The closest I have come to seeing a Year Two episode during this millennium was when I rented the movie Destination: Moonbase Alpha, which was basically this episode edited together into a movie length. In its original form, it was Space: 1999’s only two-part episode.

We get lots of back story on many characters here, though little if any of it meshes with continuity: we meet Tony’s brother Guido Verdeschi; Sandra’s fiancé Peter (I wonder if Paul knew about him?); Helena’s instructor from medical school, Dr. Shaw; and an old childhood sweetheart of Koenig’s, Diana Morris, whom Helena despises. There’s a nice little verbal catfight between them. But little of this back-story meshes with what has gone on so far.

Of course, they’re not really old friends and relatives from earth, but ugly, evil aliens who want to destroy the Alphans. And once again, as in “Guardian of Piri” and “Collision Course,” Koenig is the only person who knows what’s really going on, but nobody will believe him. Only Koenig sees the aliens as the disgusting blobs of protoplasm that they are. Nobody believes him, and he keeps getting stunned and confined to the medical unit.

One of the problems I had with this episode, however, was the aliens themselves. They’re ridiculous blobs of protoplasm that look like escapees from a Sid and Marty Kroft production. They totally don’t mesh with the illusions they’re creating. (Think about it, Sandra — you kissed one! If that’s not good for one of those trademark screams, what is?)
