On a planet where plants are the ruling class, John and Maya are convicted of murder when they pick a flower and eat a berry. Writer: Charles Woodgrove Director: Val Guest Guest Cast David Jackson as Alien Strong Roy Marsden as Alien Transport |
Remember that scene in The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy picks an apple, and the tree grabs it back from her and yells at her? Basically, this is the same story. But while it was cute in The Wizard of Oz, in this episode, it was silly. The trees just yell at Dorothy; they make Koenig and Maya stand trial by ordeal in a fight to the death with three scarrry looking aliens. Who writes this stuff? Oh, that’s right. “Chuck” did. While credited to “Charles Woodgrove” this episode was actually written by producer Fred Freiberger under a pen name. It’s a remake of the “Arena” episode of Star Trek oddly amalgamated with the “Great Vegetable Rebellion” from Lost in Space, all set on a planet named after a small airport town on the way from London. One high spot in this episode is that we get a little back story on Koenig and Maya when they share life stories. (Koenig doesn’t seem to remember Victor at all, though he reminisces about a wife who died in the War of 1987.) It’s an elementary concept poorly executed, and they should have taken away “Chuck’s” typewriter. Alas, he went on to write two more episodes: “The Beta Cloud” and “Space Warp.” |
