The Alphans are exploring a beautiful planet just perfect for settling, except for two problems: the environment is turning against them rapidly, and a mysterious alien drives those who look at it insane on sight. Even the title of this episode is lifted out of Star Trek. It’s largely a filler episode, a light little romp on a deadly planet, a couple of Alphans get driven insane, then they learn to communicate with the alien, which says it’s sorry and stops killing people. “Just when we find a planet we can live on,” Helena muses vacuously at the end, “we can’t stay.” In the books, they did: Michael Butterworth knew this was the end for Space: 1999, and placed this episode last at the end of the novelization series. |
