CANADA

CBC is the national public broadcaster in Canada; it carries advertising as well as being publicly funded. There are actually two parallel networks- the CBC English service, and Radio-Canada in French. It is actually formed of a number of stations, the major cities being fully owned by CBC, with smaller cities having private affiliates who mostly carry CBC network programming but occasionally pre-empt for local programmes.

CBC: English

Space: 1999 was premiered in 1975 but only regionally. When the renewal was announced, Year 2 was promptly scheduled to run full-network, on Saturdays from September 1976. After the cancellation, CBC continued to show reruns into late 1978. The series was re-run regionally on CBC in the mid-1980s and was shown again on the cable channel YTV in the early 1990s. The compilation movies surface occasionally on Space the Imagination Station. (Thanks to Jason Henley)

Radio-Canada: French

Year One episodes dubbed in French were shown on various regional CBC stations in different slots.

CBLFT (French CBC in Toronto) premiered the show at about 5pm on Monday, September 1st, 1975 by showing "Breakaway". The following week was Death's Other Dominion. Being a main network presentation, the CBLFT prints were pristine -- probably from 2" Quad, whereas the regional showings in English would have been off live 16mm telecine chains. For the second season of Space, the main CBC English service picked up the series. (Thanks to Simon St. Laurent)

After the initial full run of Year One and Year Two, repeats of episodes from both series were randomly mixed. Most of the US merchandising seems to have been available.

The voice dubbing was done by Studios Cinelume in Montreal. The following actors dubbed the regulars:

Other actors included Paul Hébert, Louise Deschatelets, Léo Ilial, Serge Turgeon, Jacques Galipeau, and Louise Turcot.

Odd changes include Dick Russell for Lee Russell in Matter Of Life & Death, Marra for Arra in Collision Course, and Aigle Noir (Black Eagle) for Eagle 1. Daniel Courville explains the phonetic reasons for these changes: Lee pronounced in English sounds like the word for "bed" (lit). Aigle Un is a bit lacking in consonants: Aigle Noir adds a soft consonant and has the same number of syllables as Eagle One.
