The idea came up on the Space:1999 listserv that perhaps Year 1 and Year 2 were so completely different as to be separate parallel universes. In this manner, Command Center had always been the control section of Moonbase Alpha in the Y2 universe, likewise Main Mission was and always had been the control section for the Y1 universe. This could also explain the different crew, clothing and attitudes portrayed.
One of the biggest differences between the two universes was the attitudes of Commander Koenig and Dr. Russell. In Y1 they appear to be two people who have just met (at Koenig's appointment to Alpha days before Breakaway) are attracted to each other, but don't have the time in their hectic schedules to do more than note the attraction exists. During Y1 episodes, this attraction appears to grow stronger, until they appear to have acknowledged their attraction to each other by the time "Testament of Arkadia" occurs.
Their attitude in Y2 is much more intimate, playful, and informal, as if they have known each other longer than they have known the burdens of command that each has. The absence of Victor Bergman is neither mentioned or mourned by either of them, as if his death occurred long before the other problems they have encountered on Alpha.
I wrote a story last year called "Those Who Help Themselves" which highlighted these differences. Then, realizing it was 1999 and they had to meet and fall in love some time after Tony Cellini returned aboard the Ultra Probe in 1998, I wrote Valentine's Day, with a more adult nature than my usual fare. Maureen J. Long was then inspired to write several stories to explain their blossoming relationship and encouraged me to write their meeting in "You're the one..."
This alternate universe is playful, tongue-in-cheek, and never, ever meant to be taken seriously. Please keep in mind that these stories include adult themes. -- Maureen J. Long
