So, today we begin the WxW thread with a discussion of the philosophical

5 days as this is Weir's only script for Space: 1999.

I wrote earlier about which pieces I most want to hear. Looking at the
track listing for the Y2 CDs on the Fanderson site, these are my
expectations:

Robert Farnon's piece from New Adam, New Eve (How Beautiful is Night).
- -----IS ON IT

> 1. The sad music from Space Warp when the Maya-creature is in the Eagle cockpit
- -----LOOKS PROMISING
2. The music used when Helena records her Status Report in One Moment
of Humanity discussing Tony's suspect instability
- -----LOOKS PROMISING
> 3.  The music used when Helena and Tony sit down to eat upon arriving on Vega in OMOH;
- -----LOOKS PROMISING
> 4.  The eerie choral music used during Koenig's walk on Planet D;
- -----DOUBTFUL
> 5. The declaration of love music used in The Beta Cloud
- -----LOOKS PROMISING
> 6. The Metamorph episode title theme
- -----LOOKS PROMISING
> 7. The spooky marimba theme used in ?, can't remember where, just
> remember the music;
- -----NO WAY OF KNOWING

Others have spoken about the fight scene in TBOW with Ben Vincent
defending Koenig. That piece appears to be on the CDs.

From: "THOMAS LOWERY" <t.lowery3@gte.net>
Subject: Space1999: WxW: BLACK SUN

I met as well start off by saying that this episode is NOT on my list of
favorites for many reasons. Black Sun is a fine example of character
interaction and development, achieving this with a series of thoughtful,
quiet scenes: the beginnings of Paul and Sandra's relationship (which,
outside of two episodes, was never fully developed); the disclosure that
Victor has a mechanical heart; Tanya alleviating her loneliness by joining
Paul, who apparently spends some of his time playing guitar, and other
elements that create a level of interest and concern in the viewer for the
characters. I also love the concept of SciFi spirituality, what STARLOG
dubbed the Mysterious Unknown Force.

However, it is often the case that, in the weak episodes of 1999, viewers of
a more casual nature where not able to pick up on what the writer was trying
to say, especially when the answers do not come easily (people are generally
lazy thinkers and need answers to all the questions at the end of episodes -
like they usually do in programs like Poirot or Columbo). But even to a
great admirer of 1999 like myself, there are certain things that do not make
any sense.

One: IF the MUF was protecting the Alphans, why did it allow Mike Ryan to
die?
Two: IF the Bergman force field protected the base, then why was there no
damage to the moon itself?
Three: Why does this MUF live inside the Black Sun? Or, is the Black Sun
THE MUF?
Four: If this force is the same one that guides MBA on its odyssey, then
why is it so evasive?
Five: Why do Koenig and Bergman age?
Six: David Weir, along with everyone else connected with 1999, obviously
never bothered to check his scientific accuracy count! Black Sun? Sound in
a vaccum?

These are only some of the questions this episode leaves unanswered. Both
Chris Penfold (who was involved with 1999 during its earliest days and,
along with Gerry Anderson, can be credited with a considerable amount of
what we saw in the manner of style, pitch and tone) and Johnny Byrne (1999's
most poetic writer) have stated there was NO story arc for 1999 - they just
did things as they went along. This being the case, there is no reason to
think that this being is the MUF guiding the Alphans during Year One of
1999.

As John Muir says in his book, "Exploring Space:1999", a mystery is a
wonderful thing, but there needs to be a chain of clues in order to give the
viewer SOME way of solving the mystery. FORCE OF LIFE is a fine example of
leaving "some" clues, and placing the job of using the clues to come to a
logical answer YOURSELF. But Black Sun does not meet this criteria enough
to be considered one of the best episodes of 1999.

I am aware that both fans and cast members alike (Landau, Bain, Merton and
Morse all have said they liked Black Sun - but mostly for its character
moments) enjoy this episode. But this one more than any other gave the
series a bad rep during its original run.

Using a scale of 1-10, my score: 5

Tom Lowery

Hi All,

'Black Sun' is my all-time favorite Space:1999 ep.
The best they did !! It has great spiritual moments
that do not ever get maudlin, and since humans don't
really know what would happen inside a black hole, I
think the events that occur to Bergman and Koenig
are reasonable, as well as mystical. When they are
inside and the being speaks to them, it is reminicent
of that Star Trek episode where time slows down for
Kirk so he can communicate with beings that live at
vastly different speeds from us. Time has slowed down
to a crawl for Koenig and Bergman and that's why they
can communicate with the being inside the Black Sun
for a short time. There is alot of general accuracy
in the events that take place; at least time dilation
is present for K and B.

I like the guitar bit with Paul, and Tanya asking,
Garbo-like, if she can share the music with him. Also,
the guys playing poker for high stakes is pretty funny.

Subject: Space1999: "Albinoni's Adagio"

With all the Y2 CD talk this little tidbit crossed the old inbox. I
subscribe to the Renaissance email list, Renaissance was a Progressive Rock
band in the 1970's with such great hits as Carpet of the Sun, Ashes are
Burning and Northern Lights. They also covered Albinoni's Adagio in a song
titled Cold is Being.
A pretty depressing song actually.

Well Albinoni's Adagio has been covered again, here is the article from the
Renaissance email list.

   Date: 17 Jan 2000 16:03:20 -0000

Subject: Adagio

Lara Fabian, a belgian singer living in Canada,
has recently released an album "Lara Fabian" and
a single "Adagio". Both are doing very well in
the charts. In France, the album has reached the
number 1 position while the single made the top 5:
http://www.ifop.fr/ifop/actualit/topalb/topalb.htm
http://www.ifop.fr/ifop/actualit/top50/top50.htm.
It happens that "Adagio" is a sung version of
"Albinoni's Adagio". It's just a shame that nearly
no one, among those who buy these records, has
never heard of Renaissance and "Cold Is Being".
