A stuntman, stunt coordinator and stunt double who worked on The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955-59), The Avengers (1964, 1967-9), Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969), Danger Man (1965), Blakes 7 (1979), The Saint (1966 and 1968), The Persuaders! (1971), and The Prisoner (1968; he also created the idea for the episode Living In Harmony). He co-wrote, as Frank J. Maher, three action novels with Denis J. Cleary, and wrote (uncredited) action sequences for Die Hard (1988).

He was nominated for several awards for his leading role in Deadwood (2005) and won a Golden Globe. He has done a number of voice roles in Shrek the Third (2007) and The Golden Compass (2007)
