This episode was more a horror story than science fiction, and the directors of Space: 1999 had cut their teeth doing horror movies. As a result, this episode has a dark, gothic feel that makes the story work well. Ian McShane gives the character of Anton Zoref a frightened innocence that you can tell that although he’s on a killing spree through the base, he is just as much a victim in this celestial nightmare. This episode reinforces that the Alphans are helpless as they drift through space, unlike on Star Trek, where you know if you take a left at the next star, you’ll get to Earth. |
