Alan Carter practices crash-landing in a simulator.
Professor Bergman and Commander Koenig sit in Main Mission and Bergman tells
his exciting adventures with young girls. At last they reach the hot center of
the star. During a breath-taking metaphysical event Bergman and Koenig
experience what's to be a fried chicken like. Finally they get through and
everone is happy.
The episode was cancelled because Gerry Anderson hated fried chicken.

STAR WAR GAMES
An incredibly huge space station approaches Alpha. Governor Parkin,
the commander of the station and Dark Father, the Black Knight Rider want to
test the new infernal weapon systems of the station - on Alpha. In between
an old spiritual master, Obbie Won Cherosin appears on the moonbase and warns
Commander Koenig to the danger. Before he leaves he teaches Tony Verdeschi
how to master the Fork. Having had the new holy knowledge Verdeschi launches
an Eagle to fight the Big Iron Ball. Using his supernatural power he suddenly
discovers a weak point on the station and, by firing a pair of Kroton torpedos,
he destroys it. Before his death Dark Father, the Black Knight Rider confesses
his terrible secret: he is Tony's father and Maya actually is Tony's sister.
This really great and moving episode had to be cancelled because the main
elements of the story were plagiarized by George Lucas in his weak,
unsuccessful space opera trilogy.

META CHILD
Maya gave birth to a boy. Tony suddenly notices that the child remarkably
resembles John Koenig. Following the rule of vendetta he challenges the
commander to a duel to death. Koenig, to save his prestige, accepts the
challenge. At 6:00am Lunar Time they meet in Corridor Four-Six with a
laser gun in hand. In the very last moment before they shoot each other
Dr. Russel comes to stop them because the child has transformed and now
he is similar to Tony rather than to Koenig. They realize that the boy
inherited his mother's ability of the molecular transformation and that was
his first joke. Maya, in tears, ensures Tony that she always was faithful
to him. Tony, in tears, begs the commander's pardon. Koenig, in tears, tells
Tony that he was absolutely right and himself would've done the same.
Dr. Russel, in tears, tells Koenig that she always trusted him. Everyone is
happy.
In my opinion this would've been the top hit episode. It shows how important
to love and trust each other in deep space. Unfortunately Gerry Anderson
refused the episode stating "we make science fiction not romance fiction".
I don't understand what did he mean by this. But at that point some excellent
man left the Space: 1999 crew. Later they were amongst the leader creators
of "Melrose Place".

Subject: Re: Space1999: B.A.P.S. w/Landau

Michael took me to see it last Tuesday night. When we heard the Siskel &
Ebert review (which panned it) he wasn't sure he wanted to go. Their main
problem was the black stereotypes were tasteless. Then we read the ad in
the paper and found out the movie was done by Robert Townsend, a black
director, and we have enjoyed several of his movies. He makes nice,
amusing little movies that can be enjoyed by both blacks and whites. And
that's what this is.

We saw the movie on a Tuesday night in a small town in central Florida.
There were 12 people in the audience. 8 were black 4 were white. (Oddly
enough we sat just front of a black couple who settled their two children
in an adjoining theatre to watch "Cats don't dance", a new animated movie.
We had done the same thing with our two children.) All the people who
were there seemed to be enjoying the jokes.

The characters were stereotypical, but there were stereotyped
"rich-white-people", a "snobbish-english-butler", a "greedy-rich-nephew",
as well as two adorable black girls with ambition and fairly typical
southern black outlooks on life. The girls had 3" long nails, gold teeth,
and hair that changed color and shape on a daily basis. I expect Siskel
and Ebert live in a world where few girls like this exist, but I've had
co-workers who dressed and acted like this, and found nothing particularly
unusual about it.

Now a little about the movie. Two southern black girls from Decatur GA
have ambitions of starting a business together -- a combined beauty parlor
and soul food restaurant. (Oddly enough, I know of one in Tampa, it's
really "in" and trendy right now.) They've been working in dead-end
waitress jobs and have good-for -nothing boyfriends. When they hear about
a contest for a black recording artist who is looking for a girl to dance
in his video, one of them decides to enter. They spend their life savings
going to L.A. to enter. They do not win, but an italian chauffeur asks
them to meet with his boss who wants to hire them to make a music video
for him. He offers them $10K and quarters at his mansion, and they
accept.

He turns out to be the greedy and evil nephew, who doesn't really own the
house. He wants to hire the girls to pretend they are the long lost
grandaughters of his uncle's only true love, a black girl named Lily whom
his Uncle had fallen for 50 years. The uncle's parents had stopped the
affair, separated them, arranged a suitable marriage and sent Lily far
away. Now Uncle is dying and the nephew "wants to make the old guy happy
in his last few weeks by presenting him with Lily's grandchildren". Well,
the old Uncle (Martin Landau) falls for it and falls for the girls, who
are energetic and likable, and silliness ensues, the nephew has it all on
film so he can have the old guy declared incompetent. Fortunately for all
concerned, the uncle is smarter than the nephew and the movie ends
happily.

It reminds me of old Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney movies. It's cute and
silly and fun to laugh with the characters. The girls are awed by the
rich surroundings, and there are cameo appearances by lots of black
recording artists (none of whom I recognized, I sometimes feel I grow
older by the minute) and the girls go typically fannish over them. Both
Halle Berry and the other girl are terrific, and Martin Landau is charming
and patient with them, readily accepting their exuberant behavior and
getting caught up in the excitement.

If you have a free afternoon and want to leave the violent movies behind
(There is some strong language in this, black dialect uses words that are
not always acceptable in other cultures) I would highly recommend it. E
