As I said in my original note, it's strange to think that I'm > still thinking about the show in 1999 - almost as strange as yours > truly having made it this far.. :) I haven't written an awful lot, so it's not something I've ever thought about but when you write an episode or story (say "Testament Of Arkadia" for example), are there any thoughts about the longevity of the story - how it might look in 25 years time? When Space:1999 was being run for the first time, we know that it was the most expensive tv series ever made. Did it occur to anyone involved in the show at the time that it could develop into a "cult" tv series? With a committed fan base some 25 years on? Put an Eagle transporter in front of most folk over 27 years old and they'll most likely recognise it. Not a theory, but a fact based on experience over the last three years of having an Eagle Dinky toy atop my monitor. I'm certain there are going to be some very interesting discussions at the Con in September... can't wait! - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian Dowling - Birmingham, England Online Alphan #144 techlab5@space1999.com / hellion@easynet.co.uk http://fly.to/moonbase_alpha / http://www.hellion.easynet.co.uk - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *********************************************************** Online Alpha - The Space: 1999 Mailing List To unsubscribe: send email to majordomo@buffnet.net and in the body put unsubscribe space1999 (or space1999-digest) *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 23:32:41 +0100 From: Brian Dowling <techlab5@space1999.com> Subject: Re: Space1999: Other shows on SFC Hi folks, Don and Jeff wrote: > >The trouble with running shows like Logan's Run, The Prisoner, Planet Of > >The Apes, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Beyond Westworld, The Gemini Man >and > other shows is that so few were made...not much return for the >investment, > you see. I saw an MST3K of Space Mutiny today, something cobbled together from Battlestar Galactica episodes with Cameron Mitchell in. What has happened to poor Uncle Buck from the High Chapparal? It was dire - even Mike, Crow and Servo struggled to make it palatable! I'll bet they had some fun with Gemini Man... :-) > >Sliders may be crud, but there are far worse shows that never get > >seen...Galloping Galaxies, Galactica 1980, Quark, Salvage-1, Space: Above > >And Beyond, Earth 2 etc :) Galloping Galaxies was, if I recall, something for kids created by Bob Block, creator of major classic children's tv series Rentaghost. I don't think it was ever intended to be shown as even quasi serious science fiction. Rentaghost - now I haven't seen that for years... Coronation Street viewers might not know that Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) was series regular Nadia Popov (I think) - a ghost who kept teleporting whenever she sneezed... they don't make shows like that any more Thinking about it, compare the robot roll call bit in the MST3K opening credits to the intro to Teletubbies - the way the names are sung is very similar.... it may be me but I couldn't help joining in as Cambot et al came up with the names of the Teletubbies... Perhaps my tablets are wearing off... - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian Dowling - Birmingham, England Online Alphan #144 techlab5@space1999.com / hellion@easynet.co.uk http://fly.to/moonbase_alpha / http://www.hellion.easynet.co.uk - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *********************************************************** Online Alpha - The Space: 1999 Mailing List To unsubscribe: send email to majordomo@buffnet.net and in the body put unsubscribe space1999 (or space1999-digest) *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 23:32:41 +0100 From: Brian Dowling <techlab5@space1999.com> Subject: Space1999: OT: Blake's 7 telemovie Hi folks, Off-topic but perhaps newsworthy... Brian Lighthill (priducer of 2 year 4 B7 eps and the 2 recent audio dramas) has confirmed that he and Paul (Avon) Darrow opwn the rights to and are in the process of putting together a new Blake's 7 tele-movie. Word is that it will be set some years after the climactic events in the final episode "Blake". Because the BBC do not own any part of this production, it is likely that they will not be involved in it at all. According to a chat transcript from chat.beeb.com, the idea of the tele movie was something Terry Nation suggested shortly before his death. Darrow will be co-producing, so there should be a nice meaty role for Avon. The difference between Dalton and the rest is that >he's a Shakespearian - and like the Doctors after Tom Baker isn't >given as much credit as he deserves. Dalton was as close to the Fleming Bond as anyone's ever been...and that may have been his downfall. He played the role with the utmost seriousness, to the point where he was positively grim at times. It was a valid move to make, considering how much of a spoofy character Moore's Bond was at times, but I believe that the audiences wanted someone with a bit of humour and zest. Brosnan provided that mixture of humour and seriousness, which never strays into either extreme. The fact that he's a god looks-wise, and is just BORN for the role helps too. Lazenby was different to all of them...fallible, human, self-deprecating at times, devoid of the coldness Connery and Dalton displayed. Connery's so popular because he was the first, and he was fortunate to have so many excellent films...only Diamonds Are Forever was anything less than excellent. You Only Live Twice was a rather silly, but at least it had a cracking Roald Dahl script and the perfect Blofeld. Davison is an acclaimed Doctor...Colin Baker (my fave Doctor) was the vitim of BBC politics and, like Sylvester McCoy, wasn't given enough episodes to make a big impression. 14 a year was just not enough. >I want to know what's going to happen to Q - scenes with him in are >my favourite ones! Desmond Llewellyn is irreplacable! Well, the guy ain't dead yet, but who knows if he'll be fit enough for another Bond flick? If they can replace M successfully (and it's been done thusly twice), Q 2 could work too. Why not the female Q in Joihn gardner's series, Q'ute? OK, so the name is stupid, but other than that...:) JeffStoat *********************************************************** Online Alpha - The Space: 1999 Mailing List To unsubscribe: send email to majordomo@buffnet.net and in the body put unsubscribe space1999 (or space1999-digest) *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 23:13:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Mona Delitsky <mona@nimbus.yorku.ca> Subject: Space1999: Cool Fanzines Yo, Alphans ! It's a really entertaining book with loads of twists and turns. One of the main characters is called "Nebogipfel" and I think Baxter deserves praise for daring to name one of his main protagonists that. :) Seriously, it's a really satisfying read, and a very worthy sequel to an SF classic. *********************************************************** Online Alpha - The Space: 1999 Mailing List To unsubscribe: send email to majordomo@buffnet.net and in the body put unsubscribe space1999 (or space1999-digest) *********************************************************** ------------------------------ End of space1999-digest V3 #26 ******************************
