Some of the greatest stories in science fiction have been based on premises beginning with “what if...” This episode, unfortunately, is based upon the premise “What if Gwent from ‘The Infernal Machine’ had been played by Jerry Lewis?” The result doesn’t work. A silly robot that looks like a gadgeted washing machine, equipped with a high-pitched voice and given to saying “woo-hoo” a lot. But Brian turns out to have a dark side, and so he imprisons John and Helena and makes them do his bidding, that is, to make him immortal. It’s an hour of silliness that was unbecoming of Space: 1999. |
