Hi All,

I've uploaded another clip from "UFO:1999" -- to appreciate the humor
in this the most, you need some familiarity with Space:1999, UFO, and
Austin Powers:

   http://ufo.simplenet.com/temp/remoteEagle.mov

In this clip, Commander John Koenig crashes his Eagle while trying to
figure out what's going on with the nuclear waste dumps, and then
there is some discussion about using a remote Eagle with Koenig, Dr.
Helena Russell, UFO's Colonel Alec Freeman (who acts just like Austin
Powers in this video) and Commander Ed Straker.

Enjoy!

I think the guy from Pennsylvania with the self-published book is Corey LeChat. You can check out his website at

He was also the subject of a two page article in a recent Toy Shop collector's newspaper. It was the one with the Pez cover.

No. Nick At Nite, as many cable channels, is divided into different
regions. We here in the U.S. are treated to such programs as, "The Mary
Tyler Moore Show", "The Jeffersons" and "I Love Lucy".

TV Land, a subsidiary of Nick at Nite, would currently be the obvious
choice at this time to run "Space: 1999" , but alas, nothing
yet...(Tuned in the other day and saw "The Powers of Matthew Star",
though :-))

Actually, we were as surprised and as disappointed as you were. We never
quite knew where we stood with her and couldn't announce anything because we
ourselves didn't know... :) We were hoping that Barbara would take the
stage during Friday's ceremonies and would give us an hour's QandA. But
apparently she was too busy with the play (rehearsals) and other matters.
Oh, well... it was great to see her and her reaction (I'm told) when seeing
the set for the first time was that her jaw dropped!!!

I'm wondering if people have any good sources of Space:1999 photos. I lived
in New York for about 7 years and when I first got there in 1990 the
memorobilia store "Jerry Olingers" used to have a pretty decent collection
of Space1999 stills but got rid of alot of them in recent years. When I was
out in LA for Breakaway con I hit a lot of memorobilia stores and they
didn't have much. I know there must be other film/ TV photo stores besides
what is in New York and LA. Space:1999 is one of those shows that had a
huge amount of publicity and on set photos taken so they are out there
somewhere.

Also, does anyone out there live in Baltimore or surrounding areas?

Thanks

Brian,

I ordered a number of photos from Still Things and had them as autograph
fodder for Breakaway. He sent the photos promptly and was nice to deal
with. You can go to his website and order from there. My only complaint is
that you have to go by text descriptions of the photos--there are no
thumbnails to view, so you're not quite sure what you'll get.

Johnny commented that Meta might not be a planet at all! I tend to
disagree with this, finding it hard to believe that they didn't confirm
Meta's existence by astronomical observation. I think that the signal
did NOT originate from Meta, certainly, but that does not preclude Meta
being a rogue planet.

If Meta is not a planet, earth scientist were wondering how a planet could
be drifting thru space, and the video at the con gives the impression that
the meta signal is Sandra's message then...maybe Meta is the moon. Perhaps
an event (yet to be written by Johnny) has enviromentally transformed it as
in "Last Sunset" That could be the final evolution of Alpha. (assuming that
the alphans returned to it after the slingshot orbit bought it back in
range). Hmmmm

Subject: RE: Space1999: MESSAGE FROM MOONBASE ALPHA

Hi all!

I was thinking of some stuff, as I thought it was
very clever to make Meta signal really the message
from Sandra - I guess it makes the assumption that the
Meta signal was never "de-coded" to see if it
contained a message.

Anyway, the idea of the moon becoming the Meta
planet is intriguing, but it would take away a lot
from the premise of the show.

My alternate thought is this - Meta is not
wandering thru space - perhaps it has a very odd orbit
similar to a comet and was just swinging around on its
way back to its solar system...does that make sense?
Another thing is that they never said *where* Meta was
- - just that they were launching a probe to see what it
was all about! Sooooo --- this Meta planet is in a
wide swinging orbit that brushes it somewhere near our
Solar System - we detect it and its signal - very
stangely the signal is decoded to become Sandra's
message! Very paradoxical and spooky.

Brian and other list newbies:

Did you know that Johnny Byrne is subscribed to
this list? When he has time he jumps in and discusses
various ideas and thoughts with us! Ain't that kewl?

Yeah, I think I need to go back to the Cybrary and have another look and
*digest* it properly.

Which neatly ties it all up! From the sounds of things, and if this film is
considered "canon" (as I suspect it will be, being written by Johnny Byrne),
the saga of S1999 seems to be returning to something epic in scope. Plenty,
plenty of room for different stories here. But what of Alpha? I have to
admit, I miss the idea of the wandering Moonbase being central to the
Alphans' continuing adventures. Perhaps those Alphans who plan to return to
the moon from Terra Alpha do make it, and somehow, the moon continues
wandering the universe populated by this new generation...

(Tangential thought): My God, this is the first *new* Space:1999 we've had
in over twenty years! No wonder we're all going crazy speculating about the
story possibilities.

Perhaps they could have him in the position of grand old sage/wise man... it
would fit with the mythic nature of the story. Mind you, can you imagine
Koenig getting togged up in his spacesuit and running around and crashing
eagles at the age of 80-plus? (OK, OK, I know the Terra Alpha stories would
probably have a very different quality to them, but the thought is a
laugh!)... Then again, who's to say that Koenig will be around at the end of
the 25 years on Terra Alpha?

Nick:

Me thinks you are missing something here - the
Alphans return to the Moonbase Alpha because Terra
Alpha has become a mistake! The adventures continue
from that point on -

Now, the thought occurs - how do you get the Moon
out of Terra's orbit? Hmmmm...perhaps blast Terra out
of the Universe? That is, the Alphans land on the
planet not realizing it is going to go KABOOEY! That
would make them pack up and go pretty fast.

Mateo:

As for using the original cast - impossible - no
offense to them but they are much too old to carry on
a show like this - yes they could make guest
appearances (actually, I would like them to be guest
aliens like Catherine Schell was in Guardian of Piri),
but I don't think you need them around on every
episode.

Returning to Alpha, they could come back 400 strong
- - no reason they would have to limit births on a
planet, now would they? You could also create a very
real political conflict - on Terra Alpha we could see
the beginnings of democratic representation take hold
as the autocracy of MBA would no longer apply. Now
that they are back on Alpha the newly elected
Commander becomes autocratic (ie like Koenig, not like
King George III :-) and this creates friction on the
Base.

We can never re-capture what was - but we can work
on what can be.

Anthony

The base was "gutted" (in the words of Johnny Byrne) during the exodus and
when, and if, the Terra Alphans return to the base for whatever reason, they
will have to re-build the base (read: update it for the 21st century viewer).

Most of my fiction writing relvolves around deep space exploration
and the relationships that develop there. One of my favorite stories,
called "StarMasters" revolves around the crew of a cranky, aged
starfreighter. The atmosphere is one of extreme isolation and distance
from everything these seven characters know. But, it's not overly
philosophical, just adventures that I've wanted to put on paper since I
was a child.

Space: 1999 was there for me. So were the other sci-fi shows of the
era, like Battlestar Galactica, which I tolerated, and of course, Star
Wars in May of 1977. But it was Space: 1999 that really kept my
attention, until it disappeared from the local airways...
Another possible blunder ahead... have any of you ever posted a
favorites list from the series? Like your three most favorite episodes
from each season? And why? I'd like to see what you all think. Someone
get it started and I'll add my thoughts.
Also, one last question: How many novelizations were released for
the second season's stories? I only have three, and have been scanning
for the others for a long time...
