“Space Brain” |

Alpha is swallowed by a “space brain” whose antibodies threaten to crush the base. Writer: Christopher Penfold Director: Charles Crichton Guest Cast Shane Rimmer as Kelly Carla Romanelli as Melita |
I once learned — the hard way — that dishwashing liquid should never be used in a dishwashing machine. The result is a kitchen literally filled with suds, kind of like Main Mission in this episode. The problem is the damned things looked silly. Popular urban legend among Space: 1999 fandom holds that someone on the crew got hold of a foam making machine, and they figured, “Hey, let’s write an episode where we get to use it!” Otherwise, it’s an interesting concept, and in many ways a reworking of “Ring Around The Moon” except that in that episode the Tritons were malevolent, where the Space Brain is trying to save not only its own life, but that of the Alphans as well. The music was well-paced too, using Gustav Holst’s “Mars, Bringer of War” to underscore the antibody attack on the base as it passes through the brain. I could really like this episode; I just wish I could get over those damned soap suds.... |
