THE FUTURE THAT NEVER WAS
Some people often write to me asking about the purpose of my site. Well.... the purpose of my site is simply to inspire anybody who would have doubts about pursuing one of their dreams. Don't let people around you tell you that something is too crazy. Follow your passions !
My passion for modern design furniture goes back to my childhood when I first went to EXPO 1967 WORLD FAIR during Summer and Fall of 1967. How beautiful the future would look according to that exposition. The France Pavilion (now transformed in "The Montreal Casino") was pure candy to the eye. In there you could see the newest furniture design with a lot of Oliver Mourgue (Red Djiin chair in 2001: A Space Odyssey) and the fabulous chairs of Pierre Paulin like the Ribbon chair as seen in Space: 1999. All those pure and bold forms, beautiful and intriguing shapes were totally new at the time, but somehow, I felt totally at home surrounded by them. It didn't take more for me to be under the spell of the absolute beauty of foam, molded plastic and modular furniture ! Of course at that young age I could only dream about living surrounded with such beautiful objects. A world of plastic and fiberglass..... this had to be the perfect world ! I could relate to this furniture so much, it was like I've just founded my true identity ! I was ready for the future and ....... I waited.......
Then, two years later came man first landing on the Moon. How exciting it was to watch the future happening on TV in front of our eyes. How lovely it would have been to live on the Moon....I thought. So I watch the different missions to the Moon one by one and ........ I waited.....
Years later, on that day of August 1975, the day I first saw the ad on TV for
Space: 1999 on my local TV station, I was blown away just like the Moon in
the series ! I couldn't believe my eyes ! A world beyond belief ! THIS WAS THE PERFECT
WORLD ! The world I've waited for all my life. Never before and never
after, a TV show had such an impact on me. Never before and never after I saw such beautiful design on
a TV series. To me, Space: 1999 is the quintessence of TV and design. To
me, Space: 1999 is the incarnation of absolute perfection in any way.
A MASTERPIECE..... simple as that ! :-) They could NEVER remake
a show like this. They could not recreate that unique space age mood.
My God, would have I loved to live on Moonbase Alpha among all that
gorgeous furniture, illuminated wall panels, computers, monitors and germ free
environment ! I'd never thought that someday thanks to the internet and the 70s
revival during the 90s, it would be possible to have that wonderful furniture in
my own home !
Hopefully someday my entire house will look like Alpha or close. My house needs
a make over in order to change those room divisions into big open spaces. Of
course the hard wood floors have to go ! All the wood has to go anyway ! The
only place I can stand wood is on trees ! I just love synthetic ! I love
technology, futuristic environments as we imagined them at the end of the 60s
and at the beginning of the 70s..... and I love uniformity in design not all
that "mix and match" that we see so much these days !
I LOVE MOLDED PLASTIC !!!!
We now live in the future but sometimes it looks more like the beginning of the
century !
I miss that golden age that were the 60s and 70s ! And as today's
science-fiction is concerned, I'm afraid I have some reserve ! I'd rather watch old shows ad vitam aeternam
than watch any of these new shows. And I do try to watch them, but it's useless.
The mood of those shows is so depressing and what about their look !!!!!
What are the designers on those shows thinking ? Very often, a trip to my
downtown mall is more exciting visually ! I'm very happy to have been born
in the early 60s. The future looked bright and promising back then.
DESPERATELY TRYING TO RECREATE THE
FUTURE AS WE ENVISIONED IT IN THE PAST !
LET MOLDED PLASTIC BE THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME !
To be continued .....
