2001 broke away from the smooth aerodynamic rocketships seen in science fiction. The complex shapes were influenced by real spacecraft and satellites. Space 1999 emulated the more realistic designs that have since become standard for science fiction. |  |

The Moonbus seen is 2001 has clear similarities with Space 1999's lunar shuttle, the Eagle. Both craft feature sturdy landing legs, and the front windows are inset (like NASA's Gemini spaceship).
The shot of the pilots seen in the Moonbus windows was reproduced in Space 1999's first episode, as was the shot of the ship landing, seen through a window. |

Like 2001, Space 1999 used models with spring legs (filmed in slow motion to simulate weight). Freon gas canisters in the models kicked up lunar dust like real retro rockets.
The landing pads then descended into underground hangars. |
