Catherine Schell actually played two roles on Space: 1999. First, she was a guest star in the first season episode “Guardian of Piri” as the android seductress who serves the Guardian. For the second season, she was hired full-time to play Maya, a “resident alien” brought in by Fred Freiberger as part of his plan to “dumb down” the show to suit American audiences. She could change into any living creature at will and perform mental mathematics at staggering speed. The character was ill conceived and poorly written, but Ms. Schell saved it with her admirable acting skills.
Catherine no longer utilizes these skills, unfortunately. She has retired from acting and now runs a small bed and breakfast in France. But she was kind enough to come out of retirement for a weekend to mingle with those who had been her biggest fans.
