In the US, A&E Home Video is releasing
"Space: 1999" on VHS (NTSC) and DVD (NTSC, Region 1 encoding), re-mastered
from 35mm prints. On November 12, 2001, Carlton Video released the third and final wave of a separate
UK release (PAL, Region 2 encoding), see our coverage here.
On January 30, 2001, A&E Home Video launched the first wave of "Space: 1999"
releases. This was followed by a second wave on July 31, 2001, a third wave on February
26, 2002 and a forth wave on June 25, 2002. On September 24, 2002, A&E Home Video
will complete their release of "Space: 1999" with their release of a "Space:
1999 Mega Set".
Each wave consisted of 2 box sets, encompassing 12 episodes ( 6 per set) DVD and
6 episodes (3 per set) VHS. A box set consists of 3 VHS tapes with 1 episode per
tape priced at $29.95 (MSRP)or 2 DVDs with 3 episodes per disc priced at $39.95 (MSRP).
The Mega Set consists of all 48 episodes, plus bonus features on 16 DVDs priced at
$199.95 (MSRP).
The third wave and forth waves only consist of DVDs. I've questioned A&E Home
Video as to whether the VHS releases have been discontinued, but the only answer
I was able to get from them was a stock response directing me to purchase the DVDs
from their web site.
A&E Home Video is also considering the release of the "Fanderson/Kindred
Productions" "Space: 1999 Documentary" and has also shown a slight
interest in the re-mastered episodes that were shown at MainMission:2000.
Currently a write-in
campaign is underway to convince
A&E Home Video to release the 7 minute short, "Message from Moonbase Alpha"
as part of the Mega Set release. Please join the effort.
